Sorry for no misc. links yesterday. I was out of town again, but I’m back now. A big set of aggregator updates coming today and some details on the pub quiz next Tuesday.
8:55 am
So where is Raindog66 today blasting the Twins?
Fucking Coward! I have some Crow with west nile virus for your dinner.
9:02 am
Yikes.
9:26 am
OK it was a little harsh for pre-8 am, but people are not held resonsible for their idiotic opinions. I wish Raindog worked for me. At their next job review I would pull out all these moronic rambling and say, “you fry the fries pretty good but I don’t think someone with terrible reasoning skills like you deserves a raise.”
9:59 am
Someone give Mpls Simpleton a hug!
10:28 am
Matt, wasn’t Amy Klobuchar the one with the first Senate TV ad of the season? Two or three weeks ago she was running a piece on putting a corrupt judge in jail–I saw it during the morning news on channel 9.
10:32 am
It’s the first Kennedy ad.
Amy has had a couple, the I locked up democrats and the recent one about 48 hour hospital stay for new mothers.
10:33 am
Indeed. This is Kennedy’s first ad of the season. Klobuchar has now released two.
10:38 am
I’m no political expert, but I think if you’re running for governor, you should try not to appear insane.
10:40 am
Amy Klobuchar has already put out two TV ads.
They’re much more different in style.
10:44 am
I’m not political expert, but I question the tactic of filing a complaint that repeatedly raises (and dismisses) the question whether your car was ticketed while you were cruising for gay sex.
10:46 am
I’m not a grammarian, either.
10:50 am
I’d be interested to know what the great advertising minds who hang out here think about the Senate ads. Personally, I think both parties ads are pretty good. I like the Kennedy ad… good get-to-know you piece. Quirky, fun. “I don’t know why, but I approved this message.” Good stuff.
And the Klobuchar ads are also really good… going after the Democrat judge, helping get women more time in the hospital after giving birth.
10:52 am
See, I for one would never have gay sex with Mike Hatch. What if I couldn’t perform? I’d be sued!!
11:16 am
Kennedy and Klobuchar are trying to accomplish two different things: Klobuchar needs to be defined, to let people know what she’s about. Now we know she’s a fair, successful prosecutor who also knows a thing or two about health care. Aside from some references to lobbying, she was for most voters a blank slate before.
Kennedy needs to distance himself from Bush and connect with all those folks who are tired of rubber stamps for el Presidente. His ad’s talk about how he’s not a party guy, how he’s independent–that helps you ignore his voting record. Plus, the sense of humor in Kennedy’s is a great way to connect with folks who don’t pay attention to policy but vote anyway.
Both of them accomplished their missions. Kennedy’s may be misleading, but the humor makes you want to forgive that.
I think the last DFLer to run any humorous ads was Wellstone–courtesy of Bill Hillsman. Maybe I’ll go read that CP interview…
11:35 am
It’s an interesting stylistic contrast, and I think Jerad is right — Kennedy is trying to distance himself from his record as a yes-man for the exeecutive branch. In terms of which ad set is more effective, I think it’s Kennedy’s, as much as it pains me to admit it. Humor is a proven tool in the advertising world, and it’s so rare in political arena that it has a dramatic impact. Jesse’s ads during his campaign provided ample proof of that.
11:42 am
I guess we deserve a Yes man if we dismiss his 90%+ voting record because he has a funny commercial.
12:57 pm
I’m a day late to this post, so the car in the pool link is now http://www.mnsun.com/articles/2006/07/26/news/ri03pool.txt – but there’s no photo of the car in the pool!
More visual aspects CAN be found at KSTP (car not in the pool – skip it), WCCO and (my opinion) the best treatment of the story over at KARE (SPEAKE!)
12:58 pm
Klobuchar’s initial ads are terrific and differ from most democrat ads which promise to give you stuff. Eventually though, as we get closer to November, she’ll have to run ads telling you what she’s gonna do for you (more spending on this and that).
Kennedy’s problem as the republican in this race is not that he votes with Bush, Bush has a higher approval rating in MN than the country as a whole (last strib poll, sorry no link). Kennedy’s problem will be how he deals with Klobuchar’s “free stuff” ads … does he ignore them, up the ante, or attack them as wasteful spending? But we won’t know for months.
1:11 pm
I think Klobuchar’s ads are terrible. They illustrate everything that’s wrong with political ads. If I saw them on TV, I’d want to change the channel.
Fuck this soft-focus gusy bullshit. Hire some people (like Bill Hillsman) who actually know how to make a damn ad.
If Coke made ads like this, they’d be in 3rd place behind RC Cola.
1:13 pm
Not to BUZZKILL but the Twins are still 11 games out.
And a Billion Dollar Boondoggle of a Stadium won’t help this CHEAP franchise improve one iota.
