There is a new restaurant across the street from La Bodega (which used to be Liola and then they switched back to La Bodega, when did this happen??). Anyhoo. It’s in the same space that that wine bar used to be. There is a sign out front with a picture of a boat. The name of the restaurant starts with an “A”. This is all I know, yet I am intruiged. Does anyone have any more info on this new place?

Aronos- We just went there yesterday. It’s Mediterranean, Greek inspired food. It was okay. The food wasn’t spectacular but they did “no-frills” food very well. It just wouldn’t be a place I would rave about and say I needed to go to again in a hurry. Wine list wasn’t large but had some good selections.

From my passings-by on the 53, the name of the place appears to be Arona’s (not to be confused with one or more St. Paul establishments with “aroma” in their name). A quick googling turns up a since-disappeared classified listing on the Strib, dated 3/31: “Aronas, opening soon on Lake & Lyndale, now Hiring Servers. 612-823-0156.”

Aww, that’s too bad ms. amy. However, they are new, and perhaps they need some more time? I just really like their cute boat picture out front. It pleases me.

I haven’t been since they reopened, but the space was very pleasant when it was Vino 610.
Rick Nelson says:
In Lyn-Lake, Aronas Restaurant (610 W. Lake St.) is open for business — just in time for the next round of the seemingly interminable Lake Street reconstruction project — in the charming storefront that was briefly home to Vino 610. Menu items include pan-fried soft-shell crabs with a walnut-garlic sauce, broiled prawns with steamed greens, a short list of beef, lamb and pork cuts and a daily fish special, along with beer and wine. Top price is $18.

I got so sick of explaining to customers (and the Star Trib, when the owner couldn’t be bothered to call back) that Liola was just what the remodeled lounge of la bodega was called. The owner tried to have different food in there but that ended after a day when the customers got upset they couldn’t have their tapas. The place is a pit, and the owner is a felon. The only reason I didn’t report him is that I like his wife and they have two children. In addition, the food is pretty awful. The reason the service was/is always awful is that he hires and fires for petty reasons – when i was hired EVERY SINGLE waitress there had long dark wavy hair. and his wife, too. I was almost fired when I broke a glass. No, I am not kidding.
He’s a horrible human being that regularly bilked his employees out of their paychecks.
Wow, i feel better with that off my chest.

4rlz.
11:05 am
I don’t know, Wayne, IGTM is pretty good, comparable to what you would get in Greece, which is how I judge a greek restaurant.
11:07 am
all the greek people I know have a clear preference and I agree with them.
11:08 am
Well, I’ve never been to Gardens, but IGTM is pretty darn good and there’s actually greek people eating there, so it can’t be that horrible.
11:09 am
I never said it was horrible, I’m just spoiled by the best in town being two blocks away.
11:15 am
Let’s fight about it Wayne…
11:15 am
that’s not fair, you have a very high tolerance for pain and I have an extremely low one
