By the way, did anyone notice this ad on WCCO?
Is it just me or is there something really wrong about that?
12:22 pm
I’m going to an all-day showing of all of Wes Anderson’s movies tomorrow at a friend’s house. Take that, snow!
12:27 pm
Anyone else heading to the Food and Wine Expo?
It’s my favorite drunken gorging event of the year!
Also I’m looking for a good Celebrity Recipe for the Oscar party I’m going to. So far the best I can come up with is the Barbara Eden Crab Stuff Mushrooms.
12:32 pm
General MNspeak Observation: commenting volume has been up dramatically in 2007 so far. This whole internet thing just might catch on!
12:34 pm
You obviously haven’t visited the recipe goldmine. Have you tried the Ed Asner’s Balsamic Roasted New Potatoes?
12:38 pm
Please call the snow storm by it’s proper name: The Great White Wall of Death 2007.
12:39 pm
I did see the Ed Asner’s Potatoes but was looking for something more finger foody. I loved that the source for the Ed Recipe was The Jewish Celebrity Cookbook.
12:41 pm
Can you please say that on the news tonight, Jason. If you do, I’ll make up some kind of mnspeak award and give it to you.
12:43 pm
STORM OF THE CENTURY, PEOPLE!
EXPECT THE RIVER KILLER TO STRIKE AGAIN!
STOCK UP ON FOOD NOW BECAUSE OMG YOU WILL BE TRAPPED INDOORS FOR DAYS WITHOUT POWER!
12:44 pm
Reminder of the sweet MNSpeak deal on the Pajama Party this Sunday at the Varsity Theater. Nothing says “stay warm” like hanging out with your fellow MNSpeakers in your PJs — whatever they may be — and noshing on Loring Pasta Bar artichoke ramekins.
12:45 pm
I’m guessing we will get less than 6″ in the twin cities.
As will the floozy wayne convinces to wait out the storm at his apartment with the promise of $9 a pound anti-pasta from Lund’s and a nice jug of wine.
(:
12:46 pm
Sometimes you gotta look to the smaller papers for interesting stories. The Mankato Free-Press did a nice job on the twists and turns the statewide smoking ban bill is taking.
12:50 pm
Simon Delivers is on top of it. Stock up on canned goods!
12:50 pm
haha, if only I had the ability to convince someone of that.
12:51 pm
ps, that was cold and untrue!
expect a foot of snow and other things!
12:55 pm
I did see the Ed Asner’s Potatoes but was looking for something more finger foody.
Hopefully, there were no illustrations. The last thing I want to see is Ed Asner’s Potatoes…
1:00 pm
I am predicting at least a 400-car pile up on the highway for monday’s commute. Everything but minnesotans’ general inability to drive will be blamed. A few days later an old lady will get an icecicle in the head from the library’s wing and the library will be closed indefinitely, saving them tons of money they don’t have.
The owners of the parking lots downtown will demand the city plows them or they won’t sell for the stadium. Coffee shops will do double business once city-dwellers overcome their fear of the snow and peek their heads outside, only to realize they could use a warm pick-me-up. Bears will roam the suburbs.
1:01 pm
It’s been done:
“It’s a psychological commonplace that the motivation of artists is to paint on the great white wall of death some kind of graffiti saying: I was here. And the patronage of art comes from a similar impulse: if you can’t get your name on canvas, leave it on the wall or doors of a gallery.”
Mark Lawson
1:08 pm
If I get assigned a snow story, Matt, I will say that.
ha ha ha ha… if I get assigned a snow story. That’s rich.
1:10 pm
Has anyone seen the disgusting video of rats running wild in a NYC KFC?
Does anyone have any interesting stories about working in a full service or fast food restaurant that had or still has filthy conditions?
1:11 pm
We live to see Jason face down the great white wall of death.
1:13 pm
The Big Question questions Michelle Bachmann’s secret plan to partition Iraq.
1:19 pm
In related news, Michelle Bachmann is out of her freakin’ mind.
1:22 pm
This sucks. I was going to go up to Duluth to skate on the lake.
1:24 pm
Which part of Iraq goes to her church?
1:25 pm
Did anyone else do a doubletake at the picture with the Bundt-cake article this morning? It just happens to be held at chest-level with at least a passing resemblence to breasts.
I blame the look on the old guy’s face for inspiring me to see something dirty in the picture. I don’t think the Bundt was the only thing “rising to any occasion” during that photo shoot.
1:32 pm
If you follow political blogs, one of my favorite local political bloggers, Jon-David Schlough is leaving MNpublius to go work for Franken. One of my favorite conversations he and I have gone back to a few times is about the impartiality you lose once you start getting paid by someone.
There’s a lot of political bloggers in Minnesota that are either being paid for by campaigns, PACs or just-so-happened-to-be in a role on their real job that relates to what they are blogging about. In fact, if you weren’t aware, there are a few local political bloggers in Minnesota that treat their blogging as their full time day job.
And not just in a political sense: What do you think about blogging impartiality and when it comes to money?
1:32 pm
…or who your boss happens to be?
1:32 pm
Was just going to add the Michelle Bachmann thing. Koo-Koo!
1:33 pm
Anyone going to the Chuck Klosterman/Tapes and Tapes thing tonight?
1:35 pm
Anyone going to the Chuck Klosterman/Tapes and Tapes thing tonight?
On the Current last night I was waiting for Klosterman to tell Mary Lucia flat out: “Shut up you don’t know what you’re talking about!”
