Six Minneapolis bars tried to halt the smoking ban, the second such attempt since March. Judge says no dice. (Did I mention how happy I was to come home from Voltage05 not smelling like smoke?) Let’s all pledge to have a smooth Manhattan at Jax Cafe. And a can of Schlitz at U Otter Stop Inn.

I’d like to see some more hard numbers, but I will say that I’ve noticed a serious decline in the number of patrons at my local bars on weeknights. Unfortunately, many of them can’t survive on weekend dollars alone. I’ve also heard way too much whining on both sides of the argument. Also, it sounds like a lot of people are going just beyond city limits to smoke and drink. Perhaps we should consider a county-wide ban.

It is a county-wide ban. The closest place you can go to smoke from Minneapolis is…. Columbia Heights. Sharky’s, anyone?

Minneapolis & Bloomington: No smoking in any establishments.
Hennepin County: No smoking in establishments serving food.
Kind of confusing, but it affects these bars all the same.

The latest on this issue can be found on the ALAMN blog. For pure pro-smoke zealotry, you can’t beat The Attic blog, which includes postings from Mark Wernimont, a “smokeeater” device salesman.

Yes, Bob from AM Lung is happily promotng taking away property rights of MN business owners because he and his friends know what’s “best for everyone.”
He doesn’t mind if those people he’s trying to help lose their businesses and lay off their employeees.
Not to mention that the lobbying for smoking bans across the nation is being funded by the makers of nicotine poatches.

Fact check For Sandy from MAWB Squad:
I DO know that smoking bans help reduce adult smoking rates, and that exposure to secondhand smoke is a proven health risk.
The American Lung Association of Minnesota does not use drug company money for its tobacco control efforts in Minnesota. Check you facts, please, before you comment about us.

Check your facts Bob from ALAMN, the American Lung Association in 2002 recieved $2,923,061.00 from the Johnson & Johnson affiliate RWJF. RWJF owns $5.4 billion of J & J stock courtesy of Nicoderm CQ. Bob plays games by saying ALA of Minnesota didn’t receive any Nicoderm money, but the American Lung is the American Lung and the money co-mingles from the different regions sure as the sun rises in the east.
