Minnesota Back in the Day

Oh my god — I’m loving this. I wish I didn’t have any work to do, I’d spend all day examining these.

There’s something both sad and beautiful about photos from that era.

True. But it makes me happy that Hennepin avenue doesn’t still look like that.

This is actually far more exciting that it should be. I’ve sent this to my entire family, they eat this sort of thing right up. Good stuff.

Boy, I wish I could have seen a production of Handy Andy.

Yeah I’m really enjoying this, but so far no shots of my 1880something building ):

Also I’m amazed at what a bombed-out wasteland the riverbanks used to be. They were constantly playing man vs. nature and tearing shit up, but the things they were able to accomplish with the technology of the day is mightily impressive to me, especially all the diversions and dam-building on the river.

Try the Minnesota Historical Society. For example, they have a crap ton of images of my apartment. I’m on the third floor in the middle, by the way, for those of you who want to throw eggs.

If you think Minnesota Reflections is cool, definitely be sure to check out the Historical Societies Visual Resources Database and maybe also the University of Minnesota Libraries’ Images database. The “Reflections” project was specifically limited to images dating before 1909.

FYI, the Minnesota Digital Library is currently working on a phase 2 project which will include images up to 1923 and also primary source documents on the theme of “Minnesota Triumphs, Tragedies and Treasures.”

There used to be a great database of photos from the Hennepin County History Museum collections, all of Minneapolis houses taken during the 1920s and 1930s. The database was done in partnership with and hosted by some real estate firm which apparently went under — and sadly, the database went with it. Of course, the Hennepin History Museum still has a great collection of photographs, some of which were contributed to the Minnesota Reflections project, but the digitized versions of the house photos seem to have disappeared.
