As a Walker blogger highlights the scene at the Belfry Center for Social and Cultural Activities in South Minneapolis, I’m prompted to ask: Is there an arts underground in the Twin Cities? If so, where are you finding it?

Why should I tell you???
8:38 pm
Am I a newbie or a poster with multiple online handles?
Hm…
8:52 pm
Is there a Mpls art underground?
No.
9:34 pm
I know! I know! Poster with multiple online handles??
You have three posts and only one comment!
9:36 pm
Underground? Maybe. Afterpartys? Fuck yeah.
9:46 pm
Taylor: no arts underground?
Then I assume you’ve visited all of these galleries, these exhibits, and these collections?
And you of course you must know who all of these local visual artists and performing artists are.
Is there a Mpls art underground?
Yes. And it’s huge.
9:46 pm
Multiple handles are called sock puppets.
10:07 pm
And there’s always this.
10:29 pm
Matt: I assume Taylor was being sarcastic.
However, thanks for those links. I love the gallery listing!
11:08 pm
DeRusha: you’re kind of a dick, aren’t you?
Wait, I’ll answer for you: yes, you’re kind of a dick.
11:10 pm
Uh. What did I do?
11:13 pm
DeRusha, don’t play, you know Chip’s parents are fighting ’cause his mom has the hots for you and she never tears herself away from the tv to tuck him in anymore. u sexy dick!

Very curious how all of lingboy’s posts somehow involve the Walker. Very curious.
And no, I am not lingboy. I promise.
11:16 pm
For real though, has anyone been to the “underground” art scene in the basement of that apartment complex on the NE corner of Hennepin and Franklin? A cement room with a floor covered with rabbit pellets and some very creepy/intriguing photos from a turn-of-the-century Minnesotan cross-dresser name Frank Runk-it’s as if Rohypnol sponsored a show. (p.s. not sure about accurary on photographer’s name.)
11:16 pm
Of course, Sarah. Happens to me all the time.
11:19 pm
Yeah, now that I read Taylor’s comment again, he probably was being sarcastic. Sorry, Taylor. (It’s hard to tell sometimes when everything is typed.)
11:19 pm
Leigha, we know all about your fake posting name: it’s Chip, isn’t it?
11:20 pm
Maaaaaaaaaaybe.
Sadly, I can only keep one fake posting name at a time…as an actor, I don’t need any extra characters floating around in my head.
As for the arts underground – I’m not nearly cool enough to know about that kind of stuff.
11:21 pm
And I wasn’t being sarcastic about your links. I’ve added the gallery listing to my favorites– great resource.
11:24 pm
Oh wait – I do know about Scott Seekins. That’s something.
11:25 pm
During my entire tenure in Minneapolis, I always thought it odd that I never really hung out with the MCAD crowd (other than Soo Vac and Op-Ox after-parties). I’ve always assumed there was probably something more going on in that scene that I had never discovered.
Also, doesn’t it seem that so much of the scene in Minneapolis revolves around underground fashion instead? You’ve got events like Voltage, bands like TV Sound, mini-scenes like Design Collective and Cliche, and of course those uber-hipster parties thrown by L’Etoile mag.
11:41 pm
Yeah, isn’t there a Fashionistas thing Friday night?
11:58 pm
I don’t know about the rest of the underground, but I have been smuggling art in from Santa Fe for years…
12:06 am
If Scott Seekins is part of a local arft underground, I am sure it is not his intention to be. Never has so much self-promotion been wrapped up in one white costume (or black, depending on the time of year).
12:16 am
I don’t know much about the goings-on here these days, but I used to hang out with plenty of MCAD students over a decade ago. And I must say, there was certainly an underground art scene back then — one that included endless dumpster diving.
8:36 am
I was being cheeky.
The ability to summarily present a close to comprehensive gallery listing and roster of local artists would I think indicate that there isn’t an arts underground in Minneapolis — visual art and performing art included.
Not that every single event gets coverage, but galleries and performances are pretty good these days about self-promotion with list serves and publicized openings and such. The Belfry, for example, has been hanging notices up in local coffee shops for well over a year and the short films debuted at Bedlam got play and press at the Oak Street.
Even the newest locations for visual art seems to be new condo developments, like recurring shows in the commons area of the new 801 building on Washington or last year’s Public Art Auction in the same area.
And even these displays are partly to get people into the new developments to look at the model units in the building, so they have more than enough exposure.
I agree with Rex, le fashion scene is much more in its development than other local arts.

I am jealous that you know how to make one of those lines, Taylor
Looking at the HTML source for this page, I am no longer jealous, because I have stolen your ability. Now if I could just figure out what this is good for.
9:42 am
I learned it from champs, who is a master of HTML code. Don’t let your new powers destroy you, Max.
9:59 am
I
won’t.
10:11 am
stop it with the lines. damn it.
10:20 am
Uh-oh. I’ve already abused my tiny new powers.
11:04 am
I wonder if this would work?
If so, being able to submit straight html could be problematic…
11:54 pm
did you know artists are starting to use the studio spaces at the soap factory?
But, yeah, thats above ground. No one gos in the basement except DeathProj
11:49 am
While I definitely want everyone to visit our blogs, I’m not lingboy either. I’d be more upfront about pimping our blogs.
2:59 am
does anyone ever read the walker blogs except staff?
7:38 am
Walker blogs are dull.
6:13 pm
