How much do local TV anchors make? An “expose” in the Strib covers the KARE 11 Vascellaro negotiations but what is most interesting is the supposed salaries of the anchors. For example, Don Shelby pulls in around $800,000. Is it just me or is that quite high? DeRusha — we wait your comments… and salary range.

I was just going to write a post about this story… it’s one of the most comprehensive pieces on local tv news I’ve ever seen.
Also worth a cross-link is this story that WCCO is about to catch up (and perhaps surpass) KARE in the ratings.

Very interesting story. Some of those anchor salaries were higher than I expected.
I would be willing to bet the rank and file TV reporters make somewhere in the $50K range.
Anyone willing to confirm?

Reporters do get the shaft, but I bet Jason doesn’t have to check his own email. I bet he has some intern type up his dictated comments to MNSpeak. I kid Jason… I kid.
My wife-to-be was a reporter in this market awhile back, so I understand all the hard work and long hours Jason puts into his work. I can’t say I miss the TV hair though.

Fascinating story. I’ll say this. People notoriously lie about their salaries. So you never really know what the truth is. I’ll say none of those numbers seem that out of line or surprising to me. Reporters in this market make from 30k-100k plus. It’s a crazy range. But we have some people here who are in their 20s… other’s who’ve been here for 20 years.

How cool is it that a local media guy comments on these boards? WTG J-Der.
About salaries, wow, that’s a lot.

(Psst, don’t know if anyone noticed, but Robyne Robinson commented in the post above this one. DeRusha’s got competition ’round these parts.)

Robyne’s far more elegant and talented than I… I concede already! She and I have been on a panel together… she’s fantastic. Glad she’s here!
I was here first though

$800,000 for Shelby doesn’t sound that bad when you consider that ol’ smiley Paul Magers made $1 million plus. Shelby is a fixture at ‘CCO.

Doesn’t seem out of line when you consider they are nothing more than television actors.
Compared to the pay scale for sitcoms I guess they are actually underpaid although they are also not as good looking nor as well-versed in delivering banter.
I wonder how much Amanda Congdon would charge. I probably watch her on a more regular daily basis than any of the local infotainers.
If minneapolis had an Amanda Congdon that would settle it right there.

Well, Amanda is also a friend of mine… she’s doing great, but I don’t think she’s on scale with those heavies — but she’s also invested in the future of Rocketboom.
Chuck is totally our Amanda Congdon. But hotter.

Regardless of how nice she is, there are quite a few…misspellings in her post to you.
Then again, I’m all for cheap plugs (or cheep plughs…whatever).

Gee! How nice of somebody from North Carolina (AC 704) to post here and let us know about this wonderful moneymaking opportunity?
If I could sell my bridge in Brooklyn or my chinchilla ranch to some Nigerian web site guys I’d get right in on the ground floor this deal!
For Sure!
