All signs are pointing to Senator Obama declaring himself the Democratic nominee for President on Tuesday. Interestingly, he has chosen to make this important speech in Minnesota, at the Xcel Center in Saint Paul. Along with the RNC coming to town, a caucus that actually mattered and the last hurrah of the Edwards campaign, Minnesota is playing a rather prominent role in presidental politics this year. Without devolving into the usual partisan name calling and trolling, is anyone here planning on attending?

No, but does anyone know when it starts? I’m trying to figure out if it’s going to mess with my bus schedule thru DTSTP.
9:44 am
Ah, but caucuses don’t matter when you’re counting the popular vote or drumming up any other sort of statistic that makes Shrillary’s campaign look anything less than pathetic.
9:44 am
Kevs: I would just plan on it messin’ with your bus ride – that way if it doesn’t, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
9:45 am
You don’t want to just take the 5 home? Craziness.
9:49 am
Seating starts at 7pm.
Instead of standing around worshiping at the mantel of Obama I will be attending a charity fund raiser for the homeless which I consider an infinitely better use of my time.
(don’t get me wrong – unless he chooses george w as his running mate – he will get my vote – I just think these events are a complete waste of time)
9:50 am
Just imagine if there were a train that would take you st paul, kevin!
9:52 am
I am. I have no idea how early I should show up, though. I have nothing else to do so I could camp out from noon-on.
9:56 am
You don’t want to just take the 5 home? Craziness
I don’t take the 5 home. Except I did on Saturday and the guy in front of me had BO so bad that it hurt my eyes to look in his general direction.
Just imagine if there were a train that would take you st paul, kevin!
Oh heavenly days! Not. Actually it won’t affect me, the train, cause I don’t go that way anymore.
Maybe I’ll just drive tomorrow and avoid it all together.
10:07 am
I’m outta here for 10 days.
10:31 am
And the request to not let it descend into partisan name calling lasted all of two comments. Probably a new record for mnspeak.
10:34 am
Wouldn’t that be intra-partisan name calling? I don’t think that was not requested.
FWIW, I like the idea of declaring himself nominee where the Republican convention will be. It’s like how at home we always used to spit on our food so no one else would take it, like marking one’s territory.
10:38 am
Ahh, Kevs. My bros still do that – I didn’t eat a lot when they were in town.
10:43 am
Unless champs supports McCain or someone else I’d characterize his comments as sexist intra-partisan namecalling. Guys seldom get called shrill.
But Hillary Clinton must be getting used to that, by now.
10:47 am

10:50 am
I remember Dan Quayle being called shrill. I’ve also heard the term generally used in reference to Liberals as a genderless mass.
10:54 am
Maybe he was just juxtaposing her with the always polished Obama.
11:04 am
Kevs: I would just plan on it messin’ with your bus ride – that way if it doesn’t, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
Also plan on it messing with those attending high school graduation ceremonies at Roy Wilkins Auditorium that night.
11:08 am
i’ll be very surprised if he goes so far as to declare himself the winner at the rally, it’d be not too classy. and there’s precious little evidence in the article supporting it.
11:09 am
Kevin’s point on intra-partisan name calling is well taken.
Rat: re: “sexism” I don’t believe that Republicans who don’t particularly like John McCain have a deep-seeded prejudice against old white guys, nor do I believe that Democrats who support Senator Clinton are doing so out of blatent racism. So I call “BS” on the sexism label, unless Champs has made other comments to make you conclude otherwise….
11:15 am
I wish Barack Obama would have turned to Hillary Clinton in a debate, put his hand up, turned away and said, “Talk to the white hand, ’cause the black hand don’t wanna listen.” That, my friends, was the racial dialogue that I was hoping for.
11:18 am
i’ll be very surprised if he goes so far as to declare himself the winner at the rally, it’d be not too classy
What do you think the Des Moines rally was about on May 21?
“It was in this great state where we took the first steps of an unlikely journey to change America,” Obama said, just blocks from where his Iowa campaign charted its caucus victory.
11:28 am
I don’t believe that Republicans who don’t particularly like John McCain have a deep-seeded prejudice against old white guys,
You speak of us so often, yet you understand us so little.
11:28 am
“Also plan on it messing with those attending high school graduation ceremonies at Roy Wilkins Auditorium that night.”
My, just imagine how upset Roy Wilkins would be about this if he if he was still alive today!
It would be nice if the Obama people could bring the grads on stage (in caps and gowns) with the Senator to share this moment. Might be a good time to discuss his education agenda, and what sort of future these grads could expect during his Presidency.
In any case, they would work better than that guy with the red boxing gloves they always place in the camera frame at all of the Clinton rallies.
