I read hedy devine a few times a week…fantastically voyeuristically entertaining. But it appears that she’s no longer writing for public consumption. Too bad.

whoops…never mind…I looked @ it earlier today and it had some sort of “invite only..private blog” thingy on it…did she have a change of heart, or am I really that hungover?

She’s still blogging, but for now it’s invite only.

either I was unknowingly invited (doubtful) or the privacy setting isn’t working right now.

I also regularly read/post on zimmern’s blog & on the Midwest section of Chowhounds. Love a good food debate.

Amber runs a great blog. Her and Hedy are the only good ones, the rest are shit.

I’ve also been a regular visitor @ girlfriday for ~2 years. bottle gang has potential. fimoculous is great for keeping up on quirky shit that interests rex….always interesting links, a lot of them to corners of the art, psychology and tech world that I wouldn’t normally encoutner.

I don’t know if Morris would fit the definition of “local,” but I regularly read Pharyngula. But then, I am a nerd.

I like the local blogs. Just to name a few from the many blogs I enjoy; The Deets, Afterglide, Pussy Ranch, Streets of Pizza, Abysmal Chick. Pharyngula is excellent, although not really locally focused. I liked Hedy’s blog, so I’m sorry to find out it’s no longer publicly accessible.

Kwatt: Yes, Amber’s blog is also very good.

You can’t say, “Amber’s blog is good.” without linking to it.

Mike_s: Dammit, like I didn’t have enough to read already. Some of these are excellent.

I like the local blogs.

Essentially, most of these are on Amber’s/Hedy’s/Ali’s/Jeremy’s blogrolls. And yes, I read them all with occasional comments because I think you have a responsibility to comment and let them know you’re there. If you don’t, then you’re just a old voyeuristic man.

“That’s what SHE said!”

I sometimes peruse the recent entries at UThink (The U of Mn Library’s blog service)

Here is my list:

Minneapolis Daily Photo – The man is a photographic artist!
St. Paul Daily Photo
Pharyngula – He’s in Morris it’s local enough!
Greg Laden’s Blog – Pharyngula light, but he is a U of MN-Twin Cities Professor.
This Week in Evolution – Another U professor, but they only post once a week.
Old Dirt – New Thoughts – Hamline University Professor irregularly posts.

I don’t review every book I read over at Amazon. Why can’t I just be a slack-jawed consumer?

teucer, I was only being tongue in cheek. That doesn’t mean I don’t think you’re all pervs however. ;)

Well then, I shall start posting the occasional comment. But I’ll be doing it naked.

Hedy briefly made her blog private for a few hours for personal reasons that I’ll leave to her to disclose or not. It’s back. No need to panic.

My regular local blogs include (but are not limited to)…

Abysmal Chick (she posts somewhat infrequently)
Amber-Colored Life
Banana Blograma
Bauschy
Girl Friday
Hedy de Vine
Kitty Kat Lounge (Aliecat)
Miss Employed in Minneapolis (a local call girl who rarely posts anymore unfortunately)
Pussy Ranch
Stealing Drugs from Kids (a coworker of mine)
swirlspice (Erica M)

Make sure you’re telling me what you are doing while you’re naked…gotta get my kicks somewhere!

I’ll be typing a comment, most likely.

Typing it with what?

Essentially, most of these are on Amber’s/Hedy’s/Ali’s/Jeremy’s blogrolls. And yes, I read them all with occasional comments because I think you have a responsibility to comment and let them know you’re there. If you don’t, then you’re just a old voyeuristic man.

“That’s what SHE said!”

NO. This is NOT funny and it DOESN’T make any sense. You are ruining it.

Teucer, I’d only be impressed if you could reach the Scroll Lock key.

Kevin, take a pill.

That’s what SHE said!

Still, I think that was my best post yet.

teucer, it was. No doubt.

Andrew…I just read Ciceron’s client list. Hazelden & Surdyk’s. Nice work…cradle to grave, I say.

Moderation in all things, my friend.

Would it be entirely obvious that mine are all photo sites?
In no order at all:

Haute Dish — an arts/lit journal more than a blog. I may or may not have been managing editor for a year.
Alec Soth — He helped define the Minnesota Aesthetic and contemporary narrative portraiture (along with Shen Wei and Todd Deutsch, also from the Cities)
Ingrid (not a blog, but g’damn can that woman shoot)
Flak Photo (not strictly MN, but damn do we Minnesotans get published in there a lot)
The late Industry Magazine (which really, but for the same flaws that dog any publication — including MNSpeak and Haute Dish) would have been great.
MDP Im not quite as gushy on it as others, but its where I send people who ask “So what’s Minneapolis like?”

