the cold is annoying, but I'm still out walking around in it

and in the summer I refuse to buy an AC. It's such a waste of energy. I just have a couple fans that I run when I'm home, but I'm not even home that much when the weather's nice.

That doesn't make it any easier to breath outside when its cold and humidity is extremely low. I'd like to find any case where the interior humidity approaches what it is when its -10 F outside. It's nice research but extremely unusable in practical application. It just never gets as dry inside as it does outside.

The NY Times article linked to earlier says the danger is from the dryness of the air, not it's temperature. Cold air doesn't hold much moisture, which is why it seems that it's the temperature that induces the symptoms.

Volunteers with exercise-induced asthma, whose airways tended to narrow after exercise in the cold, breathed cold air or room temperature air that was equally dry. Their airways narrowed in response to the dryness of the air, not its temperature, Dr. Rundell said.

Actually for some people with Sports Related Asthma execising when it's cold can cause some serious issues if you don't prepare!

This (and other) conversation(s) aside, I just watched Vlado's BWCA slideshow and it made me extremely nostalgic... Nice photography, Vlad!

(And adorable, photogenic doggy.)

Yes, the BWCA is an amazing place. Pristine nature at its best. One of Minnesota's true treasures.

I was able to get up there for four days this winter. If I had more time, I'd love to go on a winter camping trip there for 5-6 days.

Imagine winter there, 0 people, complete isolation, pristine snow only disturbed by animal tracks. The stars at night...

Anyway.

I despise February. Why does the shortest month feel like the longest?

The only time The Rat feels really cold and can't stand Minnesota is in April.

That's a cruel month. Wind, damp cold, grey and endless pissy rain.

I'm a native Minnesotan and I hate the cold.

Today is the one of the two or three days I have every year when I genuinely and truly miss living in Los Angeles - or, rather, I wish fervently I had enjoyed living there as to avoid having the tears from my watering eyes freeze on my eyelashes. This kind of cold is just messed up.