11:34 am
the timing of announcing he’s won depends on what HRC does. he can’t grab the laurel out of turn without pissing off her supporters any more than they already are. he can make it seem increasingly ridiculous for her to continue — reinforcing the narrative of his campaign with the des moines and st. paul rallies is part of this. but to say “i am now the nominee” would be nuts. he won’t do it until HRC is gone.
11:38 am
i’ll be very surprised if he goes so far as to declare himself the winner at the rally, it’d be not too classy
What do you think the Des Moines rally was about on May 21?
He’s a much better politician than that rat. He didn’t go quite that far. He knows that he’ll need to bring in a lot of Hillary’s supporters, so he didn’t and won’t be doing anything that would intentionally antagonize them. Unless he’s got some commitments from enough SDs to put him over the top, I would guess he’ll stop short of declaring himself the winner.
In fact, there’s no need for him to make that declaration, because the tv talking heads will be doing that for him,. By scheduling the rally for St. Paul, he’s just skillfully riding the waves of the media whirlwind.
11:40 am
But aren’t Clinton’s supporters too tuckered out from this weekend to get mad at Obama’s declaration.
By the way, what time is the rally beginning?
11:41 am
Yeah, nevermind. I should have read the thread.
Does anyone think that Obama is coming here as a pre-emptive strike against T-Paw being the VP nominee?
11:42 am
I heard he was coming here to meet with Sheletta.
12:21 pm
FWIW, I have plenty of unpleasant things to say about Hillary (or Kerry in ‘04, Gore in 2000 — now he’s some kind of hero), but “shrill” wasn’t one of them until the campaign started with this increasingly-tortured logic for her perceived entitlement to the nomination.
12:25 pm
Bixby- I now think it’s going to be Jindahl not Timbo. But coming to St. Paul and getting a big rally in the Excel center will steal a march on the Repubs.
12:27 pm
FWIW, I have plenty of unpleasant things to say about Hillary
Well, what’s holding you back?
I’d get in line if you want to go to the rally. There’s going to be a lot of starstruck U students cutting class today.
12:32 pm
There’s going to be a lot of starstruck U students cutting class today.
Typical cynical rat-like response… Myself and the other MBAs in my office are excited about going over to the show. He’s a great speaker and puts on a great show.
12:37 pm
Really, Rat? You don’t like Obama? This is totally new information, and I’m absolutely reeling from the shock. I hope in time you’ll explain why, because I find your dislike for Obama so fascinating that I just can’t wait to hear more!
12:38 pm
Oh, and in your follow-up commentary, please include your prognosis for a McCain-Obama election, like how many states each might win. I’m sure it’ll be grounded in political insight and very accurate, and we’ll all benefit from your perspicacity.
12:45 pm
I can’t wait to see the “he might be a ter-rist” talk from their own party if Jindal gets the nomination. Good grief, America.
12:45 pm
And when I say “perceived entitlement” I go back to her comments four years ago, when questions about running for president in 2008 were fielded with “I’m working for John Kerry in 2004″ and maybes.
Selfish people don’t know they are selfish, so it was telling that this response didn’t change until September or October, when somebody finally recognized that running for president in 2008 might conflict with re-election plans for a candidate she ostensibly supported.
12:58 pm
I can’t wait to see the “he might be a ter-rist” talk from their own party if Jindal gets the nomination. Good grief, America.
I inadvertantly waspified his name by adding that ‘h’. Neat-o! How can a guy named Bobby be a ter-rist? Or Barry for that matter?
12:59 pm
Oooh, make your own Obama logos with your own picture! I’m sure Rat has already done this and has opened a cafepress shop with his creations.
1:00 pm
How can a guy named Bobby be a ter-rist? Or Barry for that matter?
Through the beauty of the American political process!
1:01 pm
Leave the Rat alone! He’s entitled to dislike Obama, and he’s going to have to learn to live with that for eight years of Obama’s presidency.
1:02 pm
Really, Rat? You don’t like Obama?
Seems like a nice enough guy.
1:03 pm
Leave the Rat alone! He’s entitled to dislike Obama, and he’s going to have to learn to live with that for eight years of Obama’s presidency.
Only 4 years because Obama is totes going to lose 49 states in 2012.
1:39 pm
If 75,000 turned out to see Obama in Portland, I have a feeling there are going to be some long-ass lines for this one.
1:54 pm
Unless the Decemberists are playing in Minneapolis too (like in Portland) I don’t think he will get the same crowd.
2:21 pm
How many people show up at any Decemberist concert? I mean, even 40k seems a bit high to me. But I don’t know…
2:31 pm
Is this the 58th state he has visited?
