Depends on whether that kid knows if that incarceration rate is due to racially-driven inequities in the police/prosecution system, or if they were all fair busts, or . . . what?
Can’t answer ’til we know that answer, because, if the answer is some variation of “they were all righteous busts, not based on race”, then that kid really should be thinking, “what’s wrong with the prevailing cultural assumptions in my neighborhood?” In a culture that denigrates students for working hard at school, who should feel responsible for students not working hard? I’m guessing my answer won’t match yours.
