The end of an era

TWas inevitable, no?

So who is the most senior writer there now? Paul Demko?

ANd who’s after Demko? Some 19-year-old kid?

I absolutely love Dara’s writing, but she’s a better fit for a magazine, isn’t she? She’s only marginally reviewing restaurants (note the recent work on cheese and chocolate)… so perhaps its time for new blood at CP.

Man, I’d love to be a restaurant reviewer.

19 year old kid = the new editor? oooh snap

seriously though, this was my only reason to pick up a city pages any more and it is now gone.

Max and I were chatting about this hidden tidbit early this evening:

Grumdahl was complimentary about her former employers, praising publisher Mark Bartel”a friend”and soon-to-be-former editor Kevin Hoffman. “I never had a problem with him,” she says of Hoffman, who has had a few writers screaming for the exits. “He’s a gung-ho writer and a nice guy. It’s not about that.”

Kevin Hoffman is “soon-to-be-former editor”? News to me.

The Queen is dead. Long live the Queen. Sorry to see you go Dara and best wishes.

“soon-to-be-former editor” just means that she is still technically a City Pages employee, and so Hoffman is still her boss.

I love her reviews, but sometimes, as is the fashion with CP writers, she gets a little wordy…but I’ll be sorry to see her go…

I’m sorry she’ll only be writing once a month now.

I think it’s good that she’s writing once a month. She can get more in depth, and her pieces were starting to sound like rehashes every week.

No offense, but I hate the way MNPost puts cheesy drawings of its writers in the sidebar.

I think removing the pressure of writing a weekly column could be good for her career. Maybe she could put longer pieces in the national press, or write a book. I like her writing and she always seems so nice too. Good luck to her.

I am the only one who likes my drawing because it smooths out some of my topographically rich facial features. However, a friend recently wrote that I look like I’m being pelted with racquetballs about the face and neck as it was being sketched.

And thanks for the assist, JJ – I did indeed mean that Hoffman would soon be Dara’s former editor, not that Kevin is going anywhere. If anyone knows something I don’t, I’m always open for tips.

everyone moves on at some point.

dara is very talented and deserves a chance to advance her career. MM won’t be her last stop.

with that said, absolutely no-one is irreplaceable. certainly, a part of her appeal was the platform.

the new kid will do fine. still prob one of the best jobs in the TC.

City Pages is a pale shadow of its former self. Sad and pathetic. When 89.3 The Current DJ Chris Roberts had CP “music editor” Sarah Askari on his Local Show a couple weeks ago to discuss the best local releases of the fall (Chris had been in Germany from August to November and was trying to “catch up” on what he missed, and each critic invited on the show got to pick out 3 songs), Sarah chose Little Man’s “Soulful Automatic” – which came out last spring! When Chris was still living right here in the U S of A. Way to “catch him up on the latest,” Sarah!

Then Sarah chose the Dan Wilson song where Sheryl Crow sings backup.

Way to have your finger on the pulse of the local scene. After all, Sheryl Crow definitely needs the exposure on a Twin Cities local music show.

Dara’s leaving is just one more nail in the coffin of a once-respectable publication.

For me, I’ll have no reason to read City Pages anymore, but I’m now really glad I renewed my donation to MPR so I can get Minnesota Monthly.

Man, I’d love to be a restaurant reviewer.

Would a resaurant review segment be do-able on TV news? I suppose the eateries wouldn’t be too keen on camera crews showing up, plus you wouldn’t be too anonymous. But maybe you could use a hidden camera. It would be something I’d like to see.

“soon-to-be-former editor” just means that she is still technically a City Pages employee, and so Hoffman is still her boss.

But they didn’t say that about publisher Bartel, who was listed first. Mildly confusing to me, at least.

“You know who should be afraid?” Grumdahl asks rhetorically. “Mpls.St.Paul.”

Of some overrated commie chick who knows her way around (and around, and around) an adjective? I mean, afraid? We’re not organic chicken, d.

Bring it.

Over stuffed monthly throw-down!

Mpls, St. Paul rumoured to be courting “Withering Glance’.

It’s a very exciting time. Very exciting.

Bud, you seem mildly obsessed with the boys from Withering Glance. Just saying.

Of some overrated commie chick who knows her way around (and around, and around) an adjective?

lol.

Mild like a hot tamale! Bud has a serious case of Withering Glancitis!

I get all my grooming and gay dating advice from Withering Glance.

Don’t you mean “Withering Glansitis,” Mpls Simpleton?

Oh, that was SO bad.

Those glans are anything but withering!

Too bad the column isn’t Turgid Glance.

Withering Glands!

lol

My “fascination” if you will, is that a “major metropolitan daily” prints it.

It’s a warmed over Savage Love for the masses, brought to you by Avista Capital Partners.

It easily offsets any of Nancy Barnes’ earnest hand-wringing about “journalism”.

Happy Holidays!

Is there a more “Minnesota” name than “Grumdahl”?

Kellior?

Andersen FTW.

Exactly. Top of our masthead? Brian…wait for it…Anderson. We’re holding that corner down.

Withering Glands!

Bud didn’t get the joke. Glans has a quite different meaning from Glands.

He also seems to think Withering Glance is an advice column.

I know exactly what it is.

Starts with t and rhymes with bird.

Textured?

Poor, hapless bud.

For me, I’ll have no reason to read City Pages anymore, but I’m now really glad I renewed my donation to MPR so I can get Minnesota Monthly.

What?? not picking it up for “Free Will Astrology?”…umm..me neither.

FYI — you can “opt in” to get a subscription to Minnesota Monthly with your MPR membership but you don’t have to be an MPR member to get the publication

Steve Marsh obviously covets the third byline on “Withering Glans”.

Dude, I would mop the free-range artisanal tile with those old queens.

Or should I say, artiANAL?

Jeez. Somebody send this audition tape to Rick.

stevemarsh Dec 19 2007
4:04 pm

I meant artisANAL. Clearly.

I’m just happy when bud takes a few minutes off from complaining about black people to complain about homosexuals. It’s nice to see a little variety once in a while.

are we still talking about dara?

Bud’s hate is not bound by your simple categorizations.

stevemarsh Dec 19 2007
4:14 pm

I like black people more than homosexuals too, you know, generally.

Max, don’t forget about his love of Mexicans too.

I’m ending the hijacking of this thread. Odds on Dara outing herself and having her REAL photo accompanying her byline @ MMM are set @ even.

stevemarsh Dec 19 2007

I’ll put $20 on a photo.

marsh has insider info. I’m moving the line to 3-to-1 in favor.

Now where in the world is the “hate”?

My “fascination” if you will, is that a “major metropolitan daily” prints it.

It’s a warmed over Savage Love for the masses, brought to you by Avista Capital Partners.

It easily offsets any of Nancy Barnes’ earnest hand-wringing about “journalism”.

bud…nice try, but you can’t counter a life’s work with a single pull quote. BLNT.

The “hate” obviously comes from those who project their own emotions unto others.

A typical liberals response. Attack those whose message they can not refute with accusations of emotions they themselves own.

BLNT?

Attack those whose message they can not refute with accusations of emotions they themselves own.

This pathology knows no political inclination.

Quit being a dental dam.

better luck next time, you little victim.

and just for the record, your assailants are mostly white.

What truly fascinates me are the sharp curves that some MNspeak threads take.

Mpls Simpleton Dec 20 2007

Any thread will take an unforeseen detour when Bud’s homosexual fascination crops up.

Dude, that was a total overshare.
