What’s the Big Ups About the Guthrie?

73 Reader Comments

And if anyone knows important buildings: It’s GQ. Is anyone else getting sick of the list phenomeon? Magazines print bogus lists to get PR. The towns that show up on the list crow about it: “A Twin Cities (instutition/newcomer) has claimed a spot as one of the most (important/popular/enduring/amazing) (buildings/bars/restaurants) in the world! According to (washed up/forgotten/non-nudie) magazine…”

And the towns that aren’t on the list bitch about it: “Can you believe it? A list of the most (blah blah blah) and the (who cares) isn’t on it? According to ….”

Last week I was drunk, you bastard!

I wonder what the Twin Cities’ bast-dressed building would be.

BEST-dressed.

That Egyptian Deco building downtown would be the Bast-dressed.

Yeah, really, Nye’s is ok but not really all that great. I wouldn’t even rate it the best bar in town, let alone the country. Probably not even the best in my neighbourhood, for that matter.

Most important buildings of the 21st century.

Gotta run; I’m listening to this great new band called the Replacements.

I’m with DeRusha on this one.

Gotta run; I’m listening to this great new band called Country Joe & the Fish

Oh my God, you guys totally burned whoever’s post this is!

Boo positive publicity for local institutions!!!

And, I’m 22, and I have no idea what “big ups” means. Is this some 1970s slang-term? Or just something someone from the 1970s thinks is a slang-term?

lol. That’s awesome j.

Big ups. I think that was mid-80s.

And I’m all for positive publicity for local places. As a reporter, though, I’m getting a ton of these lists in the form of press releases.

What’s the haps, bra? Why you gotta shine me on like that?

23 skiddoo.

Joe Dowling is still a Fascist, Anti-Gay Rights, Pro-War Bigot.

It’s fiiting that this culture chooses to laud and support him.

The Guthrie is a Monument to Hate and Intolerance as far as I am concerned.

Never heard of him. Must be a great guy.

All of you stop it. You’re harshing Max’s mellow.

The Romans used to punish parricides by binding them into a sack with a dog, a cock, a viper and a monkey. Sort of thinking it would be fun to just tie up Raindog and Bud together in a sack, toss them off the Guthrie’s bridge to nowhere into the Mississippi and see what happens.

My sack is bound to my cock.

That’s slang, by the way, for “my testicals are bound to my penis.”

Max, I think you might want to check if you’re still drunk.

:)

Totally party hardy to the max, you rad spaz.

I instantly regretted that post.

you have until sundown to atone.

True dat. I’m going to run out now and empty my pockets into a river.

(Runs to river)

Whoah. There’s a bag with raindog and bud in it!

OK so I looked up Parricides and this is what I found:

Noun 1. parricide – someone who kills his or her parent
liquidator, manslayer, murderer – a criminal who commits homicide (who performs the unlawful premeditated killing of another human being)
patricide – a person who murders their father
patricide – murder of your father

What gives TBartel?

If anyone is at odds with their parentage it is Joe Dowling.

You see, seening as I am Irish, I see Joe Dowling as the worst kind of Traitor. He really should know better!

He earns over $350,000 a year working with people and MANY of them no doubt support Gay Marriage and have been dealt Hateful blows by the Bush Neocons…and Dowling is a Bush supporter?

What a slap in the face!

Someone in the Arts who is suppose to care about the inner workings of the human soul…and he supports Bush!?!

It defies logic, inspires my disdain and deserves scorn.

Joe Dowling is a souless egomaniac who feasts on the suffering of others.

Plus he likes directing in a Proscenium.

No doy. I’m finna book.

Plus he wears a moustache.

Anyone who wears a moustache and is not a cop has got something to hide!!!!

Hey. I resemble that remark.

My point exactly!!!

Oh. Good point then!

Dog, Are you still mad about Dowling contributing to Bush in 2004? From which you can infer he agrees with every Bush policy?

My dad’s in the river?

Aaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Sob.

Yes TBartel.

