Has anyone else been keeping their eye on the new Friday Strib feature Nightwatch? I was initially excited by the potential and enjoyed features on Boomtown and Reggaeton. Maybe they ran out of cool places to explore, because recent nightlife pieces have moved to St. Paul and Edina. But rather than be critical, let’s help ‘em out — if you were writing this beat, what scenes and subcultures would you explore?

You know what scene I’m kinda curious about? What is it like to be a cop in downtown on Saturday night? I mean, there must be a little of this, if you know what I mean (yes, those are the same girls who showed up in this post). Do cops consider that a good job, or would they rather be driving around in their cruisers on a Wednesday afternoon? And what about the ones who get to ride horses — that must be fun!

How about some features on bars that are, um, not huge chains? (Hey look everyone, it’s P.F. Chang’s, how cool!). How about interviewing the regulars at the Turf, Hexagon, Cabooze, Lee’s, Grumpy’s, etc. etc…

I’m all over Nightwatch every Thursday, but it’s pretty tame, in my opinion. They should add some personal commentary, like the segment I do for Chowhounds. Forgive the self-promotion, but I really think that’s what it needs.

God forbid they look beyond Minneapolis to St Paul or a first-tier suburb for night life.

You’re right. Next up: the hot clubs in Mendota Heights.

What about a piece on Minneapolis’ insane D&D scene. I would play myself, but honestly I just can’t handle all the cocaine involved. The wicked spectacle donning demons that play will take a novice and effectively warp his fragile little mind before the night is through. Respectfully fear the acne filled roll-playing orgies.

How about the electronic music scene here in the TC? Lots of cool stuff going on, big names come through town pretty often…. No media exposure though. It’s as if indie rock and hip-hop are the only forms of music in this town.

Good, now come up with 44 more ideas and you’ve got your first year of columns. Then 50 more for the second year. With that kind of news hole, even you might be covering the suburbs once in a while.