But Klosterman was smart enough to work with Mary Lucia’s strange curveball interview process. What is it about her interviews anyway? She talks too much about herself but every now and then she’s able to pull something really unique and insightful out… or, like last night, she can get Klosterman to read the weather forecast.
1:37 pm
Leave the house? Hell no, not with the white wall of death approaching.
1:52 pm
I really like Mary Lucia’s interview style and sense of humor, but unfortunately we don’t have the same taste in music so I almost never listen to The Current during her hours. The opposite can be said for Mark Wheat; I love the music he plays but I tend to just switch off the radio when he starts talking.
1:58 pm
Even odds that CK ends up in the basement of the Turf Club come 2am…any takers?
2:00 pm
Please call the snow storm by it’s proper name: The Great White Wall of Death 2007.
Yikes! I think the National Weather Service is getting into panic mode, judging from this bit of their official warning:
“A POWERFUL STORM SYSTEM WILL EJECT ACROSS THE UPPER MIDWEST OVER THE WEEKEND…”
2:04 pm
There was some comment I was holding onto until the next open thread, but I forgot what it was.
Damn.
2:04 pm
Driving around Lake of the Isles while buzzed and listening to Mark Wheat is fun!
2:07 pm
I know people just love Lucia and she must have some huge stash of cred somewhere but between her interviewing and self-referential tangents I’m not digging it. Maybe she’s just hit the celebresphere where she doesn’t go to any gigs except as an MC or VIP guest?
Jill Riley, on the other hand, has enough quality to make up Lucia and then some.
2:10 pm
Anyone else going to see Hairball @ Povlitzki’s on 65 in Spring Lake Park? Didn’t think so.
2:12 pm
Amajuba is incredible. Seriously, one of the best things I’ve seen on a dramatic stage (which isn’t saying much, I admit).
Inland Empire: Part of me thinks it’s genius; part of me thinks I just wasted 3 hours of my life.
2:13 pm
Seriously, I love the NOAA bulletin writers. They’ve got so much repressed poetic talent and sexual frustration.
2:15 pm
Jill Riley is cool, but her voice puts me to sleep. She has that quinessential public radio voice. She belongs on a classical radio station. No offense towards her as a person or anything.
2:18 pm
Hairball looks awesome, except I can’t tell what the heck it is.
2:19 pm
Now I have to say something about Lucia! Her voice is totally hot!
2:20 pm
commenting volume has been up dramatically in 2007 so far — I happen to be far less busy at work, but that’s just me. Oh, and I didn’t hang out here before that anyway.
It just happens to be held at chest-level with at least a passing resemblence to breasts. — When I first looked at that picture it totally looked like someone was holding their hands up grabby-grabby style.
2:21 pm
From what I can gather, Hairball is a rockin 80’s hair band cover band, and they are playing @ the Twin Cities finest Polish Nascar bar.
2:22 pm
In person I’d pay Wheat $5 to say, “Can you still hear the lambs Clarisse?”…$20 if he did it on air.
2:23 pm
…the Twin Cities finest Polish Nascar bar.
I’ve been there — that’s a good description of the place. Another would be “the place where your dreams for a better life curl up and die.” One of my neighbors is a regular at Povlitzki’s.
2:24 pm
Seriously, I love the NOAA bulletin writers. They’ve got so much repressed poetic talent and sexual frustration.
…and the rampant ellipsis and punctuation use all in uppercase… it’s like they… are a cross between… e.e. cummings and Matt Drudge…
2:27 pm
In person I’d pay Wheat $5 to say, “Can you still hear the lambs Clarisse?”…$20 if he did it on air.
I’ve gotten Mary Lucia to say “meeeeeoooowwww!” on the air for me for free.
2:27 pm
it’s an unifinished work, the ellipsis are there to remind them to fill the rest in later, but the time constraints of their job rarely allow them to come back and do so.
tragic unfinished art.
2:28 pm
When a woman gives birth she uses something called the “ejection reflex” to finally – thank gawd- pop that sucker out.
Perhaps that will be what this STORM OF THE CENTURY will be like. A slow and steady build to an undeniably painful but emotionally transformative climax. Minus the blood and urine and poo.
Not that I am an expert. The only thing I am sure of is the presence of a Serial Killer that preys on young men in Minnesota and Wisconsin and drowns them in the river to feed his bizarre fascination with drowning fantasies and his own repressed sexuality.
And I have not ruled out bud jr as a prime suspect.
2:28 pm
Lucia’s my bestest Current host because she plays killer rock sets, got a quirky perspective, tells great absurd stories and she has THE most mellifluous voice and flow. Whereas some other hosts’ delivery is sort of stop & start and makes me insides tense up.
Riley has grown on me and I like her playlists but I still find her giggle annoying. And Mark Wheat, I sometimes wonder whether he’s just pulling pronounciations from his ass. Seriously–con-TRI-bution?
2:36 pm
I’d be curious to know people’s opinions on the best local news team.
For my money it’s the KARE-11 weekend team of Rick Kupchella, Amy Hockert, Sven Sundgard on weather and Eric Perkins on sports. Their banter is generally pretty irrevent and not too cloying, they all seem to understand what they’re talking about (which can’t be said about many of the big-name weeknight anchors), and they’re all easy on the eyes while not too TV-bland good-looking.
I’d love to hear the opinions of others.
2:40 pm
What Ron said.
2:41 pm