You can take that to the bank! …

Where is my check Motherfucker?
I took it to the bank and now I would like a withdrawl!
Raindog66 needs a public flogging.
1:36 pm
You two should take your little flame war to e-mail or IM.
2:16 pm
Foster are you the kind of person that just gets walked all over and never holds people accountable?
You have a job just waiting for you with the Minneapolis police department or the park board or the school district.
2:19 pm
I hate it when you fight!
3:04 pm
You don’t hold anyone “accountable” by calling them names on the internet.
So what are wild mood swings like anyway?
3:34 pm
Bah! Mood swings? The mood is always RAGE!
3:43 pm
***NEWSFLASH***
Twins still 8 games out of first place.
Ok and…
Twins Billion Dollar Stadium still a BOONDOGGLE.
Talk to me in September when the Twins are 15 games out and you guys are still playing with your Mauer sideburns.
3:47 pm
Oh and Rosebud is a sled in case you left before the end.
(Which I assume you did Mpls. Simple-it-ain’y-over-tl-its-over-ton.)
3:47 pm
The only personal trait that Mark Kennedy is honestly running on is the fact that he’s a goofy motherf**ker. And let’s just say that soft focus is Amy Klobuchar’s friend.
3:59 pm
Twins Billion Dollar Stadium still a BOONDOGGLE.
Billion dollar stadium?
Where the hell do you get that number?
btw/ Twins are about to be tied for first in the wild card.
4:00 pm
Ah…Tied for Wild Card Spot!
That means playoff Pussy!
4:03 pm
Ah…Tied for Wild Card Spot!
Oh yeah that’s right. You’re from Minnesota.
Tying for 2nd (or 4th as the case may be) is as good as winning.
Did you play soccer as a kid?
And I don’t want to burst your bubble but the season has a ways to go yet…and your Twins once again are not spending any $$$.
They leave that for the taxpayers in Hennepin County.
Yum Playoff Pussy. My favorite!
4:11 pm
Champs, you are correct on both counts. Someone get Amy on What Not to Wear!
4:51 pm
made ads like this, they’d be in 3rd place behind RC Cola.
oh now you’re just trolling, because everyone with any taste knows RC is the superior cola, but has been marginalised by big soda lobbyists and america’s obsession with binary choices!
5:00 pm
Also I’d like to point out that the corn lobby (especially our pals ADM) are responsible for the tariffs on importing sugar can so they have a market for their awful HFCS to be used as a universal sweetener in american processed foods. If the government dropped the tariffs (especially since it’s kind of a free trade violation the rest of the world is fairly pissed about) real sugar would be equitable in price (possibly cheaper!) and it would probably be snapped up for use in foods here. This would be wonderful, because not only does real sugar taste a hell of a lot better (ever had soda in another country? why does it taste better? because they use real sugar and not HFCS), but it would actually be better for you. HFCS is substantially worse for you than real sugar and has even been linked to certain conditions like irritable bowl syndrome.
Ugh. One thing I loathe about the midwest is the ag lobby.
5:02 pm
I agree with tmayhem. RC is the Royal cola. Another reason we don’t get a choice of RC with our Freedom Fries may be that the French respect RC Cola.
Also Ne-Hi is wonderful too.
Damned Big Pop (Soda) lobby.
5:06 pm
I believe the sugar tarrifs are to protect domestic sugar beet production in poor agricultural areas like ND, MN, and NE.
I would guess that even without the tarrifs, corn syrup would still be the sweetener of choice.
While bowling last week, the guy in the next lane had the irritable bowl syndrome. Everytime he would miss pins, he would give them the finger. He was definitely an irritable bowler. I don’t know how his bowels were though…
6:22 pm
Screw all of you RC Cola apologists. Tab is the shit.
10:35 pm
Bitch, bitch, bitch.
I think Kenneddy is running the risk of letting his opponents attacks define his campaign. He needs to get back on his message, whatever that is, and it can’t be, “I’m not George Bush” because that’s a stupid message, for one and it’s dumb. He shouldn’t run around DEFENDING his votes, he should run around PROMOTING his votes. Maybe he is doing that, but if he is it ain’t showing.
2:06 am
Teams that have won the World Series from the WILD CARD SPOT recently
ANAHEIM 2002
FLORIDA2003
BOSTON 2004
Gee, that’s 3 0f the last 4. Who thought finishing 2nd or 4th would work out so well.
The Twins have gone 34-8 the last 42 games, have 4 of the most exciting young players in baseball and have a loaded farm system.
The Tigers are coming to town this weekend and there most likely will be 40,000 strong for each of the games.
Now would have been an excellent time to contract them.
1:54 am
How ’bout them Twins!
*crickets*