2:32 pm
Will he be able to finish his waffle?
2:33 pm
Will his wife be proud of Minnesota?
2:35 pm
“You speak of us so often, yet you understand us so little.”
You might be surprised how much I understand about Republicans, kevin. Shocked, even.
2:37 pm
In Portland, A LOT of people show up for the Decemberists, especially if it is free.
2:39 pm
im going
2:57 pm
I’m not sure what bud’s talking about, but I’ll bet I could listen to Rush Limbaugh for an hour and it would all become clear.
3:07 pm
It’s so weird to try and parse talking points when they are completely separated from context. Apparently, these are all things we should mutually find ridiculous and mock Obama for. But Bud’s list reads like this:
Will Obama eat a candy apple?
Will Obama’s wife pose like Olive Oyl?
Is this the first time Obama has been to the Black Hole of Calcutta.
How are we supposed to respond? Damn! You burned him!
3:11 pm
I imagine it’s difficult to type complex sentences with one hand, Max.
3:17 pm
Alie- I”m still a little weak in the stomach from a long weekend of booze. Take it easy.
3:21 pm
Well, if you don’t believe old Bob, listen to what old Bill had to say.
Granted, some of the stuff he has said on the campaign trail of late has not made much more sense than Bud.
3:26 pm
yes, bob. that time when he said “All Your Base are Belong to Us” really threw me for a loop.
3:30 pm
My favorite thing about Bud is that I immediately think of the character on The Cosby Show who was Rudy’s little boyfriend. I think it’s awesome I associate Bud with a small black boy.
3:32 pm
Tell you what, Bud. Link to that video when it actually surfaces. MnSpeak is not a place for internet rumors that are designed to fan racial hysteria. Looks like you already know where to go for those.
3:34 pm
His wife probably won’t be proud of MN because Bud lives here.
3:35 pm
On the Internet, no one knows you a small black boy, mb
3:36 pm
Oh, Max, don’t get your “good” hand so tired, you’ll thank me when you can say it was here first.
I’ll look forward to your comments when this hits the MSM.
Does Hilary’s refusal to bow out seem more understandable?
3:37 pm
Wait, bud is WHITE?
3:37 pm
As I said, link to it when it actually surfaces. Until then, it’s just a rumor.
3:37 pm
What’s the rumor?
3:38 pm
Kenny (who was aka as “Bud”)?
3:38 pm
That Michelle Obama complained about whities keeping her down.
3:41 pm
I went to high school with a guy who knows a guy who thinks he might know a guy that might have inside information on McCain’s philandering. Just wait until October.
3:43 pm
there has to be more to it. whitey has been keeping me down since I was born.
3:44 pm
You would think Whitey would be more civil. If there is one thing I learned from Leave it to Beaver, it’s that Whitey’s parents were pretty strict with him.
Actually, I think they abused him.
3:45 pm
That’s him mnblrmkr.
Bob- how did you find me out??
On subject, my husband is dreading tomorrow and the convention as he teaches downtown. Nobody really has a clue on where and what is getting restricted.
3:50 pm
I prefer to call them sliders.
Don’t you think Bud really wanted to ask if Obama was going to finish his CHICKEN and waffles?
3:52 pm
Ckicken and Waffles is great. I used to go to Roscoe’s. Admittedly, I never ate the chicken, but I enjoyed the ambiance.
6:22 pm
The UpTake plans to stream the Obama event live!
I’m heading to the media walkthrough tonight. Tomorrow will be fun.
6:42 pm
Sorry to be so late with my emails, chuck. I hope to be better and back on the job tommorow.
7:14 pm
Chuck- Would it be available for stream/download afterwards?
7:42 pm
kc…
thing is, the Decemberists were never mentioned on Barack’s site as playing the Rally beforehand
just like Golden Smog were never announced to play the Target Center rally here in MN back in March.
and even so, while the Decemberists are from Portland, they don’t draw that well even in their hometown, free or not. on their own w/ no other decent opening acts, 5-6k AT BEST, and their usual shows are 2500-ish size (and smaller in most of the US)
8:42 pm
So the high school I work at is having it’s graduation tomorrow at 5…in Roy Wilkins arena. Yeah, we were informed that the secret service may be coming. We’re ever so happy.
8:58 pm
Just be glad it’s not Bush visiting. Then. only registered Republican seniors would be allowed to get their diplomas.
12:34 am
sandburg: Yes we should have the entire Obama rally archived and available to watch sometime soon after the event.
7:08 am
The national buzz on tonight’s speech is growing louder (kinda like cicadas on a hot summer night), expect a lot of national media (even more than the usual campaign newsies) to rub elbows with Chuck and his Uptake buddies at the X tonight.
