This week’s Nightwatch looks at the fashion-show-as-party phenom, which has undeniably saturated the scene. With fashion-related party events popping up at First Ave, Bar-Fly, Escape, Fine Line, Solera, and even Fhima’s, the rise of local designers (or, perhaps more likely, their promoters) as a force on the scene is hard to deny (and their own magazine, L’etoile, threw a warehouse party last weekend that felt straight outta Williamsburg). Anna Lee, whose inimitable Voltage will not be held this year, gives good quote in the article, but it’s that candid cad Erik Appelwick who sums up the musician’s point of view: “Truthfully, I was looking at the models too.”

I’d be curious to see what some of the designers (Dahli? Molly?) out there think of this. I’m sure the exposure is good, but is there a downside?
Also, this weekend is the LocalHipster event. I don’t know why exactly, but I’m suspicious of that one.

the mnspeak calendar is missing the most important event of the weekend: the jugband contest at the Cabooze!

The BotJB isn’t until Sunday, but it will take at least a few days of mental preparation, so it’s a good thing that you brought it up.
If I weren’t trying to date rockin’ Robyne Robinson, I’d try and date a model. We could talk about the new issue of Harper’s Bazaar that I get every month because my co-worker’s daughter thought that’s what I meant by “Harper’s”.

While not all of the fashion show/party events are of the highest quality (and others certainly kick some ass), I like to see promoters, designers, models and venues having them – practice and experience can only help make the future of entertainment in Mpls a little bit brighter.

Addendum: the other panelists at the Walker thing, besides Robyne Robinson, are Walker curator Yasmil Raymond and Carleton College media-studies guru John Schott (he of the blog Ratchet Up).