Ewwwww. Although you did just accurately describe my sex life.
I go with WCCO, because I love it when Shelby goes out into the hallway to lecture us.
2:44 pm
I don’t know about the best newspeople, but everyone on channel 5 makes me want to gouge my eyes out and rip my ears off. Except the blond sportscaster. She’s dreamy.
2:47 pm
I go with WCCO, because I love it when Shelby goes out into the hallway to lecture us
When you get to be Don’s age, you have to go out to the hallway a lot more often.
2:48 pm
Although you did just accurately describe my sex life.
TMI! TMI! Lalalalalalala!!!!
Although I saw “EJECT” and had this half-formed snow ejaculation metaphor, and then a flashback to 6th grade when one of my spelling words was “ejaculation” like they thought 6th graders wouldn’t know what that was.
2:51 pm
Mary Lucia suxxors cuz she talks WAY TOO MUCH about her BM’s and her cats.
Lolly Obeida on the Sugar Shop over on KFAI is wayyyyyyy more better…silky smooth voice and plays the best sets…and she’s on today 3-6. “Blues, Rhythm and Blues, and Sweet Sould Music.”
I don’t watch local news (Daily Show instead) but when I have to it is WCCO. KSTP is the equivalent of FOX News. FOX 9 IS FOX News. KARE is FOX News Lite and Rick Kupcella is one smarmy bastard and the Sven Guy looks like a Gay Porn Star (not that there’s anything wrong with that.)
Plus dre4mboat Jderusha is on WCCO so we gotta keep it locked there.
Yesterday I came home and Don Shelby met me in the hall… He had taken his belt off and was slapping his palm with it in a rather menacing way… and something told me I had done something very, very naughty…I never thought I would be writing to the Penthouse Forum before but…
2:52 pm
Mark Wheat is my favorite current host! I like the variety in his sets and I think he’s pretty great in general. “Thanks for listenin’!”
2:54 pm
Reading the comments on Michele B on the Strib has lead me to believe that most people that comment on forums should really get out more.
Mnspeak seems to have actual decent people post that give me hope for the future. I should really get out more.
2:54 pm
I am always available for driveway shoveling.
2:56 pm
That’s right, you went to school in detroit, didn’t you.
2:56 pm
I have a love/hate relationship with Lucia. Or actually, I don’t, because she doesn’t know me…
Anyhow, once I was driving and she did a killer set that ended with “Up the Junction” by Squeeze (yes I know I’m old), and I was crying tears of gratitude that radio could be so perfect.
Another time I turned on the radio and she was playing “Brown Eyed Girl.” I’m sorry, but on the Current, that’s just sadistic.
2:57 pm
MNSpeak is Harvard to the Star Tribune’s Central Mississippi State Community Technical School. Hell, I rolled through the comments on Erick Black’s blog and then came here to find Raindog making sense. That otta tell you something.
Ann Hutchinson…think Jillian Barbery but from Minnesota. I’m so over both of them.
I think Leah McClean is the best news team cause I’m just amazed that she’s only 27. She anchors like she’s been in the chair for 30 years. I also like Tom Hauser in the morning and Alix Kendal on Fox 9 and the guy who writes DeBlog. But times like this make me miss Janie Peterson.
2:58 pm
Michele Bachmann’s only crime is her naivete’. She shouldn’t be devulging national security information to some small-town news reporter as if he’s in on the secret but for the details.
2:58 pm
That’s right, you went to school in detroit, didn’t you.
This was at Catholic school in the ‘burbs.
2:59 pm
I never have to shovel. LET IT SNOW!
3:03 pm
I love Lolly…but grew tired of hearing about her adventures w/ daughter. I prefer the Rose Robinson and her “Blueslady’s Time Machine” show…reminds me of the female version The Famous Coachman…who taught me everything I know about the Blues Music.
3:08 pm
Plus dre4mboat Jderusha is on WCCO so we gotta keep it locked there. — I totally started watching ‘CCO during the week just for Jason. Still like my Sven and Amy on the weekends, though.
MNSpeak is Harvard to — I couldn’t get past this part without cracking up.
3:11 pm
I surmise that if you had the time and inclination and you set your FM turner to “scan” and sat in your Twin Cities abode listening to whatever came on air…over a typical 24 hour period you’d hear “Brown Eyed Girl” at least 12 times….at least. No need to play it on an allegedly indie non-populist radio station.
3:16 pm
I never have to shovel. LET IT SNOW!

