Great show, start to finish. I don't think it sold out (which I find odd) but the room was pretty crowded and the audience seemed to know what was going on. I'd like to thank whoever decided to make this an ID show. It was nice to get to see a First Ave show from the main floor, for once.

Not the tightest Hold Steady set of all time -- I'm always surprised at how drunk Craig seems when they play in Mpls, and much prefer the antagnostic shtick from their NYNY shows -- but it was still a memorable, emotional homecoming.

While I'd heard the Constantines before, I was blown away by their set. They were buckets of fun. I will definitely see them each and every time they come to visit. And TAN! were, as usual, v. good.

I'm such a huge fan of the band, I'm definitely prone to hyperbole when it comes to talking about The Hold Steady. I can't imagine anybody nowadays putting on a better live rock show than theirs - they've got everything - the lyrics are obviously brilliant, Craig is awesome as a frontman (the banter was great, I thought - there was plenty of music to go along with it), and Tad's guitar playing is killer. It just keeps getting better and better.

Everyone in the band just brings it. "Charlemagne In Sweatpants" is totally like an old Stones song, and who can argue with "Stevie Nix." I love when the audience gets excited and points at the stage, singing Craig's lyrics back at him - "You remind me of Rod Stewart when he was young/ You got passion, you think you're sexy, and all the punks think that you're dumb!" and my favorite, "He came into the ER, drinkin' gin from a jam jar!" I only wish they would've brought out a couple of horn players for "Chicago Seemed Tired Last Night." The pogoing was also great to see, I don't see that too often at shows anymore. Considering all of the acclaim they've received this year, they still played with total passion and enthusiasm - I have yet to see these guys go thru the motions.

The Constantines were pretty damn great, too. It looked like Polyphonic Spree sans robes with all those people up on stage. I'll definitely be picking up one of their CD's. I've enjoyed Thunderbirds Are Now each time I've seen 'em too. It was one hell of a show all-around.

Definitely, the Constantines pretty much blew the roof off the place, and the crowd seemed really appreciative of them. Thunderbirds Are Now! were also one of the better third-on-the-bill acts I've seen in a long time. Not to take a thing away from the Hold Steady, but I was also pretty tired by that time.

the Hold Steady were pretty good, Craig was a bit overly chatty, but his reminiscing about growing up in the Twin Cities was kinda cool.

frankly though after the Constantines set which featured every member of Broken Social Scene guesting at one point or another throughout the set (and all 12 on the last song), there was no way the Hold Steady could have topped that for me.

i didn't see the show. but if you're old enough to remember moby's then you know it was a bad place full of bad animals. i was served my first drink in that bar there at age 16. it had a clientele of hustlers, screws, drunks, and dealers. mostly the dj rocked, but it was never really a place to see a band play.

now the longhorn was a different story, and they actually served and let slide by a large number of underage partiers, like me. it was extremely fun, not chic at all, and you had to be careful upon exit 'cause if you had too much to drink the stairs were not easy to navigate. the bands that played there were of course legendary.

when it changed over to zoogies--!!!!---what a surprise. one night, suddenly, you could see Yipes! and 2 guys making out on top of a pool table at the same time.

totally off topic. sorry. ahh. the good old days.
