I'm totally in disagreement with you on making sure that other persons are available to handle a situation, should one like you mentioned, come up. You are asking the managers of a Byerly's, Walgreen's, etc... to add extra staff that would probably not normally be needed, to stand by in case an employee refuses to perform a duty related to their job??? That should NOT be the responsibility of employers at all, in my opinion! When a person accepts a job, they accept the entire scope of the job, not just picking out here and there what they feel like doing.

You know, I don't mind that, or the cabbies, or the Christian who didn't want to drive the buses with the Lavender ad. As long as there is someone who can take over, no problem. It's when a pharmacist refuses birth control, and they are the only one on duty, and there is nobody else that can fill the prescription, that they have totally failed at their job.

It seems more of a management problem than anything else. If someone won't do something because their religion forbids it, make sure someone else is on hand to do it.

mark rosen told a story on kfan the other day - his mom was grocery shopping at supertarget. the mulsim cashier REFUSED to scan one of her food items (pork something) because the handling of it interfered with her religion. the cashier had to page the manager to come over and scan it for her.