Does anyone know how I can quickly set myself up with a cache of guns and grenades? If this DeathStorm is even half as bad as I’m anticipating, I think we all need to think about how we’re going to protect our families from the bands of roving street gangs that will surely attack us all in preparation for the locusts, flu, and invisible clouds of creeping death-air that will surely follow in the wake of God’sWrathfulSnowAnger.
3:23 pm
you’d hear “Brown Eyed Girl” at least 12 times
Or just go to a bar downtown.
I hate that song. Seriously.
3:23 pm
Well, that’s what I’m sayin’ …
BEG has become the most overplayed song of all time. Stairway to Heaven used to be that, but Mr. Morrison’s song has long since grabbed the crown.
And as much as we are sick of it, can you imagine how Van feels when he plays a show, knowing that he HAS to do it. Maybe that’s why he referred to it as the “c*m shot” when he played it here last spring.
Yes, he really said that.
3:25 pm
Well, you could have told me that the last time I drunkenly called you at 2 am and sang it.
Jeez.
3:26 pm
Sha la la la la la la la la la de da. La de da.
3:27 pm
This “storm” is getting hyped out of proportion. Big time.
Sure, all the news stories… this “open thread” starting with it… everyone at the office talking about it… local hotels offering discounts tonight so people don’t have to drive home (I’m not kidding)… but this was the kicker:
Dude posts photo on Flickr and plans on posting a photo from the same angle on Monday.
*sigh*
3:27 pm
Karina-
You must be one of his favourites!
-Aaron
3:27 pm
I heard it was originally “Brown Skinned Girl” but some rat fink at the label made Van change it.
Likely bud sr.
“Do you remember when…”
3:29 pm
Well, you could have told me that the last time I drunkenly called you at 2 am and sang it
I didn’t think you’d remember.
3:30 pm
Dude posts photo on Flickr and plans on posting a photo from the same angle on Monday.
Okay, and then said dude pulled it. I didn’t mean to really embarrass anyone, really.
MNSpeak is Harvard to — I couldn’t get past this part without cracking up. -erica
Exactly. I was giggling quite a bit. LOL
3:34 pm
How do you even pronounce the word “c*m”? Do you have to have a c*ckney accent?
3:34 pm
Consider the real meaning of ‘brown eye’ sometime…
Or do we have to page Alexis on this one?
3:36 pm
woah, RD’s gettin feisty
3:50 pm
I’ll be prepared to “work” from home, but I suspect we’ll get just enough snow to be really annoying but not nearly enough to actually shut anything down.
Consider the real meaning of ‘brown eye’ sometime…
I’ll never think of this song the same again.
3:51 pm
BudJr, as an undergrad I did a paper for my History of Rock class in which I explained that yes, Brown Eyed Girl by Van Morrison is indeed about butt sex.
3:52 pm
Greetings from the Future Pt. II:
I have now eaten my own children and am burning my couch for heat. I haven’t seen the sun for six days and desperation is closing in.
Why does God hate me so much? When will this snow stop? Why am I turning to MNSpeak in my closing moments?
Fading…
3:56 pm
Raindog!!!!!!!
Now you done went & pissed me off!
Compared to all the “cat up a tree” stories we get on the local stations, Kupchella is one of the few that does solid, investigative reporting.
Back off.
3:56 pm
MNSpeak is Harvard to the Star Tribune’s Central Mississippi State Community Technical School. Hell, I rolled through the comments on Erick Black’s blog and then came here to find Raindog making sense. That otta tell you something.
Kevin and Simpleton have hit on something I’ve been meaning to dedicate a post to: Are online newspaper comments/forums/chat the lowest form of Internet discusion? From my experience, the answer is “YES!” This is true not only at the Strib, but the PiPress, the St. Cloud Times, Duluth News-Tribune, and the Mankato Free-Press.
3:57 pm
Have any of you read the comments on thos Tribune ahem “blogs”? Those are the folks dragging down the curve.
3:58 pm
Just out of curiousity, zenr, what grade did your paper get?
4:00 pm
