A new study was released finding that Minnesota ranks 7th of all states in the number of lakes. And number one? Texas. Yup, insecure, over compensatin’ for everything… Texas. Upon closer examination, the study counts both natural and man-made lakes, the latter of which accounts for well over half of Texan lakes. That’s great, Texas… can’t stand to be number two in anything, so you have to go and fake your lakes? MN won’t stand for that: it’s ON. Anybody got a shovel?

What *exactly* is counted as a lake? Is there a size limit, must it have a name? Is such a definition consistently applied for every state? Is a simple count (versus a ratio) fair considering that Texas is a larger state than Minnesota?

Some geeks have combined Census data with Google Maps. One feature to note — it lists square miles of water for each state. Texas – 6,783; Florida – 11,827; Oklahoma – 1,231; Kansas – 462; Missouri – 818; Mississippi – 1,523; Minnesota – 7,238.
