Why Not ‘NEHE’?

I think HE-SHE has a better ring to it…especially since it is where SE meets NE…or how about SENE…”SENE -a place for WHITE-BELTERS to SEE and be SEEN. Make a Scene in SENE!”

I clearly need to get laid.

How about “St. Anthony”?

How do you pronounce NEHE? “Nee-hee”?

It sounds too much like the sound a donkey makes.

N-Henn (pronounced “En-Hen”)

This is now a contest. The front runner is “NeHe” (pr. Nee – Hee) for the new name of the trendy upcoming area which used to be “St. Anthony”.

All entries will be judged fairly.
.
.

Let the naming commence.

SF has second city. I’ve been calling NE Third City for years. There’s another St Anthony anyway.

SoHo is the only time that naming scheme has ever worked in the history of the world. Even SoMa sounds stupid.

You’re right, SoHo does work, as does Tribeca. I used to live in that hood (NEHE) and miss it alot. Anyway, how ’bout Riverside?

“Riverside” is for Cedar Riverside, “Third City” is too William Gibson. And enough with the other cities, this is Minneapolis we’re talking about, damnit.

Focus.

Better, better. Now we’re getting somewhere.

Well, a couple years back, I found the the Warehouse District really is the North Loop or NoLo

The whole warehouse district isn’t the North Loop.

Why don’t we just call it “Esquire Magazine: Best Bar in America” ?

Let the contest records show that Paul is cool.

But the Loop-related names aren’t gonna work because it’s too far over the river and up Henneping. This is different. Think “New Bulldawg and Lund’s + Whitey’s and the Terminal. Besides, whatever neighborhood can sport that new (amazingly bad) bar “The Loop” is in a class by itself.

I like Henneping

Would it be considered ‘Near Northeast?” If so, then perhaps NeNo.

St. AnthoNye’s?

HennNE? (pronounced ‘henny’) “Take my wife, please!”

That area is past its sell-by-date…the yuppies have already moved in & out. My question is what’s next for gentrification? I’ll take Elliot Park for $200, Alex.

I’ve lived in the neighborhood for five years now, and everyone I know who lives here calls it either “Near Northeast” or “Old Saint Anthony.” I like the latter, myself, and I (and many others) absolutely despise NeHe, partly because it isn’t accurate (it’s East Hennepin, not Northeast Hennepin – it forms the divider between NE and SE streets) but mostly because it just sounds unbelievably stupid.

Hmmm… “Old Saint Anthony”. I like it. It’s new, but has Old in the title. It also stands on its own.

We have a new front runner, but I don’t think it’s a winner quite yet.

It DOES need a name. When I lived there I would end up saying, “do you know where the Horst hair dressing school is?” Oh, somebody above mentioned Whitey’s. I got 86′d from that place several years ago and still have no idea why. I hate that.

Dude, who get’s 86-ed from WHITEY’S???

(Although I must say they have changed. They serve carpaccio now. WTF)

oops, I seem to have caught the unneccessary apostrophes.

Excuse me while I bathe my text in RID and comb out the *nit’s*

I know. And they wouldn’t tell me what I did. Maybe they had me confused with someone else. I’m like, “whatever I fuckin’ did, I’m sorry!”

I always thought St. Anthony was the area down by the river (near Tuggs Tavern)?? I never know what to call the un-artsy part of Northeast, either.

Kramarczukville?
HennCe/CenHen for where Central and Hennepin meet? ugh
Burlington cause it’s close to its RR line? Sounds like the Coat Factory.
Chute Park, sorta like a Chicago neighborhood? Sounds weird.
Porktown for the controversial new Porky’s? Porktown sounds like my heaven.

i give up.

Yeast Henny

Folks (including the strib) have been calling that area NeHe for years now. It still sounds contrived and forced to me.

I made my first visit to the Mill City Museum recently, and heard much on the history of the two cities — Minneapolis on one side of the river, the village of Saint Anthony on the other. By spliting the water power of the Mississippi with a dam (which is still there) equally, each community had an opportunity to build itself on water power. Minneapolis mills boomed (grain dust explosions), burned (several times) and built the town we have today. They are even responsible for Jason’s Station (WCCO stands for Washburn-Crosby Co. the flour power that later became General Mills).

St. A’s went bust.

Bust Town. Loserville. Call it what you will, the spectre of failure still hangs over St. Anthony Main, and failure is part of the atmosphere of the Terminal Bar (whose name is so rich in meanings).

Which, I think, is part of the charm of the neighborhood.

“Porktown” is giving “Old Saint Anthony” a run for its money. “Hey, where’s that new Bulldawg located?” “Oh, it’s right by Keegan’s and that new Lund’s in Porktown.” Could be tough to beat.

And “NeHe” is officially out of the running per Sam and per invocation by the Star Tribune while trying to sound in the know (anything used by the Star Tribune in an attempt to sound cool is an auto D.Q.).