Zimmern & Mark Cuban

Thanks, Jeremy. I guess I should post something. I’ve been a big slacker lately, both at home and at Metblog.

My “Local” blogroll has something like 90 feeds in it, but here are some of my tops:

10,000 Takes (sports)
Behind the Mortgage (local real estate)
Ed Kohler’s The Deets
Garrick Van Buren’s First Crack Podcast
The Gross Report (good urban planning analysis)
I was told there would be bacon. (if for nothing but the name)
Metroblogging (duh)
Midtopia (centrist politics, and I don’t even like political blogs)
Minneapolis-St Paul Crime Watch
MNBeer
Northeast Beat
Overheard in Minneapolis
Roadguy
Taylor (if I could only read one local blog, this would be it)

In addition to many mentioned above (including Alie and Jeremy’s blogs):

Blahblahblah-ler – successor to Big Giant Tampon Commercial
Planet Dan – hilarious!
Exiled on Main Street – successor/accompaniment to webzine of same title
I Will Dare – humorous insights on music and life
Voix de Michele – local French teacher/writer
Excerpts from a Coffee-Soaked Mind – pretty much says it all

I’m sure I’m forgetting some, as well. I also try to remember to check DeBlog every so often…

Also, Max, is this a thread to solicit entries for a new Aggregator? I hope so. (If so, please make the blog titles in smaller text, so that I can more easily get away with work slacking. kthx!)

Are you planning to list the posted blogs someplace, Max? Maybe they could be categorized somehow. I would imagine that the local blogs (like The Deets) could also be google-mapped to their respective areas.

Also, I like Kazoofus. One of the very first blogs I started reading.

Actually, I have my own aggregator, through Google Reader, that I use for posting. Just making sure there are not any blogs that I am missing.

MnSpeak also has a Google Reader, which we had on the sidebar before the site when kablooey a few weeks ago. I am sure it will reappear soon.

Don’t you think it would be worthwhile to capture this list on a page someplace? I’d use it.

an affair with urban policy

I really liked that one, but then he went and moved to NYC.

Alternatively, I’d offer twin city sidewalks.

Great thread. Here are some I keep in my Minneapolis folder in Google Reader:

Jackalope Ranch
All Four Seasons
TV Snacks
Becky Danaher

They won’t flood your reader with posts, but they make up for it with high quality posts.

flaming lips announce fall stop in minneapolis

My faves, in order of bookmarking:

Reetsyburger’s Refuge
This Old (Minneapolis) House
Flipping Rich
Pip’s Plate
Girl Friday
The Bottle Gang
Mindy Does Minneapolis
House of Procrastination
Hedy De Vine and basically all of her blogroll (until I got 86-ed by the invite deal)
Stucco House
Our House
Greengirls (strib)
Minneapoline

I’m too lazy to link these – google ‘em if you so desire.

So since I concur with a lot of others’ lists, I’ll list some that I don’t think have been mentioned yet –

Baushy
Jason’s DeBlog
Mug 92
The Viking’s Progress
Hatesexy
Scenes From a Wasted Life
S4xton’s blog

I’m also going to really enjoy digging into “self-described hater of self-important bloggers” Taylor about the fact that his blog got mentioned on here.

I can’t tell if that’s a Taylor burn or not, Amber.

I’m not really sure how to reply on this thread. Right now I have 136 feeds in my RSS reader and the majority of them are local. I read those with regularity.

I should add this to the discussion: I have a hard time with blogs that don’t allow comments or truncate the RSS feed (thereby forcing me to visit your page for every post). I’m talking about Jason DeRusha, Bauschy, Chow & Again, Minneapolis Observer and a few others. Honestly, I don’t read many of the posts on those blogs (or news site, in the case of Mpls Obs) if I’m not really thrilled in the first couple lines of text. Why load my browser to read one post when I can use my reader to view 300 other posts? The Current’s blog does this too but lately I’ve removed it from my reader because I don’t care about the My Three Songs or the liveblog (I don’t listen to The Current while I’m at a computer generally).

Otherwise most every blog that’s been mentioned in this thread is in my reader or is something that I’ve read at one point and decided to not keep in my reader. I’m a junkie, I think. There’s a few I’ve seen here that I have just added and a few I have never heard of before. Thank you.