I hope Obama brings his “A game” to the podium tonight — if you have never heard the guy speak, you should take this opportunity — regardless of who you plan on voting for in November. These Obama rallys are unlike anything seen in this country for many years — you should experience one for yourself. You don’t get the same vibe watching on teevee.
I would also like to see “Old Navy” speak in person, too. I hope his Twin Cities visit will open to the public. Kevin, others, do you have the deets on the McCain visit?
7:23 am
I wonder what the vibe will be outside in the rain? Because that’s all I’d expect to enjoy. They’ll be jammed to the rafters by 3 PM.
7:32 am
What I wouldn’t give to have the Kool Aid concession.
Is the Young and the Clueless shooting there too?
7:35 am
– if you have never heard the guy speak, you should take this opportunity —
Has he uttered any quotes worthy of Bartlett’s yet.
8:06 am
How’s this, maz?
Thanks for staying out of this thread until now. Your absence raised the level of civil discourse here considerably.
8:08 am
Maz- Obama’s works are not public domain yet, so no.
8:16 am
An exerpt from his 2004 keynote speach at the Democratic National Convention:
“Now even as we speak, there are those who are preparing to divide us — the spin masters, the negative ad peddlers who embrace the politics of ‘anything goes.’ Well, I say to them tonight, there is not a liberal America and a conservative America — there is the United States of America. There is not a Black America and a White America and Latino America and Asian America — theres the United States of America.
The pundits, the pundits like to slice-and-dice our country into Red States and Blue States; Red States for Republicans, Blue States for Democrats. But Ive got news for them, too. We worship an ‘awesome God’ in the Blue States, and we dont like federal agents poking around in our libraries in the Red States. We coach Little League in the Blue States and yes, weve got some gay friends in the Red States. There are patriots who opposed the war in Iraq and there are patriots who supported the war in Iraq. We are one people, all of us pledging allegiance to the stars and stripes, all of us defending the United States of America.
In the end — In the end — In the end, thats what this election is about. Do we participate in a politics of cynicism or do we participate in a politics of hope?
8:27 am
I’ve read both of Obama’s books, and he’s a very good writer, and obviously very well read, too. So yes, worthy of Bartletts.
8:29 am
Kevin, others, do you have the deets on the McCain visit?
Um, no.
8:39 am
I got the prune juice and blood of children concession contract for the mccain visit.
8:42 am
Well, keep us posted if you hear anything, bacause I would really like to hear and see Senator McCain in person.
8:44 am
Bob, I’ll bet even John McCain has a website where you can get info on upcoming events.
8:49 am
thing is, the Decemberists were never mentioned on Barack’s site as playing the Rally beforehand
Well, I knew they were playing there before the event, so I’m assuming others did too. And I don’t follow Barak, or the Decemerists much anymore.
and even so, while the Decemberists are from Portland, they don’t draw that well even in their hometown, free or not.
Have you seen them in Portland? I have. At a sold out show. With lots of people trying to get in. They are very popular in the Portland area.
Don’t deny the power of an outdoor show, announced ahead of time, by a local superstar band. Add Barak Obama, and those numbers will increase slightly, but Barak did not draw 70,000 by himself.
8:53 am
Well, it looks like tickets start at $1,000, and move up to $50,000 for the “Chair Level” seats.
It would be cheaper to hire the Rolling Stones to play a child’s birthday party than to catch a glimse of Old Navy from the cheap seats.
8:55 am
I got the prune juice and blood of children concession contract for the mccain visit.
Yeah, about that. We actually have a long-term deal with a foreign outfit for blood of children. High quality stuff, very syrupy. But thanks for the offer.
9:00 am
The band’s name refers to an 1825 revolt over the Imperial Russian succession (Decembrist revolt), that Meloy views as an attempted communist revolution.[2] It is not related to the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917[citation needed]. Their name is also a reference to the atmosphere associated with the month of December. The band has used the National Anthem of the Soviet Union as an introduction at many concerts.[3] Several opinion writers have noted that the Decemberists use the Soviet anthem in concerts.
Hmmm. Connection?
9:06 am
The buzz is growing that Hillary will concede and suspend her campaign, and endorse Obama tonight from NY. But then, senior staff still insists she won’t.
If she does, expect Obama to declare victory. But I still don’t think he’ll go quite that far if she doesn’t. He’ll let the media take care of it in that case.
9:09 am
This would actually be pretty cool.
9:16 am
My wife and I had the same conversation at the breakfast table this AM, kevin. In any case, the stage is set — literally — for some high political drama tonight.
