Krispy Kreme couldn’t hang in the TC and there aren’t any Dunkin Donuts bailed as well (which is a shame because they are giving away free donuts today in honor of Tax Day). I’m wondering where can I go to get my donut fix? I’m interested in donuts all over the TC but I often want donuts during the workday or before work, so donut places near downtown Mpls are especially welcome.
And, yes, I know the proper spelling is doughnut – you’re a jerk for feeling the need to point that out (and I know some of you wanted to).

I get mine at Cub Foods from their bakery.
1:43 pm
Sarah Jane’s Bakery on 29th and Johnson in lovely NE Mpls.
1:49 pm
Granny’s Donuts on Robert and Wentworth in West St Paul. Soooo good, and the owner isn’t shy to throw in a couple of freebies now and then.
1:56 pm
Forget donuts. What about pie?
Pie! Pie! Pie!
1:56 pm
I would kill for a piece of coconut cake right now….mmmm, coconut.
1:56 pm
Mickey’s Diner has good pie. 24 hours a day.
1:56 pm
Downtown! Where are the dougnuts downtown?!
1:57 pm
(Of COURSE I misspelled that on purpose!)
1:57 pm
They went to Heaven. With Lone Doughnut.
1:58 pm
The dougnuts at the Purple Onion are actually pretty tasty, but I’m a Baker’s Wife kinda guy…
2:00 pm
Donut Connection is the new overlord of franchised donut outlets. To me, I can’t tell the difference between Dunkin’ Donuts and Donut Connection’s creations.
2:01 pm
Screw donuts, let’s continue to develop Minneapolis and Saint Paul as cupcake towns.
2:06 pm
There’s a nice Donut Connection in Coon Rapids — you can wash it down with a quality cup of Joe from Dunn Bros., or a beer from the Shortstop Bar, both just across the street.
You can’t miss it — it’s right next to a closed branch library.

Long standing for a reason:
A Baker’s Wife.
Not a dunkin’ or a krispy by any means, but oh so much better.
2:11 pm
I concur on A Baker’s Wife. Went there for the first time a couple of months ago and had the Tea Cake. A thousand times better than those bricks called cinnamon rolls at most places.
2:13 pm
It is such a bummer that Dunkin doesn’t exist in MN. I do a search for stores on their website about every few months, just in case they decided to bless us with a D.D. What are we supposed to do? America runs on Dunkin.
Additionally, I think this might be like the 5th time I’ve lamented the lack of Dunkin on MnSpeak. Its one of the few topics I’ve been inspired to comment on.
Anyway, Baker’s Wife does a fine donut, but that’s pretty inconvenient for me and probably you.
I find myself buying Lund’s donuts mostly because its a convenient option. They are okay. Better than Kowalski’s
2:17 pm
Also, commercial bakeries, such as Cub, use a mix. While it ensures a consistant product, on the whole it makes a pretty tasteless donut…unless you like the taste of the vat frying grease.
You can make your own donuts at home, make up a batch and freeze them for a couple of weeks.

Ug, sorry about that double post. My browser is acting weird today. Time to restart.
2:27 pm
There’s gotta be doughnuts downtown… if not… it’s a pot of gold waiting to happen… seroiusly no doughnuts downtown?
Anyone? Anyone?
Bueller? Bueller?
2:30 pm
I agree that Sarah Jane’s is great! Very cheap, too. Awwww… I miss Dunkin’ Donuts.
They are seriously the best donuts ever. Minnesota is such a donut void.
2:41 pm
We used to get the best donuts for our team meetings downtown. They had awesome toppings on top of the frosting. I should email my old co-worker and see where ordered them.
2:46 pm
I’ll throw in my regular request for some place in the Twin Cities to sell bialys.
2:56 pm
Mel-O-Glaze in South Minneapolis is supposed to be really good. It’s on Minnehaha Parkway. So you can bike off the fat when you’re done!
Info here
3:04 pm
There’s a Cafe Donut on Central and 50th. Here’s the local LiveJournal archive on finding donuts in the city.
3:09 pm
I believe the donut place at Central and 50th used to be a Dunkin Donuts. It was also called Jelly & Beans for a while.
3:34 pm
@tinnie and @Jane:
Seriously, how *aren’t* there downtown donuts. The fact that there aren’t any donut shops downtown blew my mind. I got all giddy when Caribou started selling Krispy Kreme in the mornings but now that’s done. There’s a Bruegger’s, yet there are no donuts – it blows my mind.
We should open up a donut shop. If I had the money I’d totally invest in one downtown.
3:40 pm
Mpls Simpleton, please email your ex-colleague for donut info STAT.
3:41 pm
Dollars to donuts they were frome Lone Donut which went to the Donut Shop in the Sky.
3:45 pm
Bixby- I am so with you! I think you’ve got a great idea there. And don’t you dare do it without me!
We could totally get a small business loan, rent out a small counter in the skyway and wahla! Millions of dollars in our bank accounts! Think of all the office parties and suits in their breakfast meetings who need doughnuts to stifle their sad, soul-less, spirit sucking existences!
I knew doughnuts would be my path to riches.
3:47 pm
I used to live in Vienna and they opened up a Dunkin’ Donuts in Budapest back in, oh, 1999 or something. I actually took a train to Budapest *specifically* to get some donuts. There were billboards that had pictures of donuts that said “I am a donut”.
Good times.
That being said, I am partial to Wuollets or however it’s spelled. Much better than that crap that KKreme was dealing.
3:48 pm
I was just going to mention Wuollets, I think they still have a storefront on Hennepin.
3:55 pm

