1776 at the Guthrie

I was going to suggest seeing this play as one way to celebrate July Fourth in the Twin Cities. While not exactly a watershed in the history of American musicals, 1776 does tell the very interesting story of the birth of the USA in an entertaining format.

Want to see Thomas Jefferson dance (although not like deRusha!) and sing? This is the show for you.

We watched the film version in my Comparative Government AP class in twelfth grade. That wasn’t an AP test I ended up feeling prepared for.

I have yet to go to the new Guthrie! In fact, I have such a loose grasp of geography near the river that I’m not all that sure where it is. I have been incredibly slow in my Minneapolis locations learning-curve, which isn’t helped by the fact that often I couldn’t find my way out of a paper bag.

I have to admit that I never made it to the old Guthrie. We have been to the new Guthrie twice (you can tour the building, visit the giftshop or dine or drink there without a ticket — in fact, they encourage people to stop in for a free lookaround).

Much easier to find than old Guthrie. Cross the 3rd/Central Ave. Bridge to downtown. On the bridge, look to your left. It’s big, it’s blue, it’s the new Guthrie.

Yeah, I know I’ve seen it, I just know I couldn’t get myself to it. I’m seriously directionally challenged. My friend Ryan has been trying to teach me north from south as related to Twin Cities landmarks for a year. I still haven’t learned anything.

I did go to several things at the old Guthrie (hello, school field trips!). I should get more theater going in my life. I think I burned out on live performances going to twenty gazillion bad improv shows when I lived in LA…but I think I’m ready to go back.

I’m going in a couple weeks when my family is in town.

Speaking of theater, has anyone heard anything about the 10 Minute Play festival this weekend? I read about it in the City Pages and it sounded interesting.

On the subject of living American political figures, anyone going to Obamarama today?

I have zero information about an Obamarama. The Strib offers no details, and the link to “Minneapolis Kickoff” at barackobama.com just dumps you into a donation form.

Still more on Obamarama here.

Barack sez: I (heart) small donations!

BTW: I’m not going. Regardless of your personal politics, you should see this guy in person work the crowd at least once.