Also, I’ve recently cleaned out my livejournal account and pretty much don’t read any of the stuff there anymore except for a few friends.

Once you go RSS, it’s hard to go back (and I know a couple people here would argue with me on that).

Once you go RSS, it’s hard to go back

Why?

(No, seriously. Pretend you’re speaking to people who don’t even know what RSS stands for, although (heh heh heh) I can’t IMAGINE such people still exist.)

Good thread, serves as a reminder that I need to update my blog roll. I will confess that I read my fellow girl bloggers more often than the guys.

That reminds me, I read s4xton’s blog as well when I see him leave coments elsewhere as I forget to add his feed to safari. Great photos.

As for RSS compliance and comments, I am too lazy to put the necessary uploads in place onto our server to make it happen (and I’m not a fan of livejournal, typepad or blogger…yet), which might be the case with others.

This has been an amazing thread. Now my Google Reader is going to be out of control- and I’ll be even more addicted to my laptop at home. Thanks a lot.

Aaron: I hate that people can’t comment on my blog, and it has me tempted to stop blogging on wcco.com. I’d start my own blog, but I worry that no one would read it. And I suppose it’s tricky to blog about work on a non-work site.

I also agree about truncating RSS feeds– although if everyone went to readers, no one would click on pages, and then no one would ever make money.

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. When a blogger has an RSS feed, whenever they update their blog an XML file is updated. If you have an RSS reader, you can look at this file and it will give you information on the last several posts. Thus, whenever someone posts something new, you can easily find out without going to the site itself. It is most convenient way to keep track and read a large number of blogs.

Go to reader.google.com and set up a free account. Then type in your favorite blogs/web sites into the “add subscription” area. It’s like having your own custom Associated Press wire.

Looks like the Minnesota business and technology blogs are under represented so far. I started collecting links to those blogs updated at least once a week:

Business Blogs
Technology Blogs
Recruiting, HR, Career Blogs

Yes, as Kyle states (twice), the Good Fight is good! I also like Utne’s daily webwatch, Eyeteeth, Cursor (not sure it’s a blog, though), Blog Like You give a Damn, and Worrell’s Design Evolution.

blags are dumb

While I run one of the weirdest blog on the interwebs, it saddens me that no one here reads it. Sigh… I feel so much like Jason…

Thanks for the mention, Erica! Lots of the local blogs I read have been mentioned already, but there are a few I didn’t see.

Tuesdays With Torii
Urban Wanderlust
Not entirely local, but they do cover local sports and a couple of them do live here: I Dislike Your Favorite Team.
Does Overheard In Minneapolis count?

On the daily I peruse the Minneapoline, Snack Attack and of course Worrell’s Design Evolution. Obviously I read MNspeak. Duh.

Sniff.

Nobody mentioned my blog.

Whimper.

I read your blog, TJ!

I read your blog too, Realtor! In fact I just bookmarked it yesterday.

(Should I disclaim that I read it because I’m going to be an agent for a black and yellow company myself? I guess probably… :-)

I only read a couple local ones right now:

orange bottles/silver cans (FKA Hookers on Stilts)…kind of a narcissist trainwreck in action, at times amusing
Birdchick - dishing out love to the birds of Minnesota and beyond

I only read my own blog. Usually, I read it on my laptop in front of a mirror so that I can see myself reading my own blog. If I’m somewhere without a mirror, I place a framed picture of myself reading my blog next to the computer.

No, just vain.

sorry tib, but i have to say i think that orange bottles blog you mentioned is obnoxiously uncool. it’s boring, is obviously a bunch of made-up crap, and seems like it’s written by a fourteen-year-old who is trying to get as much attention as possible. *yawn*

next.

I agree with Anonymous. The OrangeBottles blog is clearly a hoax, perpetrated by a well-known local writer who’s around 30 but enjoys imagining what it would be like to be living a wild young adult woman’s life with only the judgment/mentality of a 14-year-old. In a word, it’s crap.

Well, fictional blogs have become sort of an accepted part of the blogosphere. (Though not my cup of tea.) So maybe Tib happens to be into such fantasy fiction, and just chose not to let on here about the true nature of that blog. Sort of a little Tib fib, a fib of ommission.

Max, you should TOTALLY delete the sweet world of warcraft post preceeding this one…unless mnspeak is looking to pad their hits.
