I hope you guys don’t get sick of dishing out this advice, but everyone is looking for a little bit different information than the last poster, right?
Here is my situation: I want to live somewhere that is convenient to downtown Minneapolis. I’ll be working in the Nicollette Mall area. Also, how is the parking situation downtown? Should I plan on riding a train/bus?
I would like to find a nice apartment in an affluent neighborhood. It is pretty important that there is a gym/fitness center within walking distance. I would also prefer to be able to walk to bars/shops/cafes. I lived in Hoboken, NJ for a few years and if anyone has ever been there, you know what I’m looking for.
Also, does anyone know of an Extended Stay Hotel location that is convenient to downtown that I could stay at first while I’m apartment hunting?
Thanks in advance!
-Matt

Here’s an extended stay in the Warehouse District- haven’t been inside but it looks nice:

Parking downtown sucks, unless you’re cool with shelling out for a rental in a ramp. The bus is easy to Nicollet Mall- you can check routes at metrotransit.org. There are loads of condos going up within walking distance, too.
Not sure what you mean by affluent. Do you just want nice and clean, or people in Prada with small dogs in their bags? There’s plenty of the former, but not too much of the latter.

Also, a lot of the condos in/near downtown are for rent, while people wait for the market to improve before they sell. You might like the Mill City area, near the new Guthrie.

If you want downtown convenience yet still want walkability and nearness to a gym, restaurants, etc, then I’d suggest the Old St. Anthony neighborhood, just across the river from downtown. (Not to be confused with St. Anthony Village, which is a suburb!)
You can easily walk to downtown across any one of the three bridges (Stone Arch, 3rd Avenue and Hennepin). There’s a gym on the corner of 1st and University. Arguably, Surdyk’s is the best liquor store/cheese shop in the Twin Cities. There are also numerous restaurants in the area and quite a few upscale condos.

Kenwood, Lowry Hill and Loring Park are some other options to check out as well.