I believe Cincinnati was the original “Porkopolis,” so even that name has been taken. Dang.

How about Surdykston? New Bibliot? Gentrificationville?

How about Wilde SurNyeKramistan? Lunds we can leave out. If we want something historical and non-commercial, how about Lourdes Parish? Almost sounds New Orleans. Maybe the trouble is the neighborhood is changing so much it’s hard to call it by anything it used to be called.

Re SoHo: St. Paul seems to make LoTo work…and speaking of pork, don’t forget Pig’s Eye.

I call the SE parts of the area St. Anthony Main, which connotes the falls and SE Main Street…but that’s pretty localized. Everything farther up river I call either East Hennepin, for those environs, or NE for the rest of it.

NeHe in a pig’s eye!

Keegan’s was hopping last night before we went to the fights downtown. I think it’s turned into some right-wingers enclave.

But The Rat wonders how many people who live in these places like the Cobalt Condominiums actually sample much of the streetlife in their own neighborhood. That’s what he’s been hearing.

Crime’s on the increase, too. The more affluent people that move in, the more it’s going to be a problem.

The bar scene creates enough aimless wandering drunks around here. Hipsters should just stay in Uptown or the Warhouse District. You just create problems.

How about:
The Former Home of Minneapolis’ Premier Gay Sex Dungeon…or XGSD.

Keegan’s was hopping last night before we went to the fights downtown. I think it’s turned into some right-wingers enclave.

Oh my, you went to the fights? Didn’t all that blood and gore repulse you? You know Rat, violence never solved anything, and patronizing professional sports only lines the pockets of the right-wing. I’m surprised at you, son.

God damn it, I already said I was a fan of boxing.

Masaspazza: the “paper tiger” of MNspeak.

There are hipsters in the warehouse district? I had no idea. I thought it was just drunk horny frat boys.

I vote “near northeast”. And I like the area, although I find the futher I wander into ne, the more great places there are.

“Rivercross” is cool.

“Oh my, you went to the fights? Didn’t all that blood and gore repulse you?”

You obviously don’t know liberals as well as you think, Maz. They’re the original streetfighters.

The Rat’s a boxing fan. He works out at the same gym as couple of the fighters. Wanted to cheer them on.

I also vote Rivercross … then the 331/artsy area can officially be the real Northeast.

“SoHo is the only time that naming scheme has ever worked in the history of the world. Even SoMa sounds stupid.” Add to that WeHo and SoBu.

I got a card from Denny Kemp salon a few years ago with the NeHe on it and I never went back to that salon again. way too forced.

I vote rivercross, but I’ll always just call it all northeast

BTW, I know what SoHo stands for in NYC, but what about London?? Where did that Soho name come from?? just curious if anyone knows

“Most authorities believe that the name derives from the old soho! hunting call (Soho! There goes the fox!, etc.) ” says Wikipedia.

Agreed that NeHe is way too contrived. And that area of Nordeast is nothing like the Lowry/Uni part of Nordeast which is nothing like the area over by the Northrup King uberplex.

Just keep the yuppies contained to their area, let them spend money like it was rotting in their pockets and the rest of us will be making the art and building the sense of community that makes Nordeast cool.

And lastly, a hell yes on the liberals liking a good fight. But I’ll take MMA over boxing any day.

It’s just a matter of time before the true gentrification works its way up University toward & beyond Lowry. We’re coming for your homes!

Just to clarify: the area down by the river on Main St which houses Tuggs, Kikugawa, and the Stone Arch Cinema is indeed called “St. Anthony Main,” but that only refers to that single street. (Because it’s Main Street in the part of town that used to be separately incorporated from Minneapolis and had he name “St. Anthony.”) The larger neighborhood, extending roughly as far north as where Central and East Hennepin come together, is what is known to many of us who live here as “Old St. Anthony.”

As a side note, some people consider Nicollet Island to be a part of this neighborhood, because the Inn is so closely connected to Main Street by the Merriam St Bridge, and because in the city’s official neighborhood desginations, it’s part of the “Nicollet Island/East Bank” neighborhood that covers the entire area we’re talking about. It’s probably that clunky civic label that has left so many unsure what to call the Surdyk’s/Nye’s area.

Anyway, “Lourdes” is now winning. It’s got that faux regal sound that really kinda fits in with Keegan’s, pricey Pizza Nea, luxurious Lund’s, etc.

Don’t like the place, judge?

Yeah, Lund’s: That defines luxury.

Sir DYKES & Leather Daddy Land is on the leader board.

Nyesiczstan?

Condopolis?

The neighborhood that assholes from the burbs move to, then recoil in terror at the black people, and bitch about the lack of free parking?

Land of Five Dollar Beers?

Faux Nordeast?

A New Poland for the Middle Aged?

Judge:

How long are your parents letting you stay on the computer these days?

Anyone else think the new lunds sucks?

Nyesakstan is actually pretty good.