And Yes. If he supports the Man he supports the Man’s Plan.

Would YOU give Bush ANY $$$?

Exactly. I don’t care if he tried to dismiss it as “political gamesmanship” – which was inferred when he game $$$ to Kerry after his Bush $$$ was discovered.

Had the City Pages not exposed his Bush contribution he probably would be the Head of the NEA by now. He probably will be someday anyway.

The Bad Sleep Well…

Isn’t the guthrie in financial dire straights right now? They can’t handle the operations of their new facility at all. Maybe ikea will actually move in.

Saw Lost In Younkers last night: It’s quite good. The high school kids in the show are absolutely unbelievable.

Isn’t the guthrie in financial dire straights right now? They can’t handle the operations of their new facility at all.

Where did that come from? We’re doing just fine, thanks for asking.

Just fine melodieb?

Even with Joe Dowling’s intolerance and Neocon beliefs?

Hey Raindog, reality check: there are lots of people in the Republican party who are doing fine financially. So if your claims of Mr. Dowling being in fact a Republican, then I’d bet that they’re doing well financially as well. Put two and two together, broham.

It defies logic, inspires my disdain and deserves scorn.

I’ve read many of your posts, and you use many, many fallacies, which immediately cancel out any points you try to make. Do you even know what a fallacy is? It’s where you make a claim that doesn’t logically make sense.

I haven’t seen one of your posts without a few fallacies tossed around here and there. So you talk about logic.

So far in this thread I’ve seen you use:
-Red herring
-Poisoning the well
-Straw Man
-Ad Hominim
-False dilemma
-Faulty analogy
-Non sequitur
-Loaded label

I recommend that you don’t talk about others defying logic when you yourself defy logic.

I recommend you get laid.

What category is that comment in?

So, Raindog, if City Pages hadn’t exposed Dowling’s Repuke contribution, would you have the same opinion of him? You wouldn’t have known he was so “evil”!

You lowering the discourse in every thread is not gaining you any credibility whatsoever. (Not that you had any in the first place, mind you.)

With friends like you, Dems don’t need any enemies. Don’t do us any more favors, please.

I propose that the site name be changed to MnHate.com that’s really all it is anymore.

I’m going to agree with Tom on this one.

Simp, I think we can narrow down the haters to a few. If we just ignore them, or tie them into a metaphorical sack, they’ll float away, flailing against themselves while we happily chatter on the banks.

Yeah. Ignore the TRUTH at your peril Hippies.

That’s exactly the SAME way the WIMPOCRATS have allowed themselves to become DOORMATS to the REPIGLICANS.

You people are so fucking beige. You’re like the wallpaper in a Holiday Inn Lobby.

Pointing out that a major arts figure in this town is a DEVOUT BUSH SUPPORTER might not be the TRUTH YOU WANT TO HEAR but IT IS THE TRUTH NONETHLESS.

And reducing my comments to Hate is a directly out of the Rove Playbook.

Congratulations on doing your part to lower the discourse to inaudible levels.

No, I don’t think that’s Amber, unless she’s engaged in a vicious satire.

You know, basing someone’s worth on their political views is exactly what’s wrong with political discourse now. you don’t just disagree with someone, YOU HATE THEIR FUCKING GUTS BECAUSE THEY DON’T AGREE WITH YOU!

That’s not ok, even if it is Bush supporters. Believe me, just look a little harder and you’ll find legitimate reasons to hate them in most cases.

Raindog66 Oct 3 2006
11:53 am

Nope you’re wrong.

Someone being a Bush supporter is proof enough for me that they are an asshole.

As are their defenders.

No offense.

Oh what a tangled web…

Guthrie turns to Bush.

*sigh*

One vote for MNhate.

Guthrie turns to Bush.

I know! Isn’t it sad!?

And Dowling’s using our taxes to support that bastard Bush.

I had no idea!

It’s great we have this forum to get the truth out there.

What’s with all the hate??? this is a free country after all. Just because someone disagrees with your politcal views, doesn’t mean they deserve to be hated. Hell, just vote as you see fit. That’s what this system is all about.

