I should add that he wasn’t my friend when he became a skinhead. Apparently it happened in the army. Nothing ever came of my attempt to convince him that he was losing his mind. He killed himself a few years later, maybe accidentally; maybe not.

A high-school friend of mine was once the leader of the “Northern Hammer Skinheads.” I was shoveling my parents’ driveway one day, on winter break from college, when he pulled up, made some small talk, and gave me his skinhead business card!!! I told him he was full of shit and insisted that we go see Schindler’s List — awesome intervention, i know, but I was only 19, and ill-equipped to deprogram a neo-nazi….
