Okay, I think what makes a store "ghetto" (if I may use the term) is not necessarily its location but rather how it operates. Are the shelves stocked? Is the stuff on the shelves old, dusty, or broken? Is good merchandise stored behind plexiglass or in the back area? Do the employees obviously not give a shit?

I recall the Lake Street Target as being kind of that way when I was younger, (mostly by not having stuff that other Targets had) but now I think it's fine, and I shop there regularly.

I for one, do not appreciate that the term for an appliance used to keep the female genitalia clean, fragrant and succulent is used in a derogatory manner.

"Scumbag", however, is clearly derogatory. (That's a used prophelactic, for those who don't know).
As a sophisticated yet somewhat "uptighty-whitey", I am somewhat offended by Cracker Barrel.

Is this also what some Afro-Americans ('negroes') might call, say, Southdale?

And if in fact "Negro" is not considered politically correct, why do we see commercials running currently starring black General Mills VP's, for the "Negro College Fund"?

Huh? That's what I'm wonderin'.

Mulatto is a person of mixed white and 'negro' race.

Gelatto is a delicious frozen desert.
Chicago is somehow involved. Often In the cold and gray mornin's.
HipMN, I think I kind of know what you mean. Having lived in Chicago for a few years, I don't especially think Minneapolis has any "big" pockets of one single group. Compared to Englewood or Cabrini Green, Chicago and 22nd seems like an episode of Family Ties.*

*Sorry, just the whitest thing that came to mind.

In retrospect, post Katrina, and especially with the destruction of the Ninth Ward, I have a feeling that East Lake is now more black than New Orleans.

Hey HipMN, visit me: Penn Ave N.
67% African American, 33% under the poverty line.
Drop by for a visit. It's nice (I mean that sincerely).