I can’t watch Ch. 11 because of how their newscasts are so touchy feely where everyone is “KAREing” and because of the weather troll (Sven). My gay next door neighbors are always yakking about him…is he really gay?? Loved a previously comment posted about him being a porn star….ya never know!
Amy is quite a looker and I’d expect her to jump to a station in a bigger market before too long.
Kupchella’s got bad hair….he must’ve took over from Paul Douglas.
When is Diana Pirece gonna go away, she is so annoying!
4:03 pm
who lives in south minneapolis?
major increase in grafitti, huh?
You’d think they’d be staying inside when it’s brutaly cold.
4:07 pm
Sven is totally gay.
4:13 pm
Aaron,
You must be one of his favourites!
That would be lovely! Well, he has never NOT played one of my requests, so that does bode well for me I suppose!
-K
4:14 pm
He’s absolutely gay. I am two degrees of separation away from his boyfriend.
4:16 pm
Breaking news: If there’s snow tonight, I’ll be standing in it at 10pm, so you don’t have to. I’m here to serve.
4:19 pm
Where should I go (downtown) for dinner tonight?
4:21 pm
I always preferred Robyne Robinson (Fox 9) over everybody else because she’s pretty hip and had a nice informal-but-informative way of doing news, but she and Passolt don’t have anywhere near the chemistry of the KARE crew.
4:22 pm
Did I mention I’m a picky eater? I don’t want to go to any of the hellholes in Block E, but that’s the kind of food I’m looking for.
But wait… DeRusha will be around, he can make dinner.
4:22 pm
Snowday…club a seal for fun.
4:28 pm
Last year right after Sven started there was a story in the Strib about how many older women had been calling the station to ask Sven out for their daughters. When they asked him about it…let’s just say he was ambiguous about his relationship status.
4:28 pm
champs, I went to cafe havana laft weekend. Was delicious, but $$$.
4:31 pm
Lolly Obeida on the Sugar Shop over on KFAI is wayyyyyyy more better
I prefer the Rose Robinson and her “Blueslady’s Time Machine” show…
Lolly and Rose are good, but Mick Novak is my favorite local radio person. She knows a lot about what she plays, but she doesn’t beat you over the head with it. And she almost always spins something by Little Marcy.
4:32 pm
those are penguins…
4:40 pm
I personally recommend the Yeti Sports suite. Use the bugmenot login “wetfakes”.
4:40 pm
You can’t tell me Sven isn’t fabulous.
4:41 pm
gay weathermen must love big snowstorms…a perfect chance to get snowballed.
4:41 pm
I forgave Sven just a little bit when I realized he was gay. That forgives some poor marks I gave him for flamboyance, but adds a few for that passé spiky hairstyle.
What I know about Ms. Robinson isn’t fit to print. Bless her heart, though.
4:42 pm
Hmm, Sven & Pat Evans……..it would be interesting to be a fly on the wall in the weather center with those two fellas!
LOL….2 degrees away of separation. Bet you got stories, eh Champs?
LOL, gay weathermen talking about being snowballed and how many inches were coming…..
4:44 pm
hellholes in Block E… that’s the kind of food I’m looking for.
I just ate at Matty B’s for the first time. Surprisingly good. Nice presentation. Friendly server.
4:54 pm
Champs,
The “Svencut” looks so bad, but I see those do’s all over in the skyway when I’m walking to work, etc… it just looks so retarded, like a bunch of Ed Grimley’s running around!
I saw Robyne a few months back around Christmastime over in the Qwest building, on the skyway level, with some tables setup where she was hawking some of her jewelry creations and other stuff….man, she looked nothing like how she appears on the air! That makeup artist working for FOX is a miracle worker!!
4:54 pm
Sven certainly likes to post shirtless pictures of himself on his blogs under the guise of “vacation photos.”
4:55 pm
KARE 11’s whole touchy-feely shtik really grinds my gears. That’s why I tend to watch KSTP if I’m in the mood for TV news. I don’t want a hug, I just want to know what the hell happened. But I did find it a tad tacky for KSTP to have a self-promo of its coverage of the house explosion out west during the 10 o’clock news on the day it happened.

