ArtsJournal: Modern Art Notes has an interesting little post about the 2005 acquisitions made by The Walker. In addition to a bunch of new Jasper Johns prints, the most purchases of a single artist included Mexican tattoo artist Dr. Lakra and some lithos and prints from Kerry James Marshall. Modern Art Notes lists the other purchases from last year.

Since they turned their back on supporting and collecting new media/net art, it just seems same ol’– nothing of their recent acquisition is brilliant or stop-the-presses-cutting-edge. I don’t consider them a model when they once were one of the contemporary art centers at the forefront of net art then they slammed the door on that, like ostriches with their heads in the sand.

The Walker did purchase new media art in 2005, including a sound piece by Christian Marclay.

Okay, maybe I’m wrong. They dumped their new media department several years ago and decided back then not to focus on net art commissions. Maybe they got some more funding or decided to get back in the game?
