High culture did kinda thrive for like three or four years there, but then they published the Classics Illustrated, and it was back to misogyny, racism, violence and crypto-facism for the standard bearers of low culture.
Whenever I think of the pre-code comics, I think of William Marston. Weirdo or man ahead of his time...

Who knew comics were trying to tear apart the fabric of civilization?

That's what made reading MAD magazine so subversive back in the day. It had a direct link (via William Gaines) to the EC Comics backlash that had resulted in the creation of the Comics Code Authority.

The CCA, of course, saved the world from all of the juvenile delinquency, war, corruption, hunger, bigotry and religious persecution that resulted from America's youth being poisoned and brainwashed by the horrors published by EC Comics. We burned those poisoned pages and, instead, spent our nickels and dimes on Archie, Donald Duck, and Classics Illustrated -- all of which resulted in no truancy from school, perfect 4.0 GPAs, world peace, happy dreams, and the Utopia we enjoy today.

Or, uh, am I missing something?

I believe Batman may have helped prevent the recent ethanol spill in Lanesboro from getting in the scenic Root River.

Batman is everywhere.