Anyone going to the Chuck Klosterman/Tapes and Tapes thing tonight?
On the Current last night I was waiting for Klosterman to tell Mary Lucia flat out: “Shut up you don’t know what you’re talking about!”
But Klosterman was smart enough to work with Mary Lucia’s strange curveball interview process. What is it about her interviews anyway? She talks too much about herself but every now and then she’s able to pull something really unique and insightful out… or, like last night, she can get Klosterman to read the weather forecast.

I really like Mary Lucia’s interview style and sense of humor, but unfortunately we don’t have the same taste in music so I almost never listen to The Current during her hours. The opposite can be said for Mark Wheat; I love the music he plays but I tend to just switch off the radio when he starts talking.
wHY, YOU don’t like screaming punk music when your trying to relax on a friday ngiht?
I’m with you, Mary’s hardcore/punk fetish is out of line.

I’m reading inthe paper that the magic over at KARE is mostly gone over there, the ratings have been tanking for a couple of periods now. I liked Julie Nelson when she was at KSTP and never heard why they let her go? The guy who replaced Frank just isn’t watchable, period! I’m still amazed that Cyndy is back on the air doing news, thought she was a bigwig at her own PR firm? She missing the face time, maybe?

Since it’s an open thread I’d like to bring up that I came home on Wed. to find a squirrel in our house. Anyone had any experience with that? What’s the solution short of calling a pest control expert, live traps?

Live trap is all I’ve ever seen work.
And I’ve witnessed several squirrel invasions in my time…

I saw that channel 5 promo you’re talking about. My wife and I figured they were hyping some story they had done before, but when we found out it was for that night’s news it was really repulsive. For those of you who missed it, the 5 showed a house exploding “Hollywood” style, calling it “your news.” It was very slick and over-produced. It turns out it was in regards to a story in which a guy died, leaving behind a wife and children. Pretty repulsive way to hype a newscast.
5:51 pm
Where did all the comments go?

