The district would assess Downtown commercial and industrial properties to pay for things like sidewalk scrubbing, graffiti removal, hanging baskets, Downtown events and security ambassadors.

What a great idea, tax people more because the cities policies and ability of the city officials to keep the downtown safe has failed. So the solution is to throw more money at the problem. Graffiti removal should be done by prisoners or part of a community service program. If the graffiti is gang related then it should be treated as a terrorist threat. But no we are going to charge productive members of the society more because the morons are not kept in line.

Is DT Minneapolis more dangerous than all those other places you listed, kc? Not to me, but I’m not usually wandering around drunk down there in the middle of the night. If there’s any reason that there’s a lot of crime downtown is because there are so many easy targets.

When was the last time you were in DT Minnie? The worst I’ve ever seen it is usually around happy hour or on the weekends when the beggars are out, but I would doubt you would be assaulted.

The only section of DT where I avoid walking around in at night and by myself is down by MCTC on Hennepin, it’s spookily deserted after 8 pm.

United Noodle is cool, but from the sounds of it, the Asian Mega Market will have 10x more than UN. This would so rock.

The only downside: It’s in Shakopee — nothing against Shakopee, it’s the drive.

I live downtown, by the way. Have for three years. Have lived in downtown, on and off, for about seven years. Walk seven blocks to the lightrail every day through Elliot Park, which is my neighborhood, and walk around downtown, day and night, all week. Anyone who claims downtown is somehow uniquely unsafe has just not been spending much time downtown.

Also, on Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday night, you’re at much greater risk of having a frat boy throw up on you that be subjected to any sort of crime.

You’d have to adjust whatever statistics those are to populations in other downtowns. Per capita, and all that crap.

Every urban area has its problems, but pointing out that Minneapolis has a crime rate doesn’t tell me that everywhere else is automatically safer.

Not even close. Let’s say there are 100 acts of crime committed annually in City A (population 500,000), and 15 in City B (population 1300). You could say that the crime rate is a ton worse in Minneapolis, but if you actually analyze the population difference, the percentages are a lot closer together.
