At last reports, Democratic Senator Tim Johnson, a Democrat, was undergoing brain surgery after suffering stroke-like symptoms Wednesday morning. Doctors say they have ruled out both stroke and heart attack. If Sen. Johnson is unable to fulfill his duties, South Dakota’s Republican governor, Mike Rounds, would name his replacement, possibly tipping control of the Senate back to the GOP.

I wish him the best, but, if the worst happens, I pray for a Weekend at Bernies scenario, where his body is dragged around the Senate in a wheelbarrow, with pages lifting his arms and waving them to simulate life.

No doubt Karl Rove had a hand in this.
Yeehaw! We’re going to invade Iran!
2:58 am
Raindog, you’re a psycho. We’re not invading Iran.
This thing reminds me of Wellstone. Hope he pulls through.

Driving to work this morning, I had this crazy day dream where Governor Rounds listened to his people instead of his party and did indeed name a democratic senator to replace the outgoing democratic senator, doing so in a televised speech in which he basically said, “I’d be a total a-wad if I found political gain because a fellow politician had a stroke.”
If he actually did that, we’d seem him as being humane, just, and unclouded by partisan deadlock.
Man that’s a crazy day dream…
9:26 am
Listening to his people could also be selecting a Senator that shares the values and principles of Mike Rounds, who was also elected by the people of South Dakota to make such decisions, although I am sure he would rather not have to.
9:39 am
Well, Johnson was elected by the people of SD, right? Should Rounds ignore that? It would be like the Supreme Court overturning the vote in a popular election … oh, wait. Nevermind.
Daschle – Back to the Senate!!

It looks like he’s got an arteriovenous malformation in his brain. For you Six Feet Under watchers, that’s the same thing Nate had.

On the news last night, good old Hy Berman talked about this. He said that the SD Gov could only appoint a replacement if Johnson died or resigned. And there’s not way he’d resign if it meant possibly tipping control to the Republicans. So he can rest for the duration of his term and never show up on the hill and things are fine. I believe 50-49 is still a majority.
Of course if Johnson is in bad shape and has no chance at recovery but they can keep him alive in some hospital, there might be a lot of Democrats and Republicans wondering if they were on the wrong side of that whole Terri Shiavo thing.

Mike Rounds is the guy who signed the abortion law so restrictive that the people of South Dakota rejected it on a referendum. I wouldn’t expect any magnanimous moves on his part.
10:41 am
Well done Elizabeth, I had not made the connection!
11:39 am
You’re right, kwatt.
Don’t ever look for a Republican to do the right or fair thing.
Look for them to do whatever is best for themselves or their party.
11:51 am
Sure, Raindog…like Democrats are any different. Politicians are politicians.
11:56 am
I didn’t write my original posting with the idea that somehow a Democratic governor would have walked a higher moral ground than a Republican, although I’m not sure why I’m not forthright enough to say that my soul wants to believe that.
But party affiliation aside, I just would be so relieved and happy to not picture a room full of Republican wonks somehow raising a glass of bubbly because a Dem had a stroke. It’s a repulsive state of affairs when that’s a reasonable made-for-t.v. scenario.
Anyone read “Animal Farm” lately?

I’m getting the impression that the mainstream media, both locally and nationally, are actually waving their GOP pom-poms over this since they wanted to see the Dems loose control the senate by this guy in the ER unit.
Talk about “compassion consertative!” Right?
12:12 pm
SHIT BE EXPLODIN IN HIS BRAIN!
12:34 pm
I highly doubt they are waving pom-poms because of what something could mean for the GOP. I think they get really wet in the pants when ever something wild happens, and clearly a man’s health is of secondary concern when there’s a frenzy to be had.
Then again…we do have Jim Jeffords who was elected as a Republican and promptly said, wup I’m actually a Democrat, which also tipped the Senate majority. Talk about doing a roundabout on your constituents. Pun…intended.
1:07 pm
I’m pretty sure they brought in some Scanners for this and they, like, totally blowed up his brain.
It’s hard to get real wound up in conspiracy theories. You take a whole bunch of (primarily) old guys and you have to expect that a few of them are going to get real sick.
Strom Thurmann spent the past ten years in foggy dementia which didn’t stop him from staying on.
Here’s hoping for a speedy recovery.

How naive do you think we are?
They could give 2 shits over someone’s life. Look at Iraq for Chrissakes!
Norm Coleman reportedly SMIRKED when he was told of Wellstones’s death.
These blood thirsty jackels crave one thing: POWER. And the they stop at nothing and stoop to any level to get it.

Of course you realize there are two lies in that statement. After a year (not promptly) of trying in vain to have a moderate republican voice heard by Bush, Jeffords became an independent, not a democrat.
Word in South Dakota is there are no credible republicans of stature enough for a senate seat. They couldn’t even put up a strong candidate against Stephanie Herseth.
2:35 pm
This is another situation when I sometimes think that we could have world peace if we abolished organized religion and we could have reasonable government if we abolished political parties. All politicians would be independent and would utilize such novel concepts as critical thinking, scientific research, history, intuition, and sound reason.
Barring that, at least our “religious” politicians could start using the New Testament instead of all that really freaky stuff in the Old Testament.
Before I get flamed for muddying the waters with religion, I’m just making the small leap that maybe, just maybe people of South Dakota’s political and religious views might play a role in whatever difficult decisions need to be made in the weeks ahead.
5:19 pm
Jeffords caucused with the Democrats, that’s what I meant. And you’re right, it was Bush’s fault. How silly of me.
5:33 pm
I didn’t say it was Bush’s fault, but Jeffords realization that Bush was not the uniter he claimed to be played a big part in the decsion. Call that fault if you wish.
Jeffords said: “”Looking ahead, I can see more and more instances where I’ll disagree with the president on very fundamental issues–the issues of choice, the direction of the judiciary, tax and spending decisions, missile defense, energy and the environment, and a host of other issues, large and small.”
It’s a fact that the republican party has left the middle behind in it’s rightward shift, Jeffords inlcuded.

If Tim Johnson is unable to fill out his term, can’t he pick a successor when he’s able?
When Hubert Humphrey died, Muriel served out his term. Can Johnson pick his wife, if he’s married? Does it have to be the Governor?
Maybe this dilemma could be solved with a little negotiation. That seems reasonable to me.

Uh, I think we know the outcome after Humphry died in the late 70s.
Anderson to Perpich: “Crown me as king to the U.S. Senate or else!”
9:41 am
I wasn’t living here at the time. What do you mean?
10:00 am
In Minnesota, after Sen. Walter Mondale (D) ascended to the vice presidency, Anderson resigned as governor and had his successor, Lt. Gov. Rudy Perpich, appoint him to the Senate.
By the way, theyre still calling that 1978 election the “Minnesota Massacre.” Republican Rudy Boschwitz trounced Sen. Anderson in November. Gov. Perpich lost his bid for a full term to GOP congressman Al Quie. And in the race for the other Senate seat a special election necessitated by the death of Hubert Humphrey the Democrats carved each other up in the primary and the seat went to Republican Dave Durenberger.

I cried when Nate died.
10:06 am
I cried about 100 times watching Six Feet Under.
