Tom Meersman at the strib reports that people in Wisconsin are apparently getting tired of being a dumping ground for Minnesota trash. According to the story, Minnesota sent 840,000 tons of waste (or 25% of all our garbage) to Wisconsin, Iowa and the Dakotas in 2004. Almost no outstate garbage is imported into Minnesota. Ha, ha.

All they have to do is raise their prices for taking it.

In Sim City I always set it up so that a neighboring municipality receives my trash. Who wants it where you live?
On that note, I was born in Wisconsin and also went to University there. It’s a pretty state, perhaps we should find a different dumping ground. How about Michelle Bachman’s backyard?

Exactly. It’s not like we’re sneaking into Hudson in the middle of the night and leaving our garbage there. Charge us twice the price and I’m sure we’ll figure out somewhere to put it here.
On a related note, there are some cities in Europe that charge households for trash disposal by the can. I think that’s a genius idea and we should do it here. Discuss.

Charging by weight or volume is an excellent way to deal with trash. The current system subsidizes wasteful consumption practices, which the Europeans figured out awhile ago. The reason why Minnesotans export lots of trash is because MN solid waste taxes are higher than neighboring states, and those extra funds go to to build recycling and waste reduction infrastructure (at least until the state diverts those funds away to the general fund as they’ve done with lottery taxes over the past few years).

Construction and demolition, and in fact most commercial trash and garbage, is handled by private haulers and landfills and charges are based on actual or historical weight, volume and type of material being disposed of.
Private garbage inserts politicians into the equation with the expected results, but the whole system still works pretty well. This is just one of those “slow news day” issues.
