Some of you may have noticed that Udupi — which many will say is the best Indian restaurant in town — has been mysteriously closed since early December. Apparently the owner has been charged with several counts of employing illegal immigrants.

It f**king sucks that I haven’t been able to get my Baigan Bartha fix. On a less selfish note: it’s pretty lame that the government’s kept them in custody this whole time, away from their children. I wonder what the sentence would be for the aiding and abetting charges. Anyone know?

I believe that convictions of aiding and abetting can bring a maximum prison term of five-year for each illegal alien. Sentences also normally include besides imprisonment the forfeiture of vehicles and real property used to commit the crime so the restaurant would be at stake. However sentencing for this crime are very discretionary.
Actually hiring the workers without verifying documents are misdemeanors.
There was a bill (HR 238) that passed the house a few years ago but never gained any traction in the Senate that included provisions to enforce mandatory minimum sentences for the crime as side effects of adding harsher penalties for engag in human smuggling while in the possession of firearms.

NOOOOOOOO! Udupi is a mandatory stop for me on my Metro visits.

Fake docs are relatively easy for an illegal alien to obtain. In fact, many families share them. Just make sure you don’t send two “ramon castillols” to the same employer.
I just can’t figure out why the udupi dude wanted to bring his own workers over the border & then house them too.
Way too much exposure

Cary, COLD . . . BLOOODED. Five years for each immigrant? That means that the state government could send an Indian Resteraunt owner to jail for 45-50 years for trying to give his business a boost. What I want to know is was he trying to find cheap labor from Central American immigrants, or was he only trying to find an cook that knew first hand what he was doing.

There has to be more to this story, because if the Feds went after every Twin Cities restaurant owner with illegal immigrants on the payroll, we’d all be eating @ home a lot more often.

I am surprised at everyone’s comments – except Cary! Folks – this creep committed a CRIME, for crying out loud! He brought in ILLEGAL immigrants – does anyone know who they really are? Just cooks, or something worse?
And as an Indian, I would never again eat there as my support of the rule of law that makes this country so great.
Then again, the one time I ate there, I was actually served spoiled sambar, and when I pointed it out politely, they re-heated it and served it back with cilantro leaves on top, to cover the taste and smell.
The only sad thing is, the tax payers get left footing the bill!

If he is really interested in running a legitimate business then why not try to bring a cook / employees in a legitimate way. What is stopping him to bring them in a legitimate way? America is as such was built on immigrants except for the Native Indians. So, why would some one like him get away with bringing in people illegally. So, if he is bringing people illegally to try to boost his life and provide good food, think about what else he would be capable of doing. Tax evasion – maybe…not reporting the actual sales and expenses. These kind of behavior should be strictly restricted.
