Flowers Wilt

They said the victims weren’t dressed or doing anything to indicate they were Americans. Sounds like a derranged individual just lost his mind.

At first when i heard this on the news i thought is was a robbery, but then i read here that the attacker leaped to his death so now i think he attacked him because he was white.

I think it was a case of mistaken identities. He was trying to kill Michelle Bachman.

Not white, necessarily. Just a “foreigner,” I suppose. The tour guide, who was Chinese, was also injured. Animosity still lingers against the Japanese, too, for what was done in China during WWII. Western imperialisms’ sins almost pale by comparison but, yeah, the Opium War sucked as did the Boxer Rebellion.

They have crazies in China, too. Some acts just deny understanding.

Hmmm. So the options are either anti-Americanism or some random act of insanity, because how else could you explain an American getting killed in China? It has to have something to do with us, otherwise its completely inexplicable. Or perhaps the random part is the involvement of Americans and the real motive is to embarrass the Chinese government?

The killer went to some lengths to accomplish that. That is, throwing himself to his death afterwards. That’s not the actions of someone with a rational mind.

To quote Martin Sheen in Apocalypse Now: “I don’t see any method at all here, sir.”

Whatever the reason, it’s a horrible thing that happened and I can’t imagine what the family is going through. My heart goes out to them.

The strange thing is for me is that right before i clicked over to the news and say this story, i was watching a show on the history channel about the boxer rebellion. In comparison to other countries americans were much less active in plundering china as other nations were.

‘Saw’ this story

IMO it was a completely random attack possibly instigated by some nasty cyber-nationalism. If you read some international publications like the FT and the Economist, any story about China will have its comments filled with hate riddled Han racists. This atmosphere, could have given a target to an otherwise psychotic individual.

Regardless as a former East Asian History guy, China had it real good from 2400 BC to about 1622. Three to four hundred years not being on top is reasonable considering their run.

Should we send flowers?

It wasn’t anti-american sentiment. The dude was just crazy.
