Before you hop in the car for the commute home tonight, try out MinneapolisTrafficMap.com, a new GoogleMaps-powered real-time traffic map. The data comes from MN DOT, but is presented much more sensibly. Some of the cool features include the ability to map your trip, turns cameras off/on, and show accidents and construction.

That’s cool.
I didn’t realize MNDOT provided the traffic data in XML format.

There’s no traffic on my commute from Uptown to St. Louis Park on the Greenway/SWLRT. I ride but a few yards on Uptown streets, and once that long light at Hwy 7 and Wooddale changes, I’m pretty much home free — although one time a guy hit my bike with his Mercedes.
The bike’s rear wheel and his front license plate frame were the only real victims.

*sigh* My 12 mile commute to Evil Prairie was too much for weak ol’ me to do on the bike more than a couple of times. I have high hopes for this year, though.

feels so big-time!
kind of bay area style.

It does make you wonder why one of the media outlets in town didn’t do something like this first, doesn’t it?

Actually, we’ve had something similar on wcco.com since it re-launched a couple months ago. Go to wcco.com/traffic. You can do real-time routing, see cameras, etc.

I wish they would take Hiawatha more seriously and add some cameras and traffic info. Otherwise, it’s pretty cool.

No offense, but it’s not nearly as usable. Strib has a MN DOT one too — also not very usable.

None taken. I didn’t design it! I like that the map is so big on the MinneapolisTrafficMap site. The map is the important thing.