It’s a plan! However, I can only work during my lunch hour because I need to keep my job since I like having health care. Also, I don’t like getting up extra early. I get to work at 9am and that’s my limit.
Just to let you know.
But let’s do it, for reals!
3:56 pm
But Bix, even though you would start work at, oh, 3 am, you get done with work at 2 pm! Think of all the stuff you could do!
3:58 pm
Although, I used to work the 6 am to 3 pm shift at the bakery on Saturdays in college, and it sucked ass. Especially after a hard night of drinking.
4:04 pm
The dougnuts at the Purple Onion are actually pretty tasty, but I’m a Baker’s Wife
Actually, I’ve eaten Doug nuts many times and they’re just not that good.
4:08 pm
For south Mpls access to Cafe Donuts’ donuts (use same recipes from when they were a Dunkin Donuts), buy from Caffe Tempo on 42nd & Grand or Anodyne on 43rd & Nicollet. They both get their donuts from up in the NE.
4:08 pm
I have it on good authority Byerly’s makes the best donuts in town. Also, I’m told, the one’s at Super America are decent.
4:13 pm
I think that the Nokomis/Standish Ericson area is the donut triangle – Baker’s Wife at 42nd and 28th ave to Melo-Glaze at the parkway and 28th ave to Scandia at 50th and 34th ave. Hard to avoid a donut as good as those three offer.
4:23 pm
the one’s at Super America are decent.
*recoils in horror*
The only way I would eat those would be at 3:00 a.m. after coming home from First Ave.
4:25 pm
Bixby: excellent.
Now, whose going to put up the capital for us?
Anyone wanna part with a cool $100,000 for our doughnut venture?
4:31 pm
Will you allow smoking in the shop? No? Oh well, donuts are bad for you anyway.
5:29 pm
But Bix, even though you would start work at, oh, 3 am, you get done with work at 2 pm! Think of all the stuff you could do!
I’m nothing without my health insurance.
Will you allow smoking in the shop? No? Oh well, donuts are bad for you anyway.
Yes. We will have a smoking shed in front of the building in which our donut shop is located. And our building will have a door which you may stand right next to while you smoke. Even though you’re not supposed to. We wouldn’t know if you were because we’ll be too busy making donuts.
I have it on good authority Byerly’s makes the best donuts in town.
They are really good. In fact, we will be reselling them at our donut shop, Doughn’t Go There, which is located in the back of my car until we get some investors.
7:58 pm
Krispy Kremes were only OK. I yet to have a Yankee donut to rival the Southern Maid donuts… so good Elvis Presley himself once did his first and only commercial for them. And if anyone knew donuts, it was Elvis Presley.
8:14 pm
=Lunch, Scandia Bake Shop serves up some of the best baked goods I’ve had anywhere.
8:48 pm
me and my man have said so many times that there HAS to be a donut option downtown. Think of all the possibilities! The late night drunks, the business suits, people sick of the gooey coffee drinks and ready for some good ole’ black joe, not to mention all those GOP folks who will be invading our fair city in a few months. DONUTS FOR DOWNTOWN!!
9:45 pm
So depressing. I have a love hate thing with this city and the lack of a Dunkin is one of the top 3 reasons that I hate this town. I’ve lived in 4 cities in my life and all but one, this one, have had a Dunkin Donuts within 4 blocks of my home. I miss it. *tearing up* It’s not just the donuts, but the good bad coffee, presugared and milked, and the micro’ed egg on a bagel. I need a Dunkin support group.
10:03 pm
Granny’s Donuts in West St. Paul on Robert Street is definitely worth a visit. Doesn’t meet your downtown requirement, but it’s not bad from St. Paul–a straight shot down Robert.
10:09 pm
Mama’s Pizza in the US Bank building on Nicollet Ave sells doughnuts – they are on par with the average grocery store doughnut. Not great, but good enough if you need a fix downtown.
There are 3 outstanding, old school doughnut joints in the NW. Valley Pastries (169/Medicine Lk Road), Osseo Bakery (downtown Osseo), and Hans Bakery (downtown Anoka). All doughnut enthusiasts should make the drive to these locales.
10:13 pm
I need a Dunkin support group.
You’re sad.