9:21 am
My wife and I had the same conversation at the breakfast table this AM, kevin. In any case, the stage is set — literally — for some high political drama tonight.
That’s not surprising, I put the idea in her head last night. And that’s not all I put in her. Hey-oh!
9:24 am
(heart attack)
thud
9:39 am
Well, this morning was a satisfying one for my itchy delete finger.
I also wish I had a Kool Aid stand, because Kool Aid is delicious. But apparently it will endlessly be used as an inexact, inaccurate, and perfectly idiotic metaphor by people who like to argue that others can’t think for themselves, and make that argument by repeating a horrible little cliche they borrowed from someone else.
But far be it for me to point out the inherent irony in this.
9:40 am
I’m glad its your delete finger that’s itchy…
9:44 am
The thing about “drinking the kool-aid” is that the famous kool-aid wasn’t one that made people delusional — they were already delusional — the kool-aid is just what killed them.
Which makes me think that “drinking the kool-aid” applies better to Republicans, opting for the suicidal combination of more tax cuts and war despite the visibly toxic effects of the two dixie cups they’ve already downed.
9:50 am
Besides, it was cyanide-laced Flavor Aid, not Kool-Aid, in the Jonestown incident.
9:51 am
The only people who are hurt by tax cuts are governmet employees … so I guess we all know what “self-interests” mean, huh?
9:55 am
yeah nevermind those people who rely on government programs for–nevermind, fuck it. you’re so deadset on your snippy little bullshit comments it doesn’t do any good to waste logical argument on you.
9:56 am
Link me to some statistics that demonstrate that “The only people who are hurt by tax cuts are governmet employees,” please. Try and make an argument instead of simply allowing foul-smelling smoke to pour out of your mouth. Certainly your supposedly superior education taught you how to make an argument? Didn’t it?
Didn’t it?
9:56 am
I’ll gladly pay you tuesday for a hamburger today!
9:58 am
You would think Whitey would be more civil. If there is one thing I learned from Leave it to Beaver, it’s that Whitey’s parents were pretty strict with him.
Actually, I think they abused him.
I always figured Lumpy Rutherford was the abused child. I mean – where else would those lumps come from?
9:59 am
I’m glad its your delete finger that’s itchy…
As opposed to his Kool-Aid-stirring finger?
9:59 am
I would greatly benefit from some tax cuts.
There, I said it.
10:01 am
I’d gladly pay you at some point in the future when I’m not on the hook for a fabulously expensive war today.
10:03 am
Wayne! “Stooge” is a little insulting.
10:03 am
Why do government employees necessarily deserve to get punished for low-paying jobs in public service, anyway?
10:04 am
CNN is reporting that Clinton campaign officials say she will concede tonight.
10:05 am
ok, maybe stooge is insulting
but seriously, a white upper-middle class man in the employ of the republican party talking up tax cuts?
what a shocker!
10:06 am
ps most of the time I’m not deliberately offensive, I just talk like this all the time and don’t realize it bothers people that much. I’m not one for political correctness.
10:08 am
Link me to some statistics that demonstrate that “The only people who are hurt by tax cuts are governmet employees,” please. Try and make an argument instead of simply allowing foul-smelling smoke to pour out of your mouth. Certainly your supposedly superior education taught you how to make an argument? Didn’t it?
Didn’t it?
Too bad we don’t have a moderator to delete these rude and abusive statements.
10:11 am
Don’t be mean to kevin, wayne. I could benefit from some tax cuts, too.
10:12 am
Why do government employees necessarily deserve to get punished for low-paying jobs in public service, anyway?
I wouldn’t call it punishment. I think when you sign on for a government job you’re agreeing to submit your pay to the tumult of the economy, via tax revenues. If that’s not suitable to your liking, go find a private sector job.
but seriously, a white upper-middle class man in the employ of the republican party talking up tax cuts?
Are you talking about me? I had to chuckle because, if so, only one of those three things is true.
10:13 am
Oh, touche. Yes. I insulted your argument, or lack thereof, and that’s EXACTLY THE SAME THING as insulting you.
You know something, Maz, I’ve had enough. Either you make real arguments, or I will actually delete your comments. No amount of asking, arguing, and bullying is making you behave like anything but a troll on this site, and it’s disruptive and worthless. You’ve had ample warning. Man up and start acting like a member of this community, or you simply won’t be a member of this community any more.
10:15 am
tee hee
10:16 am
I wouldn’t call it punishment. I think when you sign on for a government job you’re agreeing to submit your pay to the tumult of the economy, via tax revenues. If that’s not suitable to your liking, go find a private sector job.
Actually, the trade off has always been that you sign up for lower pay, but you get a somewhat better benefits package, and a bit more job security than the private sector.
