We used lasers for combat training even in my day — I believe it was called the MILES system — multiple integrated laser (?) system — or something like that. Had little sensors on our helmets and web gear that indicated when we had been hit. That, and the blinding red light in the eyes and the horrible screams as the blinding beam burned deep into our flesh. They hadn’t quite worked out all the bugs yet.
The bigger ordinance had the system, too, even the tanks.
