See, you're still stuck in too limited of a view. No, life doesn't proceed like "stillpicture/flip/stillpicture/flip/stillpicture/flip/stillpicture/", but as streaming vid. Analog, not digital. No bookmarks needed, either, 'cuz it's all in the FAT sector, continuously indexed. Every instant an image and a simultaneous movement to the next instant, Heisenberg be damned. We all listened to tapes in our cars for years, thinking that we either listened in THEIR chosen order or we FF'ed or RW'ed and got to where we were driving before we ever even found our damn song, and then CDs opened us to the possibility of Random Access, and if we can have Random Access to our hair bands, we can have Random Access to time, too. It's all the same principle. I mean, have you ever sat through a Geology 101 seminar? Don't tell me you can't make time longer.

That's all I'm sayin'. Oh, and that I'm back, and the Ottomans say hi.

Future Man, you need to hijack the coding, and set the post date to April 21. Unless Matt gets in here and fixes this, we'll be looking at champs' stupid comment for the next month.

And frankly, if I were running this site, I'd consider banning people who screw around with the coding of the site. It's an abuse of a pretty open environment we all have here. And not close to funny.

Yes, a filmstrip. It does not have a recorded "snapshot" of any particular location and the changes that happen at that location. That is why you can't point your train to the 1800s or any other "time". To do so would require 1) that time exist and 2) that time can be flipped through like a filmstrip. If so, how far apart are the bookmarks? Every hour? Every minute? Second? Half-second? What happens to the "time" in between the bookmarks? Does it disappear, get dropped out like the way data gets dropped when you compress a digital file? If so, then you aren't really in the original "time" are you? You are in a compressed copy of that time. If all these segments are compressed on top of each other, it would surely make "time" go faster, so eventually wouldn't you catch up to the point at which you left "time" for "the past"? What happens then?

Or do we live in a "world" where individual bits of time flash before our eyes so quickly that we cannot percieve these flashes? Are they so fast that science cannot measure or even detect them? What if we can jump in between them? What is that called? Untime?

"The universe is not a filmstrip. You cannot mark it at any given moment and someday return to that moment, because the moment does not exist."

Well, it doesn't exist now, sure, but that's why I'm not trying to return to "now." If I wanted to return to "now", I'd still be on the train.

But your analogy is telling, in that it serves to highlight the limitation on your construct that's holding you back. A filmstrip? Certainly not. But consider an 8-track tape . . .
"You cannot break it up into segments via assigned numbers sequentially dating back to the birth of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. You may use such numbers as a reference point for yourself, but the Barbary Coast does not recognize such a number."

As an apathetic agnostic (and, man, that's about as unmotivated of a philosophical stance as you can find), I thought about what you said, and maybe you're right, but I still just don't care.

And, I had all their records, and there was no guy named Jesus Christ in Nazareth. Are you thinking of Rush or Aerosmith, or one of the other hair bands?

I hate to burst your bubble Bobby, but there is no 1800s Barbary Coast. There never was. There is just the Barbary Coast. You cannot break it up into segments via assigned numbers sequentially dating back to the birth of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. You may use such numbers as a reference point for yourself, but the Barbary Coast does not recognize such a number.

How dare you force your religion on it.

We don't know when airplanes are arriving or leaving anyway because we can't keep a single form of long-distance travel on a reliable schedule in this country. Not buses, trains nor aeroplanes.
