If you’re in the CARAG neighborhood and thinking about cooling off at Lake Calhoun, stay away from the main north shore beach — it’s closed today for safety reasons. No, not because a little kid went in water. Apparently there’s too much E. coli. How much E. coli? The EPA guideline for bacteria levels is set at 235, which seems like a pretty hard to contextualize number since the levels have jumped around from a seemingly low, “everyone’s having fun” rating of 23 to a whopping “everyone’s going to be really sick” rating of 855.

Glad for all the concern, but the beach at Lake Hiawatha has been closed all this year and last — at least — because of e. coli concerns.

A level of 235 for E. coli is approximately equal to 8 cases of gastrointestinal illness per 1000 recreational water users. The Harriest southeast beach had an 1800 (!) rating on 6/9. Someone must have taken a huge shit in there that day.

Being a competitve swimmer in my skinnier days, I was routinely sent to the bottom of our YMCA’s pool w/a skimmer net to retrieve presents left by others the day before.
Because the present had been left the night before a good chunk of the logs would break off and float around.
Now, supposedly, they close the pool when people pee in the water. Funny thing is, in addition to the poop thing, she wouldn’t let us out of the pool to pee — “just go in the water.”
How times have changed.
