I hate to steal Jason’s thunder, but being a humble journalist, he might not have planned a post about WCCO-TV’s plan to air the world’s first human-powered newscast. The scheme is simple: get enough people to ride a stationary bicycle connected to an electrical generator, connected to a bank of batteries and after only three days of pedaling….As one of the advocates of cleaner energy on this site, I have decided to help generate some power for this effort. Anyone else want to volunteer? Let me know.

Here’s the deal. If some other MNspeakers want to do this with me, I can reserve an hour’s time (5-6 p.m.) on Wednesday, Aug. 22 — the day before the Fair opens, officially. We can take shifts powering up the station on the stationary bike.
Who’s in? Wayne, after all that talk on the merits of biking to work? Maz, to show that even though his Navy days are long past, he can still beat any young liberal jerk in a test of physical endurance and toughness? Amber, to stick it to ALAMN Bob by smoking while pedaling?
Afterwards, an adult beverage or two?

I feel my Minnesota cred being cut in half every year I miss another state fair.

My goal for the year is to bike 2000 miles. I’m up to almost 1400. So I’m in, as I think this would be a cool way to get part of the mileage (and yes, I count stationary biking since that’s what I had to do for the first few months of the year).
Wed. the 22 works for me.

Thanks, PG! Wow, 2k miles! The WCCO-TV booth is located at 1741 Carnes Ave. in the Fairgrounds. Youll need a photo i.d. to enter the Como Avenue Gate, just let them know youre headed to the WCCO TV booth.
I’ll see you (and hopefully others) there at 5 p.m.

bob, i’ve been blogging about it. It’s a lot of time on a bike, but feels really good. It’ll be interesting to see if I can get the full 2k in before the end of October when the weather pushes me inside.

Is the only available time from 5-6 p.m.? Or how is this supposed to work? I work very (very!) close to the State Fair and would be interested in peddling a few miles.

You can also contact Kari Nolan at WCCO directly, Steve, I just thought it would be fun to organize the First MNspeak Human Powered Newscast Ridetogether Evar. I think that many of their slots on other days are filled, but call her at (612) 330-2576 or email kbnolan@wcco.com if you want to pedal on the 22nd at a time other than 5-6 p.m.
Tell her “Bob from the Lung Association” sent you.
