I’m very partial toward The Jungle Theater.
9:01 am
They could go see the Band Of The Moment™ playing at one of the white-belt hipster bars.
Or they could go to the MCAD MFA thesis show opening.
Or they could go see (as you mentioned) some theatre.
Or they could go see Find Me Guilty at the Parkway.
Or they could get mugged, panhandled, and shot on Block E.
Or they could go see the MOA.
Admittedly, I’m not much of a tour guide.
9:27 am
Eat at Famous Dave’s on Snelling in Roseville.
Why not?
9:31 am
This will be a great day for Lake Calhoun (I’ll be there) or a bike down the Greenway (be there, too) and then top it off with the Twins game against the Yankees (there again). Throw a Jucy Lucy from Matt’s Bar in the mix there and you got yourself one hell of a day.
9:33 am
If he isn’t coming for a month or so, he could get reservations at 112 Eatery.
9:34 am
I second the Jucy Lucy. If it weren’t good Friday, I’d be there today.
9:36 am
Get your picture taken at the Spoon Bridge.
9:37 am
Spoonbride: voted “Best Place for Outdoor Sex” three years running in the City Pages reader survey
9:43 am
Just entertained someone from thier last weekend. Try Eat Street my friend loved the food here.
9:44 am
It might be considered the best place for outdoor sex, but that doesn’t mean it’s actually happening. There’s millions of dollars worth of sculpture out there, monitored regularly. I doubt there’s a lot of sex going on around there.
10:03 am
The tee at the fifth hole at Hillcrest. Much better than Spoon Bridge. And not so many tourists with cameras.
10:05 am
Rent kayaks and put in Minnehaha Creek at St. Louis Park or thereabouts. This is one of the coolest, most unique ways to tour Minneapolis. They’ll hit the Chain of Lakes (but not Calhoun) and end up at picturesque Minnehaha Falls (get out of the kayak before taking pictures).
Head to a ball game, no not the Metrodome — to the Midway to see the Saints (sorry TBartel, the Twins might be a better playing team, but Saints games are 10x more fun to be a part of). If sports aren’t their thing, Mill City Museum, after a round at Town Hall Brewery.
One evening head to Lucia’s for some fine dining with Minnesota flavor.
Ah, Minnesota Summer, here we come!
10:08 am
Go get a Garlic Roast Beef Sandwich at Mayslacks.
then go uptown, get wasted and make their way to Luce at 1:30 am for a slice, Tuna Calente, and tiramisu.
The Jibbers map would be very helpfull for visitors to our fine community…
10:08 am
You can’t do better than seeing Mike Gunther and His Restless Souls CD Release tomorrow night.
10:15 am
jibbers used to have a really cool bar map what happened? you out there lunch?
10:20 am
Spaceman: great suggestions.
I’d also recommend a walk by the Mississippi River and a walk across the Stone Arch Bridge. Beautiful views of downtown.
At ten PM they also may want to visit 11th & Nicollet and wave like idiots in the back of our news set. That’s always fun.
10:21 am
“You’ll hit the chain of lakes” How? The Minnehaha only connects to Harriet (which is not connected to Calhoun, Isles , and Cedar. Except by under ground pumping system) by way of a short and shallow detour.
10:23 am
If the person from Baltimore is a guy, you can give him all the dining advice in the world. In end his, weekend will be a sporting event, and on to the strip joints. He’ll eat at the nearest buffet.
10:26 am
For a distinctively Minneapolis experience, I suggest a visit to the Mill City Museum and a walk across the Stone Arch Bridge.
10:26 am
Great suggesetions, though I have to say Mayslack’s is currently experiencing some questionable judgment in the food department… the garlic roast beef ain’t what it used to be.
10:30 am
tbartel
Think they make a jucy lucy with fish patties on Good Friday?
10:30 am
Go to Sea Salt at Minnehaha Falls. Then 7th street for the Karl Mueller Fund Benefit. Then White Castle on East Lake. That’ll make memories.
10:32 am
Minnehaha goes through Harriet and Nokomis — both of which are a part of the Minneapolis chain of lakes — although, yes, they are not linked together with the ones you are thinking of.
thank, jderusha — yes, the Bridge is great also. Instead of kayaking, it would be just as good to rent bikes, hit Kevin’s Calhoun, the trail along Minnehaha, then up to the Stone Arch, stop at Mill City Museum. Then end at Town Hall. Or maybe it would be more fun to start there. No, wait, start and end there.
10:37 am
Did anyone click on the link?
He is coming this summer with his wife and daughter (Age 13).
I’m guessing strip joints will be out of the question.
10:38 am
The Rat, ha! Good point. (I can’t read the link so I don’t know what it sez)
10:39 am
After sports, strippers and an all-you-can-eat at The Embers, he can get his picture taken at the Spoon Bridge.
