I read this article in the Downtown Journal about Twin City Transplants while waiting at the pharmacy in the Medical Arts building. Since I’m not much of a joiner (unless it’s art club!), I was wondering if other transplants thought it sounded cool. Or lame. Your thoughts?

I wouldn’t necessarily have been inclined to join something like this when I moved here. I found the best way to ingratitate yourself was to just go out a lot and talk to a lot of people until you met other transplants. I mean, they’re everywhere. Every third person you meet is from South Dakota or International Falls or Green Bay or somewhere.
Actually, this Sunday’s the third anniversary of my relocation, which means I’ll be going to Matt’s to have a Jucy, as I did my first night in town.
4:48 pm
I went to one of their meet and greet things when I first moved here. Nice people, but, honestly, it seemed like the scene from Animal House at the cool frat where they keep pushing Pinto and Bluto to the dorky group of pledges.
There’s another group that does the same kind of thing called meetinminneapolis.com and I went to a couple of their things. They seem to do more events. I really just felt, though, that I could make my own friends so didn’t go to many things either groups promoted.

I can’t join because I’m not “college-educated” as they define a professional. Not that I would want to anyways.
No really, I’m not going to cry about it or anything. I’m probably too uneducated to realize I feel insulted.
5:06 pm
I have fully assimilated and as such I really don’t like the idea of any more new people moving here, so I’m out.
5:19 pm
Actually, I think MnSpeak gatherings are more fun and inclusive…even if you’re a reclusive Republican…/Kevin…
5:19 pm
I’ve agreed with grote twice this week. Weird.
5:26 pm
Speaking of MnSpeak get togethers… what happened to the Texa-Tonka bowling idea? We were all gung-ho about it a couple of weeks ago.

Except, does any one actually go to them? I went to the last one (that I know of), and there were on;y 3 other people there.
I’ve looked in to a couple of similar groups, off and on. One told me they were for “professionals,” and that even with a MS, I didn’t meet that because of my job.
Another had an organizer that actively discouraged me from joining because of my hearing impairment. That one was actually a bicycling group, and the person tried to claim I would be a safety hazard on group rides.
5:34 pm
mnblrmkr- lots of people came to the KosherFest and DeRusha’s bday was sort of a mnspeak thing. Seems like if there’s free food available, people come out in droves. Speaking of, I’m having a hotdish party in February, if anyone else is interested.

Because, obviously, if you can’t hear, you also can’t see either, right? Right? Stupid people suck.
6:51 pm
I don’t like those type of groups and I really don’t like the people who start them. I’d rather just go out and meet people the old fashioned way- at bars. But that’s just me.
7:49 pm
I meet people the old fashioned way too. I pay them for sex.
8:34 pm
I knew you looked familiar…
10:31 pm
I would totally be into a Texa-Tonka bowling thing!
Ditto a hotdish party. The only kind I know how to make is tater tot hotdish.
Will try again for MNspeak yoga in SLP Saturday morning.
(WHY does a helicopter KEEP flying over my house this evening? Am I on the news? There it goes again!)
10:33 pm
Jane, I sent you the e-vite. If you don’t want to make a hotdish, you can always do a jello or noodle salad if you like. Or bundt cake…mmm…bundt cake…
10:45 pm
Cool, will check out the evite.
And I heard ANOTHER helicopter fly over me a few minutes ago.
Wait… no way, here comes another one! W.T.F.

I (probably) need to meet someone new, and a whole lot of caucus attendees, too!
I want to invite you to a pre-caucus event with a vegetarian buffet and a mango lassi. Let’s talk about what to do with this political season (caucuses and conventions) now that all of the true progressives have dropped out of the presidential contest… should we cast ballots for “UNCOMMITTED” and try to send “Peace First!” delegates to the Democratic National Convention? Should we continue to pursue the impeachment of Vice President Richard Cheney during a presidential election? Would you submit my resolutions when you caucus, and consider becoming a delegate or alternate for me or another Peace First! candidate?
A resolution that I would like to see adopted to the Action Agenda would call on the Democratic Party to seek to meet the commitments made to the people of Aceh after the Dec 26th, 2004 tsunami by former president Bill Clinton – that we would rebuild Aceh better than it was. We need to commit resources to habitat conservation, peace-building, developing fair trade connections for smallholders of agroforestry crops like rubber, and reforestation using native Sumatran forest trees. We need to respect the terms of the peace deal there, try to preserve Acehnese languages, cultural knowledge, and yet ease their transition into a direct relationship with the modern world and global commerce. We need congress to assert that the 1999 ban on arms sale to Indonesia will remain in force as long as there is any chance this conflict, or other internal wars in the archipelago, could flare up again.
We also need to seek global controls on the trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons, and cut of the flow of ammunition into places like Somalia, the Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Iraq, after our speedy withdrawal.
Suggested contribution is $25 (cash is best, but you can write checks or use plastic to pay some portion of the event costs directly to India House ) but I won’t turn anyone away who can’t pay full price. I want to meet you before we caucus! If we fall in love (or even back in love) you eat for free!
Beyond one mango lassi, you are responsible to pay for your own drinks.

4:30 – 6 PM Tuesday, February 5th – just before caucus!

The Rat likes red meat with his politics.
7:07 am
Jane, I heard the helicopters last night too. Kind of weird.
8:12 am
Is it a black helicopter?
8:34 am
Is it easier or harder for a helicopter to fly when its cold versus really hot and humid?
8:47 am
Harder….
Altitude matters more. More dense air is easier to push with the rotors.
Someday I want a few helicopters and a serious boat I’ll crew with busty internet models and their close look-a-likes. We we will sail the old world tropical seas, the Indian Ocean, and respond to natural disasters, famine, and strife with credible, yet scantily-clothed, humanitarian assistance. I will call it BustyReliefTM
That is the only reason I know anything about helicopters, really. That and a book by a Vietnam war vet and Army aviator, Robert Mason, called “Chickenhawk”. Good read.
You can crawl in and out of those things without understanding how they work. Really, it is best if you don’t.
8:51 am
did the strib print the color of the helicopter!?!!
8:51 am
I am not the joining type, and most of these groups sound pretty pretentious and/or uninviting anyway (just like real minnesotans! ha, the irony).

As long as they’re “professionals” then it’s so totally ok.
9:02 am
Max, just take them on as interns and you don’t have to pay them at all!
9:19 am
I have flown in a number of Army rotory-wing aircraft, including the vernurable Huey, the odd Chinook, the wicked Blackhawk and the tiny Kiowa scout helicopter.
9:45 am
Bob- were you buzzing SLP last night??
Maybe it was the wind whistling through your stache that Jane and I heard.
9:46 am
I think our Friend, Friend is a bit of a throwback to another era. He engages in the time-honored tradition of Political Activism in Order to Meet Women.
Not that I see anything wrong with that…
10:02 am
Mrs L and I have a friend in SLP, so we visit often, but no, I was dog-tired and went to bed at 8 p.m. last night. Mr. Excitement.

FWIW, I also dance to meet women, travel to meet women, have even used the internet women. I love’em lots!