Surdykstan, too.

Okay. The submissions have been heard. After reviewing the comments in this thread, most of which were just horrible, here is the verdict…

The small area north of the river along First and Hennepin Avenues that encompasses the new Bull Dog and Lunds and includes the already well know Nye’s, Surdyks, Keegans, Chipotle, and all that other shit that’s over there shall be split into a northern region to be known as ‘Surdykstan’ and a southern region to be known as ‘Nyesakstan’.

Let us hope that these two factions of a great Minneapolis neighborhood can exist side-by-side in peace and prosperity.

“SoHo is the only time that naming scheme has ever worked in the history of the world. Even SoMa sounds stupid.”

Living about halfway up Central in Northeast, I made a point to always and forever refer to Columbia Heights as CoHei. I had some modest success trying to nudge that into the popular lexicon.

I loathe the “Northeast Minneapolis” banners that went up along East Hennepin as the neighborhood started to pick up. Nordeast starts properly at the train tracks south of Broadway and not an inch before.

I’ve always just called that area “East Hennepin,” regardless of whether a particular destination is actually on Hennepin or not.

St. Louis Park is St. Louis Park. Edina is Edina.

Maybe we ought to call it Minneapolis.

I live here and have for 20 years. The neighborhood doesn’t need a nickname, it already has one: Old St. Anthony. A lot of people just call it St. Anthony Main, too, I guess since thats more or less the center of the neighborhood.

Isn’t the Aveda HQ still located on Central @ University? Why not call the area “Juust Us”?

hey, a thread about my hood!

I’ve actually been wondering what to call it for a while, and the best I’ve come up with is “old st anthony” and “near nordeast,” both of which I saw mentioned here. I’m not a fan of the condo-dwelling yuppie asshats either, but them’s the breaks of living here.

What have they ever done to you?

They’re not friendly and they think all the crime in the neighbourhood (what crime!?) is caused by the renters in the area and not people coming in from afar.

Also because the Lunds offers some kind of market botique shopping experience instead of groceries.

Old St. Anthony

Ne-He is stupid.

In honor of the forementioned gay sex dungeon, I submit “Tranny-sylvania.”

A few years ago, the City Pages called it the gayborhood. Has the closing of Boom and Bobino left that name a relic?

there’s more yuppie couples and old farts moving back into condos in the city than gay people these days. Ground Zero is still there for all your fetish fun, but even it seems less gay than when I first moved here.

Hows about NoMi

North of the Mississippi

People from NE call it “Lower NE”
Simple. Enjoy it before it gets all screwed and you can’t get a parking spot or bar stool.

“Lunds offers some kind of market botique (sp) shopping experience instead of groceries.”

Lotta edible stuff in there, but if you don’t like it, go to Rainbow. It’s not far.

They’re not friendly

You’re not exactly coming off as a Good Time Charlie yourself, tmay

they made me surly. I’m normally quite friendly. Well, sort of friendly.

Lotta edible stuff in there, but if you don’t like it, go to Rainbow. It’s not far.

Some people don’t drive and don’t like to wait 30 minutes in the cold for a bus with a load of groceries.

So, what is not in the new Lund’s that you want?

Hookers, blow & small batch Tequilas.

Damn yuppies aren’t going to let them sell that.

Although a hooker or two might cruise through occasionally.

They drink orange juice, too.

what grote said

mostly lower-priced brands and variety. if you’re not looking for 12 varieties of canned oysters, you’d better be happy with a limited selection that starts at the mid-to-high price range.

Mostly, I like it. It’s bright and clean. You wanna buy your food in a place like that.

“Kick that gay-ass orange juice to the curb and step up to flavor with whale cancer!!!”

I forget exactly where the demarcation is, but some of that stuff is technically southeast Minneapolis (according to the streets/post office, anyway). I guess that’s a leftover from when Old St. Anthony was St. Anthony…

OSA? Kind of has a “SoHo” ring to it…

http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/about/maps/neighborhoods.asp

You can zoom in and get the city’s “neighborhood name”. This area has several meeting in this spot. Some names are used, some neighborhoods are joined into one larger (see Longfellow) and some never get used in eveyday life. But ask anyone in the areas north of the riverfront and most of the old regulars will say “Lower NE”. But what do they know. It still gets me when city hall types call it the east side, but they have done so for many years.

“East side” refers to it being East of the River.

Yup I knew that , it just sounds odd with it being more northeast than due east. R.T. as in hizzoner?

Northeast ini the vacinity of the old Grain Belt Brewry is a super-funky locale with ancient frame houses from the bygone days of brewry workers and other lug and lift trades jobs in the area. Except for Mayslacks famed lunch I can’t get excited about the area.

You talkin’ to me?

driving behind a mill city electrician truck today, i thought, why doesn’t st. anthony call itself “mill city”? that sounds sorta trendy — and distinguishes itself from the real northeast — and clears up confusion w/ st. anthony main.
