Thanks for the advice. The roads are pretty tough down in South Florida, I generally try to avoid the whole place. Whenever I'm visiting my folks I'm always struck by just how shitty and impatient people can be. Glad to hear its not like that up there, especially when I will be driving so slow that I feel like an asshole (at least I'll be in the right lane!)

Depends on where you live. If you're living in the Twin Cities, there's not much to worry about. The streets are well-traveled and aren't that icy just snowy once in awhile. I helped push a couple people out last year.

If your going to be in rural areas and drive a lot of two-lane traffic that's a different story.

We have a Subaru Forester. Good car for winter

I've heard stories about driving in Miami- it's gotta be safer than that.

Lived there for a year and a half. I'd rather drive through the worst blizzard than there. Miami drivers don't give a damn about you. They obey the driving rules from their country of origin.

I'd say if you're really worried and want to stay away from 4WD, get a front wheel drive car that has some heft to it. I drove a rear wheel for years and rarely had problems...trick is to speed up just a little before you hit the drift. And, as someone just said, 4WD won't mean shit on ice.

SUVs are more trouble than they're worth. Get a Subaru- cheap(ish), hearty, and they are the best in snow. All vehicles suck on ice. Drive very, very slowly when you are acclimating to driving on snow and ice. When you feel like an asshole for driving so slow, you're going the right speed. Invest in a really good window scraper (before it snows) and keep extra windshield wiper fluid in the car. After a while, you'll get the hang of it. I've heard stories about driving in Miami- it's gotta be safer than that.
Buy a real four wheel drive like a Jeep Cherokee or Chevy Trail Blazer if you are inexperianced and worried about getting stuck. Some Minnesotans still drive rear wheel drive cars with two wheel drive. They are fine most of the time if you know how to drive in the snow and have snow tires on the rear in the winter. If not buy a smaller front wheel drive or four wheel drive SUV,