Man up. It’s a donut forgodsake. You’ll do better without it.
11:03 pm
Donuts coat your mouth with a film of ? (fry grease?) and leave you with a lump of goo that travels slowly through your digestive system, leaving fat to deposit on your hips, stomach, and thighs along the way. Ish.
Donuts blow.
7:09 am
Used to eat those little donut holes people often call “fat globules” before I gained some sense.
7:55 am
After recently picking up some Dunkin’ Coffee at SuperTarget… I began dreaming of the day when Target would drop those silly Starbucks and add a DD. America Runs on Dunkin’ and we’re starting to slide… our economy would be totally better if we all had Dunkin’ – just ask their marketing people – they’ll tell you.
8:28 am
Hatesdonuts is right, those little pastries are fried in a mixture of vegitable oil and lard (the good ones are anyway), as are most of the fried pastries you would get at a bakery and if not drained properly can leave the taste of the fryer in your mouth. But really, are we going to bakeries for the health benefits? A donut once in a while won’t kill you and people would probably save calories if they substituted the giant Mocha they’re drinking right now for a large black coffee and a glazed old fashioned.
8:36 am
Fried are still slightly less bad for you than the traditional cake doughnut, where the fats are incorporated into the dough.
8:38 am
Not to mention the baked pastries (croissants, etc) which are chock full of butter.
8:42 am
Alie, you health nut, you! Are you suggesting a Fried Pastry Ban?!?
The Freedom From Lard Bill will now be introduced by Senator Aliecat.
What say you, MNspeak?
8:43 am
On the contrary, Bob. I propose a return to lard which is probably better for you than all those hydrogenated oils and transfats.
Although, I’m drinking a soy latte right now as a nod to you.
8:49 am
Okay. Although I’m not sure lard is better than the other nasty oils.
The Minnesota Soybean Growers Association (full disclosure, a Clean Air Choice Team partner) thank you, but I never could aquire a taste for that faux milk made from soybeans. My wife likes it, though.
9:00 am
Lard is just rendered pork fat, and as far as I remember, all natural…not that you’d want to eat it in everything, but it’s better than hydrgenated oils, IMO.
I only like soy mild in coffee.
9:09 am
Lard is just rendered pork fat, and as far as I remember, all natural
So is arsenic, hemlock and tobacco. Nature can be a very bad Mom sometimes.
9:38 am
BTW, DD requires franchise owners to purchase five (count ‘em 5) franchise locations at a time and a financial exceeding 7-figures. All that seems a bit much for want of a downtown donut location (and yes, I spelled it that way on purpose).
9:48 am
Okay. Although I’m not sure lard is better than the other nasty oils.
While I probably wouldn’t say “better” the saturated fats are less bad than trans fats. The main difference is that while both kinds increase your cholesterol, saturated fats will raise your HDL levels, while trans fats actually can decrease your HDL while raising your LDLs. So, while both have a net negative impact, saturated fats is less negative.
Unsaturated fats, though can raise your HDLs, while lowering your LDLs.

11:26 am
@alexis:
Nice.
6:37 pm
OMG! Dunkin’ Donuts does exist in Minnesota! On Central and 46th-ish in Columbia Heights there’s a donut place called Donut Time/ Depot? that sells real Dunkin’ Dounuts! This is the best day ever…
6:47 pm
The Freedom From Lard Bill
In the not-so-distant-future.
6:53 pm
The Freedom From Lard Bill? Been there, done that! (See pg. 40 lines 27-28)
You guys are so out of touch.
6:58 pm
I remember when we were all slaves to Lard Bill. Man, was he mean.
7:13 pm
Lard is just rendered pork fat
So what you’re saying is that when I eat my chocolate covered, custard filled delicious pastry I am actually eating bacon.
8:07 pm
You would be in a sort of offhand way, mb21, as bacon drippings are also rendered pork fat and used to flavor all sorts of things! The main diff is that Lard is not cured.
BTW, I’m heavily in favor of bringing back the use of lard in pie crusts and the use of shortening for baking cookies. If you’re gonna eat sweets, may as well go all the way, ya know?
