Food on a stick

18 Reader Comments

I for one will be eating food on a stick today. I’m meeting cjc and friends at the fair after work, thunderstorms be damned.

We’ll be there this weekend. I’ll make a beeline to the roasted corn stand. Mrs. Lungs always craves the Pronto Pup. I’ll see if I feel up to the Big Fat Bacon.

cjc loves the pronto pup too, and I always take a bite. I haven’t made a plan yet as to what I will eat over the next few days, but that’s on my to-do list for this afternoon.

Inre: The video.

I go fishing without minnows.

Bait is for wimps.

bait = grunt fishing tactic

I welcome our Stick Food overlords.

When they create the Pronto Pup on a stick — on a stick, then we’ll know they’ve gone too far.

No discussion of Fair fare can be complete without a link to the myprontopup blog.

The bacon on a stick was overrated. I mean, it was good but I just didn’t taste the syrup which was disappointing. I slathered some BBQ sauce on that and it tasted just like boneless ribs, which was great. Meanwhile, I earned the scorn of the vegetarian I was with for paying $3 for bacon on a stick. Whatever, I didn’t see any piglets at the Miracle of Birth (I did see a bored mini horse), so I didn’t feel bad at all about eating it.

I prefer syrup.

Now we know why…

I prefer syrup

Over jelly? Yeah, I could see that.

I got it too, Geoff.

What would happen if the Minnesota State Fair banned trans fats?

Truthfully? Probably not much. Deep frying isn’t dependent on transfat. If they haven’t already, they could easily switch to vegetable oils. mini donuts might need some reworking, as the transfats are important for texture in those.

I wouldn’t attest to anything “truthfully” because I don’t know. But word would get out that trans fats were banned, so deep fried food wouldn’t taste the same, or so it seemed. People would attribute it to a lack of trans fats, whether it was true or not.

From a year ago:

“Fair organizers asked vendors to do away with the trans fats, which have been medically shown to increase the risk of heart attacks and raise bad cholesterol levels.

“We’re trying to give people the option,” said administrator Dennis Larson, who feels the new signs help people make a more informed decision on what to eat.”

Yes, it’s a slippery slope alright, Rat. Must be all that grease making it slippery.

My State Fair menu from yesterday:

Scrambled egg platter at St. Bernard’s Dining Hall (near main entrance)
Jerk Sausage on a Stick (Twisted Sisters, in the Food Bldg)
Roast corn (near the Grandstand) Excellent this year!

That’s it. I showed some restrant this year.