10:39 am
The 22nd Avenue station… outstanding establisment.
10:42 am
The History Center museum in St. Paul. Particulary recommended: The terrifying tornado exhibit.
10:45 am
He could still go to sports and the strip joints, while his wife and daughter go to Mall of America.
10:57 am
the creek goes through Hiawatha and Nokomis, not Harriet, sorry. anyway, back to the stripclubs and beer.
10:59 am
An outdoor movies & music event. Preferably Loring Park, if it’s late summer and a weekday.
11:04 am
You can’t do better than seeing Mike Gunther and His Restless Souls CD Release tomorrow night.
…other than actually listening to Tom Waits.
11:10 am
You can also rent kayaks at Calhoun and paddle up through Lake of the Isles to Cedar Lake. Now, Cedar Lake obv. presents diverse ports of call, but that’s part of the fun….
As a public service, I would like to remind everyone that it is legal to drink canned beers in our public parks. That said, I’ve never understood the interplay of the booze rules and the picnic-license requirements. I have a sneaking suspicion that the park police can’t touch me if I’m staggering around drinking a bizzeer from a can, but they can ticket me if I take a breather on a bench.
11:18 am
I am leery about violating the church/state barrier, but the music at the 9:30 a.m. service at the Basilica is usually fantastic. It’s worth going to even if you aren’t a recovering Catholic.
You can stagger around Loring Park after, too, or go to Joe’s Garage for brunch. Have the pork chops.
11:21 am
mike s, there are two things that come into play: one, the cans part is because glass bottles aren’t allowed in the parks. more importantly, the beer is allowed if it is 3.2 or below, because, if i remeber right, it is then legally not an “intoxication liquor” beverage.
11:24 am
I was in the twin cities last weekend. I happened to like seeing spoonbridge. I had the roastbeef at Mayslacks on my previous visit but followed it up with 2 bottles of wine. The results were, well, not pleasant to say the least. No return trip to Mayslacks this time but I did enjoy Psycho Suzi’s. I like the Walker and MOA. Franklin Street Bakery is tasty for dessert. Last weekend I enjoyed a trek over to Stillwater which is nice too.
11:27 am
sorry, yeah the bar map is still there, its under other maps. I got tired of data entry and stopped after uptown and downtown. The new map maps out all the upcoming.org events for the city/country. That might help them out if they are looking to find concerts or whatever events while they are here.
11:35 am
Ah, yes, here it is: PB2-17 Intoxicating Liquor. Break out the Black Label!
11:37 am
I feel like an unwitting plagiarist for suggesting the Mill City Museum and Stone Arch Bridge, so let me add a twist. If the family from Baltimore will be in town on any of the following Thursdays (June 15, July 6, July 20, August 3, and August 17), they should check out Mill City Live, an outdoor music series in the enchanting Ruin Courtyard.
11:38 am
Rooftop movies at Solera are great. Brave New Workshop is hard to beat too.
11:58 am
Not to neglect St. Paul, an afternoon stroll down Summit Avenue near the Cathedral with a detour down to the Grand Ole Creamery for ice cream works for me.
1:42 pm
Try the pot roast at The Modern in NE, Summer Music & Movies in Loring Park on Monday nights in July and August, a walk to the dog park at 54th and Hiawatha (or Minnehaha Falls right next door), and maybe start it all out with breakfast at Bakery on Grand. If it’s still open, that is.
1:55 pm
Kevin’s Calhoun. I like it. It shall be henceforth called.
2:18 pm
What’s the best tattoo place in town??? (Maybe the guy needs a new tat.)
3:23 pm
Seriously, where is the love for St. Paul? Any trip to the cities requires a morning in St. Paul.
You start your day at the Gopher Bar, which makes the BEST breakfast (if you like coneys for breakfast). A short hike from there will bring you to the Children’s museum, which I have been assured is NOT a museum memorializing the contributions of kids over the years. A few blocks more, and you hit the Science museum which can easily kill a few hours. And, if dad needs to get away, just across the street at Rivercenter, every weekend in the summer offers some version of a car/boat/outdoor/half-priced computer and/or lingere show. Heading back for your car, lucnh can be found in the form of a luscious frozen pizza as cooked by the lovely bartenders at Alarys.
I don’t know about y’all, but I think I just came up with MY plans for Easter morning (minus the museums).
6:54 pm
St. Paul was cooler when it was called Pigs Eye. But, then, Minneapolis was coller when it was caleld Albion.
6:57 pm
Cooler and called, god damn it.
Honestly, I’m typing on a 15 year old keyboard — that’s the problem.
And I’m drunk.
2:44 pm
Uzbeki pizza at Crescent Moon, then coffee at Diamond’s Coffee Shoppee and enchanted stroll around the ex-industrial wasteland that makes up a good chunk of Northeast. Best day ever. seriously.