It’s the private sector that you would get paid better, but submit yourself to the tumult of the marketplace.
10:18 am
I wouldn’t call it punishment. I think when you sign on for a government job you’re agreeing to submit your pay to the tumult of the economy, via tax revenues. If that’s not suitable to your liking, go find a private sector job.
Yeah, because private sector jobs are immune to whims of the economy.
10:18 am
right that’s what I was going to say. if the economy turns bad, your private sector job goes bye-bye. public sector jobs don’t just disappear like that.
10:21 am
I’d kill for the state’s PTO package, who cares about the pay.
10:22 am
Actually, the trade off has always been that you sign up for lower pay, but you get a somewhat better benefits package, and a bit more job security than the private sector.
It’s the private sector that you would get paid better, but submit yourself to the tumult of the marketplace.
That’s exactly right. In the public sector, the marketplace is replaced with the taxyaper’s ability to continue funding your job.
10:24 am
Looks like this thread has jumped the snark.
There are a few moments on MNspeak when we get ahead of the news cycle, and have some really good conversations. For awhile, this was one of those threads. It may yet come back (as they sometimes do) to something other than trading insults and zingers (although I LOLed at Kevin’s comment on Mrs. L), I thank those who took my request to discuss this topic seriously.
10:24 am
I’d kill for the state’s PTO package, who cares about the pay.
Power take off package? I can’t take off w/out clearing it w/my boss.
10:26 am
alie, we don’t have a PTO package, we have straight sick and vacation time.
You start with nothing and slowly build up vacation and sick, but are not allowed to take vacation for your first six months.
For your first five years you get 12 vacation days and 12 sick days. From 5-8 years, it goes up to 15 vacation days. That’s where I am now.
At least that is the MAPE and AFSCME contacts, which most state employees fall under.
10:26 am
but seriously, a white upper-middle class man in the employ of the republican party talking up tax cuts?
Are you talking about me? I had to chuckle because, if so, only one of those three things is true.
This has the making of a fun game?
Describe Kevin Correctly: PICK ONE only ONE!
White
Upper-Middle Class
Male
Employed by Republicans
10:28 am
And right, no time off without clearing it with your boss. And no funeral time, you have to take sick time. And some areas have been known to say “no one gets any time off during the legislative session” or “for these random 5 months because the project will be in full swing.”
And we get to be mocked and ridiculed by people like maz.
10:28 am
I don’t think Kevin is upper-middle class, but far be it for me to assume anything.
10:29 am
Oh come on you have to give more choices than that!
10:30 am
If I’m being mocked and ridiculed by someone like maz, then I know I’m succeeding at life.
10:31 am
Gay?
10:31 am
well he owns a condo in a nice building, so he’s doing alright.
10:32 am
balding?
10:33 am
Don’t be mean.
A wino?
10:34 am
Damn, well, color me wrong! Although, chin up Kevs and KC, if you stick it out for 25 years plus, you can build up about 6 months of sick and vacation time, like my mom. You do get all those fun random federal holidays off, though…
10:35 am
Diaper fetishist?
10:35 am
tranny?
10:35 am
Some of you are funny.
10:35 am
ick … vegan?
10:36 am
horticultural enthusiast?
10:36 am
Monet fan?
10:37 am
Oh, and don’t forget that you risk being temporarily laid off every two years if the budget isn’t decided on. Or that all of a sudden there’s a cut off on new hires and your department can’t get any new bodies even though a couple people have quit or retired, and now all this new work is put on your desk and there ain’t shit you can do about it.
10:39 am
sweet! sign me up!
10:39 am
(except bitch about it on MNSpeak because that is way more effective than anything else)
10:41 am
Smart?
Charming?
Witty?
Handsome?
10:42 am
Or, you have an “unclassified position” on a project with no funding and the Commissioner sends out an email with the word “layoffs” in it.
10:43 am
“Looks like this thread has jumped the snark.”
I wonder when exactly that happened, and how it corresponds to the arrival of a certain unnamed commenter….
10:46 am
if you stick it out for 25 years plus, you can build up about 6 months of sick and vacation time, like my mom.
We have to be below 250 hours at the end of each year.
Hey, wait a minute, does South Dakota have a Legislature?
(googles “south dakota” and “legislature)
IT DO!!!
In other SoDak news, Crazy Horse – it’s aaaaaaaaaaaalmost finished. To see its rapid progress, watch the live webcam!
10:49 am
Kev, seriously, if it’s finished in my lifetime it’ll be a miracle. I remember seeing it about 15 years ago and it was just a big hole in a rock.
10:50 am
I’m going to bring this back around to the original topic: Anyone know if they be selling beer at the X tonight?
