Steak!

Mortons in Minneapolis.
Old Log Cabin in Forest Lake.
Hell yeah.

jax cafe in good old nordeast always provides old school steak-y goodness. Not to mention, you can also catch a trout in their beautiful backyard patio & have it for dinner too.

As this review suggests, not every visitor likes it, but Lindy’s Prime in Arden Hills is most certainly “old school.”

Hate choice? Fancy menus? Any menus? This is the steakhouse for you.

If any of you MNSpeakers find yourself in Indianapolis, try St. Elmo’s. Serving great food since 1902 — an Indy tradition.

I thought they were closed?

Not St. Elmo’s, Indianapolis. heh.

Local = Manny’s, Rossi’s

Non-Local = Chicago Chop House

I can attest that there are no Steak and Shakes in the TC area — much to our loss. Also that S & S serves steakburgers, not actual steak

… oh, and a second vote for St. Elmo’s in Indy…

and if you ever find yourself in Bloomington, IN (Indiana University) — check out Janko’s Little Zagreb…. you might even luck into a Mellencamp sighting…

Looks like Janko’s Little Zagreb came into Bloomington, Indiana about the same time I left. As a poor college student, I couldn’t afford steak then, anyway.

Those days, you could spot Mellencamp pretty regularly. He used to come to Rapps, a place I worked at, fairly regularly on Sundays (we were one of few places in town then with a Sunday liquor license). I watched the last few minutes of the “Miracle on Ice” on the TV with Mellencamp and his (then) band, The Zone. He used to play at the “Bluebird” up the street fairly often.

I second Lindy’s.

I was in Bloomington from 1999-2001, and I still get back once or twice a year … saw Mellencamp a few times (even had the same hair stylist — brush with greatness!)

The “Bluebird” is still there. Saw a few great shows there.

Other top local attractions:

– Nick’s English Hut (of course, an institution)
– Upstairs Pub

… and my fav, Video Saloon…

Jensen’s south of the river. I think they still serve frog legs as well

always rare-medium.

Special Occasions and/or on someone else’s dime:
Manny’s bone-in tenderloin or New York Strip, creamed spinach, oniony hash browns, Napa Cabernet with an Islay Single Malt nghtcap.

On my dime:
my home-made Sergio Leone Steak Dinner…
Mesquite Grilled Ribeye (purchased @ Forster’s Meats in Plymouth & lightly rubbed with coffee grounds, garlic, lowry’s & brown sugar), garlic- mushroom ritsotto & charred pencil asparagus with bottles of Red Zin. A little Ennio Morricone in the background while I’m cooking doesn’t hurt either.

“Also that S & S serves steakburgers, not actual steak “

picky picky. Next you’ll be telling me that ground turkey burgers aren’t real hamburgers, or that tofurkey isn’t real turkey.

(spitting out tofurkey sandwich) What!!!!

In bob’s honor, I forgot to add that a good steak dinner should always be followed by a smoke…cigar, cigarette, pipe whatevs. nothing like constricting the blood vessels after ingesting a healthy dose of fat & cholesterol.

I prefer the soylami to the tofurkey…

Who’s down with TVP?
Hell no, not me!

When I go for steak, I do it myself. Nothing like grilling your own steak, and I do a mighty fine job of it. Prime rib on the other hand…

Manny’s, Lindy’s, St. Paul Grille, The Capital Grille, and whoever said the Old Log Cabin in Forest Lake is crazy.

has anybody been to Erte in NE? it’s right by my house and i’m thinking i need to try it.

I ate at Erte once about 4 years ago–ordered a salad with chicken–and became violently ill afterward. I contacted them to let them know I got food poisoning from the salad so they could take precautionary measures to prevent other people from getting sick, but the person I spoke with on the phone was incredibly rude to me and refused to believe I got food poisoning from their restaurant.

I know a few people who like Erte, but I’ll never go back.

Funny, when I ate at Erte, I got violently ill when I saw the tab. (Hey, I’m cheap.) Food was cold, and even after splitting an entree, I shelled out close to $50. The potatoes were good, though.

Given the superlative, I am quite disappointed with the Best Steak House.

Brandyberry’s and Tequilaberry’s are where it’s at, yo.

Ish! I’d rather have beriberi…

I’m a big fan of the erte… especially in love with creamed spinach. Tab is much more palatable if you aren’t drinking – that seems to be the huge jack up.

As for non-local, this may be my Nebraskan talking, but I miss Mr. C’s….

sounds like i’ll take a pass on erte…thx.

Yeah, rew, I did accidentally get loaded during that dinner.

. . . especially in love with creamed spinach. Tab is much more palatable if you aren’t drinking . . . .

People are gonna read this today, and the place is gonna be PACKED tonight!

Odd how this thread started on steak and ended up with tofurkey and creamed spinach.

In otherwords, a typical MNSpeak thread.

I’m gonna have to come clean, folks: I’m no vegetarian, but something about eating a slab of meat, no matter how delicious, just isn’t what I’m into. The two places I get my steak are:

* Chipotle, for a changeup from chicken/barbacoa.
* in a backyard, at a summer BBBQ.

That’s what she said…

When you have the G’s: Manny’s. They put on a show. When you ask for medium rare the shit is cool in the center like God intended. Ask for wine recommendations, order whole bottles, save room for the whiskey bread pudding, and don’t be cheap. They have some truly scary, crispy old waiters who’ve been there for decades, but they’re the best ones.

When you have the time: a nice, thick ribeye, marinated in tamari, garlic, and black pepper, on a hot grill at home with taters and martinis.

When you have the hangover: bistec criollo breakfast (steak with peppers and onions and eggs over easy, cuban-style) at Victor’s 1959 Cafe.

Von Hanson’s seasoned steak on a grill.

Champs, that isn’t beef steak you’re eating at the burrito crackhouse ….

dahli, thanks for the suggestion of jax cafe. I haven’t been there yet and it looks really good.

Dirty little secret: you do not actually eat the trout you fish out of the stream at Jax. Even though they make a big deal out of catching your own trout and taking a souvenir photo with your fish, they take it inside and throw it in the trash. The trout you wind up eating was probably already cooking by the time you got outside to catch “your meal.”

Take it from someone who has seen this go down many, many times.

My God, but that’s sad.

I’m still mourning the loss of Howie G’s.

What happened to them anyway? The over-expansion restaurant death spiral?

I see an army (or is it school?) of angy zombie trout arising from their restaurant trash bin and terrorizing NE Minneapolis. A few terrified survivors take refuge at Psycho Suzie’s as the “flopping dead” trout wait outside, looking at the survivors hungrily through milky eyes.

Suddenly, a pack of feral LOLcats appear, devouring the zombie trout and saving the day!

Damn, I really should start taking my meds again..
