I think there are few things in life that set people off in quite the same way as asking them to turn down music. For many it must be like you insulted their mother.
Or maybe for them it’s worse. You’ve insulted their favorite rock band. By extension, you’ve insulted their taste in music.

That music story is why I always just call the cops.
11:07 am
that guy brought his 13 year old daughter with? dumb?
11:25 am
Baker: he was probably not expecting to get assaulted. Although I take your point – if there’s any chance of an altercation, it’s probably better that your kid isn’t there to see it.
It’s a cliche to describe many forms of violence as senseless, but this is a particularly dumb example. Because these men chose to assault this guy, their party ended early and with the police out searching for them. If they knew the host, the chances are they’ll end up being charged. It’s grieviously stupid.
11:27 am
Now you’re blaming the victim.
The guy got beat to pulp by these music lovers.
11:42 am
Ok, would you guys bring your 13 year old next door when you went to confront a bunch of shitbag gangsters that are partying? I’m not blaming the victim, obviously, he was not planning on getting assaulted. But confronting these guys, especially with your young daughter and wife, was not a wise decision. And Tuecer, it’s not about your kid seeing it, it’s about her living it. Could have been a lot worse for her!
But yeah, these guys will get caught.
11:51 am
If they are gangsters, the preferred term is “shitbird.”
11:56 am
sounds more like they were just getting home…prolly walking back to the house from the garage and these dipshits were in their shared back yard. geez baker, settle down.
11:57 am
Baker…of course nobody would consciously bring their kid next door in this kind of situation, but if you re-read the Strib article you’ll realize that the victims were simply returning home to their duplex at the time of the assault:
The 28-year-old man returned to a duplex in south Minneapolis about 1:35 a.m. and found the group in the backyard drinking and listening to music, according to a police report. A 45-year-old woman and 13-year-old girl were with the man.
It’s not like he said, “OK, I’m going back outsides to pick a fight, which one of yous is wit me?”
11:59 am
also, not to pick nits…but why does the headline say he “told” the group to turn it down, and in the story it says he “asked” them. “telling” someone implies you’re being a confrontative asshole, “asking” is reasonable. (not that either one is an excuse.)
12:07 pm
oh ok, I did not see that–rather did not read carefully.
Max, If they were gangsters?
12:10 pm
Also, odds are it wasn’t his kid, as he’s 28 and the kid is 13.
12:15 pm
Baker: “And Tuecer, it’s not about your kid seeing it, it’s about her living it. Could have been a lot worse for her!”
By altercation, I mean what most people would expect as a bad case scenario – people arguing or using foul language. But no, I wouldn’t have brought my child over in any similar circumstance.
If the guy had thought there was any chance he’d get assaulted, he probably wouldn’t have gone over there. One against eight is no odds at all.
12:30 pm
This kind of situation is a growing problem. When you coddle “social clubs” and do not pose law and order on them with pure force this is what you will get. Until the people of Mpls. take a stand they will never be able live safely in many of the neighborhoods.
12:42 pm
wonder where this was in s minne?

“Police could not be reached for more information.“
Strange statement. I can understand “police did not return calls asking for a statement”, or “we didn’t call the police for a statement”, or even “police said they were making no statement”, but not “police could not be reached for more information.”
4:09 pm
that’s what happens when you cut so many jobs…can’t even find an intern to call police for a quote. next it will be “our overworked staff did not have the time to conduct a thorough investigation”
