As a certified local news junkie, I was sad to see the painfully promoted new WCCO-TV news set unvealed last night is….just another fishbowl. So now while Shelby & Co. try to look serious and report hard news about mine tragedies, the death toll in Iraq, etc, some idiot will be smiling and waving at the camera. I give this about a month before they install a curtain or change the camera angles. Your thoughts, MNspeakers?

- New WCCO News Set A Pane In The Glass

A Metroblogger had similar feelings, only it started with the day’s noon newscast.
I think these fishbowls are an awful idea for exactly the reasons you express. At least on the Today show you can’t see the crowds during the two or three mintues/half hour they actually spend on news after the first half hour of the program. Does the WCCO set really *always* show the glass?
3:15 pm
Take a virtual tour for yourself on this slide show, hooha.

Bob- you won’t need to wait a month. Rest assured, that by ten tonight, some subtle changes should make things better.
I actually went out and interviewed the morons — most were drunk. I was curious as to who they were calling. It was amusing– perhaps I’ll produce that story and put it online. A cute couple came all the way from Eagan because they loved WCCO and wanted to be there for the new set.
This will not be our main set, permenantly. This was designed for the morning and noon shows. The big set is at the back of our building– it should be ready by spring.

Jason,
If you set looks like this, I bet the ratings will go through the roof!
3:55 pm
Ah… Amanda. Sweet, sweet, Amanda. She could walk behind my set and wave anytime.
4:39 pm
That’s good news, Jason. I had mixed feelings about posting this, as I like you guys at Nic & 11. My co-workers here at ALAMN like you, too. Thanks to Terri Gruca’s last story and blog on radon this week, we got more than 600 requests for a free radon test kit on Thursday alone!
I noticed the framework for the new main set went I was at the studio on New Year’s Day. Thanks for the inside scoop!

Glad you posted… I was curious what people thought.. although I had a pretty good guess.
5:32 pm
Ever thought of doing that naked news? That would go great with the window.
6:06 pm
So far at five, the set looks great. No idiots in the background… just twilight and buses. And right now ther’s me in the corner of the shot. Posting this comment.

jderusha, I could see you back there doing stuff online. Was trying to recognize the mnspeak page but couldn’t make out what you were up to. I agree that the set looked great at 5 (that might have something to do with Jeanette Trompeter being on it — she looked stunning, who needs Amanda?). No bozos out on the mall either. Is there something out there discouraging them now or is it just too early to get the drunks yet?
7:01 pm
I have to agree about Trompeter. Jeanette wins our hearts (in my household) many times over. Neither my wife nor I can stand Amelia and soemtimes change the channel when she is one. Sorry Amelia. We just get a better vibe with Jeanette.
Oh…and ya….the set. It’s nice. Anything would have been better than that temporary thing we’ve been watching for what felt like years. I really hope people don’t stand back there and make asses of themselves.
7:18 pm
Too early for the drunks. We’ll see what happens tonight at ten.

The new WCCO-TV set is great, compared to all the other stations! They just have some cheap fake backdrop behind them. I’ve been watching WCCO since I was in Kindergarden because I went to school with one of the reporters kids, through high school.
2:32 am
The new set is ok. I would have liked to see the news desk be a little more round – but Jason DeRusha explained why it had to be more boxy. The only thing I hate is that it feels smaller than the old one and looks smaller than other news sets that I’ve seen in person. I think the “main studio” (the one under construction) will be much better. Plus we need graphics over the shoulders of the anchors… that would block out some of the nonsense going on in the backround
12:53 pm
I sometimes watch the news to learn what happens. Call me silly, but I would rather CCO invest in more reporters than in classier ficuses.
But that’s just me. I understand that most people these days want soothing color patterns and a newscast that won’t cause them to think too much. For them, I think this set, and the product being delivered from it, is AWESOME.
6:53 pm
Why dont all of you jump in a lake
9:15 am
let’s start the real action…… I say the open windows are gone by January 23
Not sure I’d want Jeanette Trompeter tromp, tromp, tomping around my house
10:50 am
We put down a shade for the 10pm news on Friday.. and it looked pretty good. No shading at noon, 5, or 6 Friday… and that looked awesome. No one stopped to leer… but you still got the action of downtown in the background. Very nice.
12:41 pm
All hail King Ficus!
10:12 am
I suggest that occasionally this summer Jeanette do a remote from the lawn at Brit’s.
9:08 pm
GREAT SET change!
10:25 pm
Iam from Iowa where Jeanette came from and she is awesome! I did some job shadowing with her and that was fun! Iam moving to MN this summer to attend the University of MN and major in broadcast journalism. I will be interning at CCO! I got the internship thanks to Jeanette who is a sweetheart! We really miss her. We have this prissy young plastic women, Stacey Horst, who SUCKS!!! We wont Jeanette back, its not the same without her!
1:25 pm
I lived in MN for several years and really didn’t care much for Amelia. I am originally from Iowa, and KCCI where Jeanette came from is the BEST!! I’m now living in Nebraska ( Lincoln ), having moved from West Des Moines last summer, and all the news in this area sucks. WCCO got a great anchor/reporter/journalist when they hired Jeanette….she’s very genuine and just like the reputation KCCI in Des Moines has, she delivers the trust and accurate reporting people expect from the news. Plus she’s very personable and likable which helps for anchors delivering the news. I also remember Dennis Douda from his years in Des Moines at the ABC affiliate, WOI, altho I didn’t watch that station regularly for my news. The series Jeanette did at KCCI thru her years there called, “Jeanette Do My Job” was so great!! That’s what’s great about KCCI—they know how to bring you the news…..but they also know how to go out in the community and pull stories from places that most stations wouldn’t even think of. They are truly original and have only gotten better thru the years…..even tho I live in Nebraska now ( hopefully not for long!! ) I still miss Jeanette at KCCI when I’m back to visit and watch the news. Stacie Horst isn’t so bad—another great thing about KCCI is they know how to hire and pull in the good people in journalism—even tho some people in the country might think they are in the middle of nowhere. That is so far from the truth—Nebraska is the middle of nowhere–I know because I live here. KCCI ranks first in the nation for ratings—-that says it all…it’s a tradition in Iowa for people who know good news stations when they see it. I liked WCCO overall when I lived there and keep up by checking out the website. But of course it didn’t measure up to KCCI.
12:08 pm
I went to High School with Jeanette T. and she always was a class act. You are all very lucky to have her up there doing the news.
6:34 pm
I have been a cco news watcher and listener for years….why all of a sudden are you having music on the broadcasts. I tune in to hear the news. I’m also tired of seeing Katie on all of the local news broadcasts.
12:40 pm
Does anybody know how old Jeanette is or if she is an item with anybody?
