Krispy Kremes were way too sweet for my liking (and my kids). Duncan Donuts were far better, but difficult to find. My real favorite was Mister Donut–there was one in Robbinsdale at Highway 100 and 36th Street North that I used to stop at on my way to work in the early ’80’s. I guess Mister Donut is no longer around.

When I was living in Morris Park I was very happy with Scandia Bake Shop. I’ve never actually been to a Krispy Kreme since I actively avoid businesses who market themselves through press releases as a form of free advertizing, but the Krispy Kremes people bring into work never impressed.

Yeah, Krispy Kremes. I loved ‘em back in Kentucky, but I was sure as shit not going to drive all the way out to Maple Grove to get one.

there was an incredibly high concentration of sober house residents when I worked on toward the eastern end of Grand Ave around the turn of the milennium. It’s like there was a pipeline (or perhaps a revolving door) from Hazelden to Crocus Hill and back again.

I remember when that KK opened up in Maple Grove. Local police were directing traffic around that place on weekends. It was crazy.

RE: Krispy Kreme… don’t let the door hit you on the way out. Maybe people will rediscover how a good doughnut tastes. I never understood why people were so krazy about those things. I’d hear the excuse that you have to get them while they’re hot, but fry fat and dough and anything will taste good hot. All fluff, no substance.

So, where’s you’re favorite place to get doughnuts. Personally, I’m partial to Wyolett’s but really only because so few places make a good old-fashioned. Crispy on the outside, spicy, dense and soft on the inside. Mmmm.

I was wondering what happened to that Muskie.

That is a big fish. Too many donuts.

Glazed Muskie?

Been glazed and confused for so long its not true,
Wanted a muskie, never bargained for you.
Lots of people talk and few of them know,
Soul of a donut was created below. yeah!

Next week I hope Saloth leaves us with a soup recipe requiring muskie and glazed donuts.

What happened in May that caused muskies to briefly overtake donuts in popularity?

Breeding season. Sometimes you’re the muskie, sometimes you’re the donut hole.

I’m so glad I don’t work at donuts.com. I couldn’t handle that roller coaster ride. One month you’re up, the next you’re down. You could never settle into your donut groove.

Well, there are other reasons I’m glad I don’t work at donuts.com.

I loved Krispy Kreme donuts, although they were only a very occasional treat. I wish teh Kare 11 story actually had some more depth to it. Any depth at all, really

just sayin’:

WCCO actually has a story & video about the Krispy Kreme closing. It seems like KARE 11 rarely posts their actual stories, but instead gives us random raw video coverage.

Depth?! They had a tiny picture, isn’t that deep enough for you? Oh wait, you mean you want some analysis or something that actually requires a modicum of thought? Well, I guess Kare 11 won’t do. Maybe Krispy Kreme will put out a press release.

“Krispy Kreme leaves Minnesota with no fanfare! Cars do not line up around the block!”

PS Sorry this is kind of a lame post but now that I’ve written it I might as well post the stupid things. Someone post something more clever. I’ve let you all down.

I would really like an in-depth look at the socio-economic factors that led to this.

What do we really talk about when we talk about doughnuts?

This is a terrible event for those who need easy access to publicly viewable glazing machines.

Yes, it seems that the Twin Cities are just not a donut-loving community. I noticed that there are donut shops all over the place in the Boston area, but hardly any around here. Seems like they used to be much bigger in the early- to mid-80s. I think when bagels suddenly hit the mainstream in the late 80s/early 90s, it was at the expense of donuts, which is too bad, because they each have their own place.

At my high school, we had donuts every Friday in home room (every kid had to take their turn bringing them in) and you had quite a few choices as to where to get them back then. There was a place in a strip mall (I think it was called “Lamplighter Square”?) over on Douglas and Medicine Lake Road in New Hope that was good — can’t remember what it was called.

Aleshire, I remember the Mister Donut in Robbinsdale, too. It was right next to Meilke Field, where my high school had its football games, so we’d always get a bag to bring in and munch while we were watching our school lose to someone. Donuts make everything better.

As convenience store doughnuts go, I have to say that the caramel Persians at SA are mighty damn tasty. But I’m a pushover for cinnamon-flavored sticky sweetness.

Chocolate cake donut at Wuollet’s on Hennepin, mmm! My first job was at a donut store in California. Only donuts and coffee. 12 cents a donut.

Good riddings to Krispy Kremes. I won’t miss them at all. Their donuts were never that good. I’ll take a good donut from Super America or Cub Foods any day before I’d go to Krispy Kremes. That donut shop that someone talks about in Lamplighter Square in Crystal is still there and it has very good donuts. They have some other bakery things has well. You won’t be missed much here in the twin cities. True donut lovers know where to get the best and it never was Krispy Kreme.

Fat globules, all of them.