10:52 am
The wikipedia article says it is “far from finished.”
What they’re doing is, I think, unsurpassed in history. They’re basically carving up an entire mountain over several generations. I think it’s one of the coolest art projects in the history of mankind.
10:53 am
“Concessions will be available for purchase.”
Doesn’t say what kind, though.
10:54 am
Anyone know if they be selling beer at the X tonight?
I doubt it. With so much time to wait until the main event, probably not a good idea. Have a few shots at the Liffy on your way in, if you must.
Also, offical denials from Camp Clinton.
10:59 am
The Clinton camp seems to be in quite a bit of disarray this morning bob, because other officials are saying that she will concede the nomination tonight.
Does anyone else remember back 6 or 7 months ago, when a certain commenter assured us that the Democratic primary race was a charade, and that the nomination would simply be handed to Hillary?
11:01 am
Even that story seemed to send two messages, one saying they wouldn’t admit defeat and the other saying they would acknowledge that Obama had the delegates to win.

Doesn’t say what kind, though.
Rival delegates?
11:04 am
So, to summarize: there will be concessions, but not beer or by Hillary.
11:05 am
One way I’ve heard it, is that she’s going to acknowledge he has the delegates, would concede and endorse, but wouldn’t actually suspend the campaign. The hope being that it would bring some pressure on Obama to address some of her issues (health care, VP, etc.).
11:06 am
I so rarely get to use my favorite trope, zeugma.
11:09 am
Joe Kimball at MinnPost offers this advice to those attending their first Obama rally.
11:10 am
Here’s a nice little minnpost article saying, “GET THERE EARLY.” I guess there are also two graduations tonight.
I think I’m going to head down there now for a lunch time walk to see if there is a line already.
11:11 am
Hex!
11:14 am
I need to go out for lunch, so I’ll swing by too and report what I see.
11:54 am
There were about a dozen people in line. But, it is sprinkling outside now, so I wonder how long they will last in the rain.
12:07 pm
Most had chairs and rain jackets, so I expect they are hard-core supporters, kc.
The area is already crawling with media types and television cameras. The locals, who know the turf, have their spots already at the Science Mueseum surface lot (where you can bounce a signal of the 1st Bank Building), others, like the Chigo-based WGN-TV, are lining the narrow road that splits off Kellog near the Eagle Bar & Grill.
12:20 pm
So, no sign of beer trucks, beer delivery people, Wally the Beer Man, anything that might indicate beer being sold?
I’m all about witnessing the beginning of the next chapter in American history. I just think someone should sell me beer while I wait for it.
12:22 pm
I think it’s BYOB.
12:38 pm
It sounds like KSTP-TV will begin live coverage of the rally at 8 p.m., and WCCO-AM will also broadcast Obama’s speech live. KARE-11 will carry the speech live streaming on their website.
No word yet if Jason’s Station or Blimp 9 will do live coverage.
Don’t forget MNspeak’s own chuck, on The UpTake.
12:45 pm
I’m fine with the alcohol, I just can’t imagine waiting outside for 7 hours, then inside for two to see it happen live.
I’ll be happy at home, embroidering, and maybe checking it out.
12:45 pm
ack. You mean I’m going to have to watch channel 5? (I’m assuming that no station would dare broadcast this without captioning).
Seeing that Hubbard is a McCain man, I also assume that he’ll order the captioner to insert some retro “black power” phrases into Obama’s speech.
12:47 pm
We’ll count on you to report back to us on that. MNSPEAK WILL BREAK THAT STORY.
12:49 pm
I don’t care if they’re giving away blowjobs and krugerands. I’m not waiting in line for 6 hours.
12:50 pm
KSTP-TV closed captioned
12:51 pm
For blowjobs and krugerands, I’d wait in line for 6 hours.
12:52 pm
Oops. Sorry.
12:53 pm
I’d wait in line for 6 hours for krugerrands OR a blow job.
12:55 pm
I would trade one for the other, and I’m not particular about which.
1:02 pm
I hope Obama is captioned as talking about sexy stuff.
1:05 pm
nothing beats sexy closed captioning.
1:06 pm
Apparently Snopes is infuriated by hotlinking.
1:07 pm
That’s not even hotlinking. GROW UP, SNOPES. Join Web 2.0!
1:07 pm
I thought that was just an urban myth.
1:10 pm
ok…here’s what I was attempting to link. file under sexy captioning.
1:12 pm
Ang wrote:If I’m being mocked and ridiculed by someone like maz, then I know I’m succeeding at life.
This reminds me, that last week maz wrote the following to me in regards to my first triathlon this last Sunday:
You’ll probably want a trophy just for finishing, right?
