Nevermind the Metrodome…

I’d give it to my dad, who would probably hoist it into a tree and use it as a deer hunting stand.

At a former job I inspected that skyway for asbestos.
The U didn’t want it unless it was free of asbestos so samples of the interior sheet rock and the roofing were tested.

Results: No Asbestos!

It was quite fun because it was still attached to the building and I got to ride in a manlift up to the gaping maw where it used to be attached on the north side of 5th street.

280,000-pounds?! Yikes!

Did you wear a asbestos mask and suit just in case?

What would I do?

In my stupid hat and gloves, at night I lie awake
Wonderin’ if I’ll sleep
Wonderin’ if we’ll meet out in the street

these guys i know are in the planning process of building a skyway between their neighbooring homes. it’s going to be a crackup!

oh yea, and this is a college community btw.

How about a park installation dedicated to The Replacements? It could have multimedia features like the light rail stations.

They should attach it to the end of the cantilever on the new Guthrie, in a next step to cobble together an actual bridge across the river. Couldn’t make the place look much worse than it does now, IMHO.

Couldn’t they reuse the skyway somewhere else downtown?

At first I thought that this was Saint Paul’s “skyway to nowhere”, the one that used to connect Marshall Field’s / Dayton’s to Wabasha Court.

Hmm… maybe they should somehow incorporate it into the Metrodome! It would be “hip-and-edgy” !

isn’t there a skyway to nowhere by the nicollet mall LRT station too?
build something there, already! it’s unseemly.

also I remember seeing that skyway over by the grain elevators and being like ‘wtf is a skyway doing sitting out here?’

tear down the skyways, tear them all down. the destroy street life on the sidewalk.

The street life could be so great mid winter!

Never, ever make light of a cantilever. You need them. I need them. WE need them.

the street life is good in Toronto and it’s just as cold there.

We canta-leve without them!

I have been to Toronto in the spring and I was not super impressed with their street life throughout the downtown. There were big areas of life though, ’tis true.

I have been to Chicago in the winter and everyone was bundled up & hauling ass or hailing cabs.

Why does the street need to be full of life when it is full of traffic? Plus, the skyways get rather busy. I’d rather have pedestrian traffic separate from car/bus/train traffic simply for safety’s sake. Plus, walking the skyway allows me to get from place to place much quicker.

Anybody who comes back with the retort that “skyways are barren” should think about Town Square in St Paul and IDS Center in Minneapolis before saying anything so ridiculous. Cities that don’t have skyways have their busier and less busy areas.

Plus the skyways have been good for the cities. And you have to remember that when they were first starting to build skyways in Minneapolis and St Paul, it was to compete against malls in the suburbs. So think of them as an anti-sprawl measure.

Whoa, thanks g rote. I will have to add that to my list of places to see.

Forget asbestos, what those guys don’t know is that I’ve vomited all over that baby.

Oh, Indie, what haven’t you vomited on?

Come to think of it, you, Max.

But that’s pretty much it…

If you want to see how a skyway should be done, head to Des Moines. You can get just about anywhere in Downtown Des Moines via skyway. Here, it is much more hit and miss…

…thanks, in no small part, to the %&#&*#%&*#% North Star Building.

I see the Grand Canyon’s ultimate cantilever getting about two months into construction before some clever Ed Abbey acolyte finds a way to monkeywrench the thing out of existence.

Rolling nightclub. Add a railing on top, circular staircase and 2 bars. Mix of lounge furniture and swivel stools.
