That’s why I made the comment. Every plan I’ve participated in, general health products such as cold medicines, aspirin, vitamins, toothpaste, etc. are excluded.

The wording is usually along the lines of that it has to be for a specific, diagnosable condition.

A Dr. might be able to “prescribe” an OTC and get it allowed, for example a person at risk for heart attacks or strokes whose Dr. recommends aspirin.

AND, you are only allowed to “stockpile a “reasonable” quantity, usually 30-60 day supply.

There are a lot of OTC medications that can be bought with flex plan dollars. Just read the fine print or call your administrator.

Target and some other retailers now break out the Health Care Items at the bottom of the receipt. Makes it fairly simple to keep track.

Just don’t tell HR that you are returning all that contact solution with a gift receipt for cash. That is against the law.

There seems to be some errors in the article though. I’ve never seen plan that you can use to buy aspirin or other general health related products.

And one flip side I’ve experienced to the use it or lose it is that if you are laid off, and you’ve spent more in the account than has been withheld at that point, you don’t have to pay back the difference.
