It’s a Gamer’s World

Gears of War trailer. Came out last week. Fuck yeah.

i stopped gaming once playstation came out … too many buttons. give me sega genesis, or that huge pong machine w/ its doorknob-like control.

Computer games are a high-tech version of twiddling your thumbs.

I mostly just play PC games these days
I’m tempted to get the wii, but I’d have to buy a tv too because my monitor doesn’t have component inputs

I do like my DS lite, though!

I have considered buying a Wii also. It has some really cool things like a web brower with wireless connection and you can download games from any of the Nintendo systems for a small fee.

I currently have a Sega Genesis so maybe it’s time to upgrade. The Gears of War commerical freaks me out because it uses that song from Donnie Darko “Mad World.”

I have an old old PS 1. It’s embarrassing, but I’m waiting until my son is a little older to upgrade. Who knows what kind of insane virtual-reality video game system he’s going to want. I’m sure it’ll be cooler than the Intellivision of my childhood.

I spent my weekend playing this. I took a brief break to meet mother in law for the first time.

I have an X-Box, for the sole reason of playing Vice City.

max, you can play vice city on the PC, you know … and the aiming is a lot easier.

I don’t understand the appeal of the Wii in forcing the user to actually move in order to perform the desired action. I mean, that’s what I’m playing a video game for – let me sit on the couch and mash buttons! If you’re playing golf on the Wii and standing there simulating an actual golf swing aren’t you pretty much golfing anyway? You may as well just go to the actual golf course – the graphics are better.

The last thing console I bought was a Sega Saturn. I’m more of a PC fan, because the graphics and sound are usually better, and the monitor is higher resolution than a TV set. PC games can be a lot more complicated than console games, due to the complexity of a mouse + keyboard vs. a 8 button controller. I can’t imagine trying to play something like Everquest on a console.

It’s usually easier for me to controll a first – person shooter game with a mouse and keyboard rather than a console controller.

Consoles seem to always have to play catch-up to PCs in technology because computers drive the technology that’s put into consoles. This might change in the future if consoles are where the money will be.

Upgrades on PCs can be expensive. It’s not uncommon for the latest PC video card itself to be as expensive as the latest X-box or playstation, but that video card will generally be one generation ahead of the current console.

Most console video games usually will find their way onto a PC at some point but many PC games won’t find their way onto consoles.

For these reasons I won’t be buying a new console.

I have an X-box that is only used for Mario Kart and the rare Tony Hawk. For some serious lo-tech action, I just rely on the old original NES (everything from Punch-Out to Kid Icarus to Excite Bike).

Sorry, not X-box, Game Cube. I’ve got to get some coffee.

I have an atari upstairs-dig dug and circus atari make me happy

Once you start really getting into the 360s and similar accelerated consoles, it’s almost unbearable trying to “get into” an old game on a purely nostalgic console. Right now there are so many great games for 360 at the moment (Oblivion, Dead Rising, Gear of War, etc…) that’s it’s hard justify buying a Wii or PS3 right now.

PC gaming can be expensive, video cards are ridiculous. Furthermore, unless you have a large viewable, high resolution monitor and surround sound, pc gaming (for shooter games and the like) is far inferior to the console counterpart.

adam, the weather isn’t always nice enough outside to golf, you know! Plus some people maybe can’t afford it or aren’t any good at REAL golf and prefer to putz around with a game. Let’s not forget some of the other uses for the controller, like aiming in FPS games and swinging your sword(!) in zelda/etc. games.

I have a Sega Genesis and the NES. (Old school…) I stopped upgrading when I got a decent PC. I have never been much on FPS’s. I prefer much more complicated games which require more complicated controllers. I have never much liked the new controllers. I have always hated the “up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, select…start” BS. I can do that with F1? OK…

I can play Lemmings on my Amiga. Stereo sound, 32 colors, 640×200 display…IBM compatibles with their CGA graphics will never catch up!

That is unless you’re tired of playing the typical upgraded zombie/alien/war/role playing game with the same depressing dark drab “realistic” colors yet again with slightly better graphics. Which is all the Xbox systems ever seem to be good for aside from sports games.

I’m going to go for the Wii without question cos it just flat out looks fun to play… I’ve seen a bunch of youtube clips of people playing it… and it looks new and fun. I got a DS cos that was a new approach to handheld gaming… and I love it. I take it with me everywhere I go. I expect the Wii will be a similar if not better experience.

I’m sure the 360 and the PS3 will have their must-have games that I will wish the Wii had… but I think the price difference alone will ease the pain.

There are some good games coming out for Wii (Zelda particularly that is yes, your typical RPG with dark colors/themes and upgraded graphics…) But Mantenna, what I worry most about is that the Wii’s controller is going to end up being another flop just like the Glove. Which if I remember correctly, was more novel than innovative.

technology has come a long way since the glove and so has nintendo’s ability to make things like that more than gimmicky. See also: DS touch-screen games.

Zelda games typically don’t have dark colors (a la SOCOM or something) throughout as a rule – although this new one is supposed to look more “mature” cos of all of the manly babies out there too insecure to play fun games that actually look like fun games.

I’m not worried about the Wii controller being like the Power Glove. The Power Glove was a controller… just like the NES Advantage was – just like the U-Force was – just like the Power Pad was… a bad controller isn’t going to fail an entire system. Look at the first Xbox controller. That thing was a pile and they put out a better, smaller version of it and they were fine. Did the Dreamcast controller kill their system? I doubt it… but that thing totally sucks ass too.

The Wii controller looks radical… you can use the wand remote thing together with the nunchuk controller for analog stick movement… or as just a single wand controller. You can turn the remote sideways and use it as a classic controller… and they also make a classic controller for it that looks much like a PS2 or Gamecube controller. It’s going to be interesting to see how game developers use these controller options to make innovative new games that aren’t the same old regurgitated crap we’ve had for the last X amount of years.

I’m excited anyway. Sucks about GTA though… I doubt that will make it to the Wii.

I’ll be lining up for a Wii

I’m a total non-game person but man that DS Lite temps me.

I think its instructive that the average age of today’s gamer is 29. 30 is the new 21.

chel, I can recommend the DS lite wholeheartedly. It’s really got a lot to offer, especially to people who aren’t normally gamers. The fact that it’s done so well with non-gamers is probably why nintendo is forging ahead with their plans for the wii to capture the non-gamer market, because really, cute little fun games are what the’ve always been best at. Some people would rather have fun than see flashy super ultra nextgen $700 graphics, and that’s who nintendo is there for.

Gotta agree with tmay about the non-gamer marketing of nintendo. And ya know what, I love cute fun games. Remember Pokemon Snap? It’s the only 64 game (aside from Ocrania of Time & Mario Golf) that I still enjoying playing occasionally on that old console. Does anyone know if they’re releasing it for Wii?

…I meant girls are gamers too. Girls (like me) like Nintendo. It’s friendly, fun and accessible.