Nope. I got a medal. A cheap medal, but a medal nonetheless. And just for finishing. AND I didn’t drown! So basically, Ang – yes. If you’re being mocked by maz you’re doing well!
1:12 pm
Well, you’re going to need another metric.
1:14 pm
Will there be hopes and dreams provided or do you have to bring your own?
1:15 pm
Will there be hopes and dreams provided or do you have to bring your own
I snorted
1:15 pm
I suspect there may be people ejaculating in the street.
1:19 pm
as that closed captioner will tell you, there’s a very fine line between ejaculating and evacuating.
1:19 pm
I think it’s BYOBAMA.
fixed that for you.
1:20 pm
as that closed captioner will tell you, there’s a very fine line between ejaculating and evacuating.
I think I know that line.
1:26 pm
“Will there be hopes and dreams provided or do you have to bring your own?”
You better bring your own… and expect to have some black guy hassle you and ask you for change.
1:37 pm
I’m bringing my own hopes and dreams. They are all shattered, so they pack well in my purse.
p.s. I’m not really going tonight.
1:40 pm
You should have wrapped those dreams securely in bubble wrap. They don’t shatter if you do it carefully. Of course, they wouldn’t fit in a purse then.
1:42 pm
true story, max. in a summit on global warming, I heard Paul Douglas utter the phrase, “the warm taint of global climate change”.
I mashed up Douglas and John Lennon to come up with “happiness is a warm taint”
1:43 pm
You know, I’m sick of following my dreams, man. I’m just going to ask where they’re going and hook up with ‘em later
–Mitch Hedberg
1:50 pm
They may not sell beer, but they are hawking all kinds of stuff to the crowd outside the X right now. MPR has the story.
1:52 pm
I was going to go, but I decided it might be too crazy. Instead I am going to stay at home and finish my satiric por script for the week, Sex and the Titty.
1:57 pm
There goes the “Bunny Sparber for Senate” campaign…
Back on topic, the AP now reports that Obama has already passed the magic number, barring an unforseen blowout in Montanta and South Dakota.
1:57 pm
I suspect there may be people ejaculating in the street.
Good, I’ll finally be able to get rid of these 5,000 handtowels with Barack’s likeness screened on them.
2:06 pm
Ooooh, bootleg presidential garb. Now that sounds like a party.
2:08 pm
nothing beats sexy closed captioning.
That’s about the best I’ve seen. I have learned that some instant hot cocoa mixes contain powdered water, and that Indian cooking includes phlegm as an ingredient. And that DeRusha also apparently also answers to Jessica and Jennifer.
2:11 pm
And I think Mr. Hubbard was a Romney guy. Or Guilani, one of the two.
2:19 pm
Another tip for those attending the Obamagasm tonight.
2:28 pm
And I think Mr. Hubbard was a Romney guy. Or Guilani, one of the two.
But I believe he was listed as one of the event chairs for the upcoming McCain visit.
2:33 pm
Thanks for the humoroid, kevs.
2:41 pm
Seems Clinton is now okay with just being Veep.
2:42 pm
Now he’s obviously a McCain guy, but back before we said “Fuck it. McCain.” I don’t think he was.
2:45 pm
Seems Clinton is now okay with just being Veep.
Personally, I think I’d like to see her stay in the Senate as Majority Leader. Unchained from presidential politics, and representing NY, I think she could rank as one of the best.
2:48 pm
I don’t know why anyone would want to be VP rather than a US Senator. That job sucks. And it’s no sure thing that you’ll end up in the big chair in 8 years.
2:51 pm

1. Higher pay
2. Less work
3. The chance you can run the show, yet take much less of the heat.
Sounds like a plan to me.
2:52 pm
Unless you believe the consipracy theory that my brother throws around: Obama will be assassinated in his first year of presidency by a White Power group. Then being Veep is a good gig, I guess.
2:56 pm
That’s just crazy. White Supremacists love Obama!
But seriously, they don’t hate him.
2:57 pm
All Obabatrons please report to the Obamagasm.
Let’s all Hope (someone can spare some) Change.
3:06 pm
I’ll be in st paul tonight, but far from Obamagasm2k8.
3:56 pm
I just went past the xcel. Hundreds of people in lines that are over a block long. One of the lines actually crosses a street (seventh?). Police are starting to close down roads.
4:49 pm
That’s just crazy. White Supremacists love Obama!
Well, they do vote democrat.
5:12 pm
So many helicopters around here….agghhh. Is this what RNC is going to be like? Helicopter noise at all hours of the day?
5:13 pm
Well, they do vote democrat.
Not since Nixon invited them over.
