Katherine Kersten rolled out a doozy moral tale over the weekend, claiming that most of society’s ills can be blamed on porn. Try on this scrap of nostalgia: “What about Grandma’s conviction that sex is about love and family? What about abstinence till marriage? They’re laughed out of town.” Kersten, baby, you don’t wanna bring my grandma into this. For those who think they can whip out the same brand of pithy platitudes, Blotter has introduced a Katherine Kersten haiku contest.

That was a great piece by her.
The paper gets a lot of hate mail about her. I had never read anything by her before but the new tribune site makes it easier to find her column.
If the tribune’s readship hates her – then I’m down with her!
Anyone wonder what form pornography took before moving pictures?
Who was the first one to film a sex act and then sell it to someone else?

Americans become more puritanical by day, and more obsessive by night. This repressive/obsessive behavior may likely be due to our trashy depiction of what sex is. Someone said, and I wish I could remember who said it, In Europe, sex is a fact; In America, it is an obsession. When I was growing up my mother told me that girls who did that sorta stuff were low in self-esteem, had little or no self-respect, or were dealing with issues of self-hatred. Tell that to Diablo Cody, who would never have dared write her book 20 years ago. Mens attitudes have changed little, but their access to this sort of thing has increased and become normalized over the last 20 years. Ask Bill Clinton about that one. I think, as in all things, that article is partially true, and partially puritanically obsessive.

KK: We sense something is disastrously wrong with such lascivious conduct. But in America in 2005, we’ve lost the language to say exactly what. The players and women involved were apparently consenting adults. And consenting adults can pretty much engage in whatever sexual activities they want, right? For decades, enlightened free thinkers have worked to drill this into our heads.
This is asshattery. The people working on those boats did not consent to that work environment. I don’t think this would be news if it involved only a group of football players at a strip club.

It’s all about me me me. If I decide it’s ok then it is OK. What we have in America is an increasingly large population of spoiled brats who aren’t guided by principals except what is relatively moral to them, don’t take responsibility for themselves, and seem to find problems with any type of authority. They don’t feel bad about any action. Many of these people are now parents and this attitude will now be perpetuated as what is right. It’s the end of shame and correspondingly redemption in America. We’ll just stay in a constant state of relative moral malaise.

I think we should have a hiaku contest of our own.

Well, there are the so-called “Venus figurines” found all over Europe that are ~40,000 years old. Some scholars think they’re portrayals of a mother-goddess and some think they’re paleolithic porn for randy hunters.

I’d post about the racial overtones that the media and apparently the “meta-media” snobs refuse to acknowledge which is driving this whole affair but someone will just delete it again.
So I won’t.
oh wait.
2:31 pm
Not2Sure: There’s an implication here that I’ve deleted something you’ve said, which is just plain wrong.
You did write something controversial in this post, which, a) is still there, b) I didn’t comment on, and c) I think is very dangerous. Not only do we not know the race of the players involved, we don’t know the race of the women involved. And even if we did, I’d still find that route troubling.
But whatever… please don’t drag out censorship accusations ’round here. (And please consider using your actual name, since you seem to frequently and intentionally initiate controversial topics.)

what’s asshattery? it sure sounds funny.

I just file articles like KK’s were under the “I’m old and things were better when women got raped and didn’t open their mouths” file.
4:21 pm
Oh wait I changed that one to Nostalgia.

Great, Rex. Must have been being filtered out by a downstream proxy cache then or that page was simply unavailable for viewing for a little while? I’ll safely remove my tinfoil hat now and I tip it in your direction!
There are pictures of the event involved Rex and unsubstantiated rumor has it that some are quite *ahem* revealing. Whether those pictures ever see the light of day is up to the parties involved. I’m sure some cash and legally binding contracts will trade hands given the media-savy attorney involved to make sure they do not.
Yes, there were (unsubstantiated rumor) mixed races involved in this incident. And it really doesn’t matter if there were or not for the purposes of that post. We all know what the majority of Vikings fans throughout greater Minnesota safely assumed and the image that appeared in their minds regarding this incident. Go to google and do a couple quick searches to hit some forums where less noble fans are expressing their feelings if you don’t believe me.
And finally, I didn’t initiate the topic. You asked the question of why it was such a big deal implying that in your mind “fucking hookers” is not really worthy of comment if you’re living the NFL lifestyle. I was not attempting to troll or bait and kind of agree with you. After all, this buying of women for veteran players by younger players is not a new occurrence. It has been going on for at least a couple of years that I am aware of here in Minneapolis as a “hazing” tradition.
But given that the NFL lifestyle and its inherent moral ambiguity is accepted by minnesotans, (e.g., Randy Moss can do whatever he wants as long as he performs), then what other than the ultra-sensitive race relations in this region can be used to explain this story’s longevity in the cycle. Maybe the Vikings’ bad record on the field so far this year? Or the idea that somehow Minnesota hookers/stippers weren’t attractive enough for them?
I would grant you that a legitimate complaint would be the age and unwilling participation of some of the staff/crew involved but again, that is not exactly public knowledge so I don’t think that could account for it.
Rather, this is just another little footnote in the longer history of race and sports. However, the fact that this story resonates more than a little bit kind of mirrors our local society in some of its more ugly respects. And the fact certain parties are using this context to their greatest advantage for political purpose shows just how close to losing their fight to kill a stadium deal they actually were.
As someone responded… This isn’t Alabama in 1962. It most definitely is Minnesota in 2005 and Minnesotans and especially metropolitan dwellers have this image of their state and culture and race relations.
And then there is reality.
But you’re right this probably isn’t really the right forum for such earnest anonymous discussions. The facts and their interpretations will come out in more establishd media outlets for us to consume more properly.
Any recent Scarlett sightings?

Katherine Kersten needs to get laid.

Rex — perhaps a more appropriate headline to this piece, if you’re trying to reflect KK’s opinion, might be:
What’s Wrong With The Vikings? America.
Or more specifically, American liberals.

Okay, I’ve got the answer, (if there was a question).
White Viking figurines!
