My objection to that trade is that we gave up the premier pitcher in baseball (at the time) for absolutely zero major league ready talent. That's absurd to me. You should get at least one everyday position player in any deal like that. Not to is a complete crap shoot. You may as well just wait and lose him to free agency and get the sandwich pick. Twins traded one year's worth of Santana to a team that cold afford to sign him long term in exchange for prospects, none of which have worked out particularly well. though now they have parlayed one of those prospects into a 2nd tier MLB SS. if you think the twins were going to sign Santana to a max contract (and based on his recent rash of injuries you should thank your lucky stars that they didn’t) you’re delusional. In essence, we traded a 3-time Cy Young winner for JJ Hardy. I'm glad that this is an indication that they won't bring back Cabrera, who if you didn't notice made 11 errors in two months with the Twins. But I suppose Hardy has shown he can do what the Twins need up the middle, so we'll see. Now they need to focus on second base.
