James Brown, RIP

45 Reader Comments

We were listening to Danny Sigelman DJ on the Current driving to grandma’s house. He said James Brown’s death “really put an exclamation mark on Christmas” – I liked that.

Hearing the news, I didn’t feel good, as I knew that I would.

Papa’s Got a Brand New Body Bag.

I can just see him popping out of the coffin when his handlers come with the cape.

“Disco is James Brown, hip-hop is James Brown, rap is James Brown. You know what I’m saying? You hear all the rappers, 90 per cent of their music is me,”

Haaaaaaaaayyyyyy Too Hot in the Hot Tub.

This article is the best tribute I can think of:

“Jump back, gonna kiss myself. One time!”

I hate to admit that the one and only time I saw James Brown was in 1987 on spring break at Daytona Beach. The Beastie Boys warmed up for him. Mr. Brown was the perfect soundtrack to the debauchery that was present at the time.

I saw him at Mystic Lake about a decade ago. But it was nothing compared to his performance in Ski Party.

He packed a whole lotta livin’ in those 73 years……he makes guys like Kanye West, Snoop Dogg, Fiddy Cent, etc…. look like a bunch of loafers.

I never cared much for James Brown. He was a semi-regular on Dick Clark’s teen show in the mid-60’s (Where The Action Is) and he just reminded me too much of the characters I had to go to school with in the ghetto … many of whom could do a James Brown impersonation better than he could. I had Motown in the lunchroom everyday. I was more interested in the British bands at the time (The Byrds, Eric Burdon and the Animals, the Stones, et al). I played and sang in a Byrds cover band back in the 70s. It was probably hearing “Turn, Turn, Turn” and “I’ll Feel A Whole Lot Better” 10 thousand times emanating from my basement that turned my kid into the rock n’ roller he is today. (Triangle)

Nevertheless, RIP James.

Maz…it’s one thing to disparage liberals, but you just dissed the Godfather of Soul while his corpse was still warm…have you no shame?

Also, the Byrds are Californian & not British. Please stick to politics.

In the immortal words of the Byrds’ Roger McGuinn, “I’ll feel a whole lot better when you’re gone”.

It probably chafes your ass that James Brown was a big Nixon supporter. heh.

James Brown didn’t impress me either, but he was before my time.

See? Even in music critiques, its only conservatives, who are not bound by political correctness, who can tell the truth.

Why’d you have to get him started?

In other new, Gerald Ford just died.

Hey Dennis! aka Mazaspazza

How’s the casino business? Still profiting from other people’s misery?

Yep! That makes YOU a TRUE CONSERVATIVE!

heh

And for the record, being a pontificating jackass and having zero respect for the dead has nothing to do with being politically correct. It just illustrates (once again) you are a fucking yammering asshole.

And kwatt, James wasn’t impressed with your weak-ass faux Tucker Carlson routine either – and neither am I.

Gerald Ford never impressed me.

What the hell is wrong with you people? James Brown dies, and you have to turn it in to a political pissing match?

No wonder no one except the “regulars” ever bothers to post here. This place is about as welcoming as your average “legitmate businessman’s club”.

Agreed…now go make me a drink.

was he even from minnesota?

How’s the casino business? Still profiting from other people’s misery?

Indian Gaming is a legal tax on the mathematically challenged wasichu, leavied for your ancestors’ sins, raindog. And maybe Ill come over there and buy your building and raise your rent for the fun of it. heh

It is disgusting. Notice how conversations were mellower and more interesting a week ago? What has changed?

Yeah, if you read through this thread it’s amazing how far it veered from the posted subject and folks generally turned it into stories about themselves and/or political “commentary.” What is this, the Festival of Idiots? I’m all for being irreverent, but that’s about all this is.

Luckily there’s plenty of other places to go for actual insight – don’t bother looking here.

As soon as Mazasapa or Raindog show up, people take their bait, then the conversation goes to hell. It’s inevitable, and the problem with an unmoderated forum. If this place had an editor, obvious trolling comments would just be deleted. We tried having an editor once though, and people didn’t seem to like that either. So, take the troll bait, or don’t. The quality of discourse is up to you all.

I tend to ignore the smelly haters in the room.
MNspeak really needs an “Ignore User” feature.

I just reacted to the hateful crap…as per usual. I don’t go looking for fights. I’m not here to bait anybody. But to just lay down and take it?! These right wing nut jobs have talk radio, the mainstream media, millions of blogs, every suburban church, etc. etc. to spew and listen to their dogma…where will it end?

I will admit sometimes my Irish temper gets the best of me and for that I apologize.

In all fairness, Maz’s first comment was entirely reasonable, if disliking James Brown can be considered reasonable. Of course, the moment grote brought up polirics, he slipped off the deep end, but you have to credit a guy for trying.

You saying you never poked the neighbor’s dog with a stick?

Disliking James Brown can’t be considered reasonable. I don’t trust people that don’t like James Brown and frankly would rather not be around them.

I’ve thrown firecrackers at him — does that count?

It cracks me up how some folks can dismiss “The Godfather.” Most of their heroes (Stones, Animals, Beatles) either straight up admittedly stole his shit (check Mick Jagger’s dance moves) or were highly influenced by it. R.I.P. James, the original Big Poppa.

What sort of sick fucks are you?
Probably the kind that would push a 18-23 yo white male college student that lives within 100 miles of Hwy 94 into a river.

One thing’s for sure though. Out of all the bands/people that stole James Brown’s shit, the Byrds aren’t one of ‘em.

That’s why I intentionally left them off my list. But I bet the Byrds and James could both tear into some drugs like hall-of-famers back in their day.

Let’s face facts. All of us have nearly stumbled into the river and drowned after a night of drinking when were were buff lads between 18-23.

Alone.

Without any witnesses.

It’s a rite of passage.

Or…

Easilly explained accidental death.

Take your pick.

Nothing to see here. Move along sheeple.

I don’t actually tease puppies. They are so cute.

beddubau you nailed it, I bet that’s one thing they may have had in common.

It’s amusing to see all these rural-white-folk-soul-brother-wannabees. I hope you realize that your black “friends” laugh at behind your back.

My white friends do too.