BTW, this thread started out to be about a magazine’s idea that the Guthrie is a damn good building. So how does this get to be political?
WTF, lets just stay with the posted thread.

well I’m sure you shopped at a store owned by a republican so now you’re a bad person too for spending money there that goes to profit that gets sent to bush

so, seriously, just shut up

Brother Lurker Oct 3 2006

I agree with Other Lurker.

People need to get off Raindog’s back!

Does this Dowling fellow produce crappy plays or something? And if he does, is it because he’s a Bush supporter?

Or is being a Bush supporter make him incapable of producing a good play?

All he owes anyone here is well run operation that puts out high-quality theater for the money you pay for tickets.

And welcome to the world of sock puppets.

sock puppet critic Oct 3 2006
3:09 pm

Or is being a Bush supporter make him incapable of producing a good play?

Based on what I have seen? Yes.

Feel free to elaborate if you can.

Well, I don’t know of a single person I can consider intelligent to still be a Bush supporter as of October 2006.

The only good plays I’ve seen are ones that are written by what I’d consider intelligent people. That doesn’t mean, that in my opinion, being a Bush supporter makes someone “incapable” of producing a good play though: I just can’t imagine it.

Are you smarter than Bush s4xton?

I have known Monkeys that were smarter than Bush for Christsakes!

He was supposed to be a JOKE but you people didn’t get it!

The Guthrie is a cool building. They put on cool plays. You should all go see Lost In Younkers. Then come back here and talk about it. Then we’d have something to discuss other than watching the same convo play out over and over and over again.

Someone being a Bush supporter is proof enough for me that they are an asshole.

Why is it in the United States that a person’s political beliefs cause people to judge whenther they are a good or bad person? It’s good that we are so passionate about our beliefs. But what difference does it make if Dowling is a Republican or not? Those are his beliefs. Whether you like them or not is a different story, but that doesn’t make him a bad person.

It just doesn’t follow. It makes no sense. It’s like saying that [insert religious group here] are bad because they aren’t [insert another religious group here] supporting people.

It’s absolutely ridiculous and makes no sense.

So Dowling supports Bush. Who really cares.

All he owes anyone is a show in exchange for their money.

Right on Torin and Rat.

Raindog66 Oct 4 2006
2:47 pm

If you don’t think Dowling is an Asshole for supporting Bush than you are insane.

And I’m sorry but it DOES make him a bad person. An Asshole in fact.

You can apologize for your fascist friends all you want but your’s is the logic that is flawed.

By your thinking – those who supported Hitler weren’t bad people.

To use your logic:

It’s like saying that [NAZI's] are bad because they aren’t [ANTI-NAZI's].

Yep. That’s what I am saying.

And I never said Dowling OWED me anything. I simply pointed out that he SUPPORTS BUSH.

Sorry if the TRUTH hurts your ears. I know it certainly does the LOCAL MEDIA who consistently give the right wing a free pass -on everything – including PEDOPHILIA!

can the moderator of this site ban people from posting?

can the moderator of this site ban people from whining?

That’s a crazed rant if I ever saw one.

Rave on, raindog. Stone blinded by hate and lovin’ it.

mine is a legitimate question. lots of other sites ban trolls, not sure why this one doesn’t. i guess cuz you don’t have to register? i don’t know, i’m just sick of one person hijacking every single discussion.

eventually places like the walker art center (ad on front page) won’t want to be affiliated with a site that is quickly becoming a playground for one person to rant about nazi’s and a$$holes all day long.

Raindog66 Oct 4 2006
3:36 pm

Not hate at all.

Simply the truth.

Why is that so hard for you to grasp?

I grasp. I just find your rhetoric over the top. It’s staring to look like your doing a bit of some kind.

She might be workshopping some themes for a one-woman show: Called Bush is a Nazi.

That’s groundbreaking.

Don’t worry compubox, The Walker would have no trouble with that.