“The only thing I am sure of is the presence of a Serial Killer that preys on young men in Minnesota and Wisconsin and drowns them in the river to feed his bizarre fascination with drowning fantasies and his own repressed sexuality.“

If someone gets sexual satisfaction from the act of drowning young men in a river, and he/she is actively drowning young men in a river, I don’t think his/her sexuality can accurately be characterized as “repressed.”

Preparation is really a matter of personal preference, but you should know that, with the slightly gamey taste, you going to want a fairly robust and dry red wine with it.

I can’t stand Jill Riley. She’s an idiot, and she plays the worst music of any of the Current DJs.

Hey jderusha…. where do you come in on Dan Barriero’s comments regarding P.D. (Paul Douglas) this afternoon on KFAN.
He’s calling for his head if we don’t get 6+ inches of snow?
Saying he should move to Paducah, KY if he’s wrong (AGAIN!) on this one.
7:27 pm
Every time Barriero makes a prediction that comes out wrong, we should also send him to Paducah.
That said, I hope we get a lot of snow this weekend. For Paul, for Sven, for Dave Dahl. They deserve it.

ranty, is there actually GOOD hotdish? I don’t ask this facetiously.
When I worked at Land0Lakes in Arden Hills, they’d serve it in the (otherwise quite excellent) cafeteria and everyone held it up as a paragon of Hotdishy Goodness when it seemed to me to be an exemplar of all that is wrong with American food: Grey, bland and mushy.
I mean, there’s only so much wonderfulness to be asked of hamburger, mushroom soup, processed vegetables and tatertots, but surely someone does it well.

Believe it or not, I had my first bite of tater tot hotdish only a couple of years ago, and it was at the home of a friend who hails from Montana! My mother NEVER made hotdish at home when I was a kid, so I guess I didn’t have the chance to develop an affection for it. (And I didn’t like the one my friend made.)
Having said that, I do believe that it’s possible to make something in a casserole which actually tastes good. (e.g. Moussaka)
And I like my tater tots crispy and plain anyway, not damp with cream soup ooze…
2:36 pm
I’m fearful and anxious of anyone who takes Jon Stossel seriously.

5:11 pm
DId anyone catch Paul Douglas on Almanac? He was already backtracking.
Yeah that’s right! Douglas and the rest of those “weather expert” idiots on the local news circuit are basically redeeming themselves for over hyping this winter storm last Friday evening; it is now suggested, from their own computer models, that we’re going to get about six inches of that white fluffy stuff on the ground, and less likely to see over a foot of snow or greater that they manged to frighten us in the first place. Shit, talk about dishonestly!
News folks are such liars these days, it is no wonder that nobody trust them in the content of reporting real stuff out there!
5:36 pm

Henry-
I hope you don’t have a squirrel problem anymore, but when its family comes looking for revenge, I believe that if you can trap a squirrel in a room with no food supply, it will expire within a couple days. This fat kid would kill for a little bit of that metabolism…
7:48 pm
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
Poor widdle squirrelly!!!
That sounds like a horrid way to die.
7:55 pm
To all the doubters about the snow: ha ha ha ha ha! I must have 6-8 inches in Maple Grove now, and it’s still falling.
Of course, maybe we’d all prefer to listen to weather expert, Big G: we’re going to get about six inches of that white fluffy stuff on the ground, and less likely to see over a foot of snow or greater that they manged to frighten us in the first place. Shit, talk about dishonestly!
8:45 pm
I like Mary Lucia, but the fact that she never plays her brother’s music is pretty frustrating. This is Minnesota, nobody’s ever going to accuse her of nepotism for throwing us the ‘Mats every now and then.
9:33 pm
Of course now the white wall of death is doing his thing, and if Paul Douglas hadnt backtracked he would have been right.
9:34 pm
This weather caused me to miss a wedding in Sioux Falls. I’m 0-3 on family weddings in the last 12 months. It’s because I’m a bad person.
9:36 pm
Well we knew that already, K.
11:43 pm
It’s called snow tires, people. Use them. Also, normal lane rules apply. The left lane is still a passing lane, even when it’s snowing. Just because you want to do 30mph in the left lane because you have crap tires and are afraid to change lanes doesn’t mean you get to stay there.
Seriously. I saw 2 accidents today that didn’t even need to happen. One lady got a *little* squirrelly on some wet slush and decided that she needed to thrash the wheel back and forth in a hilarious show of overcorrection.
She ended up doing like 2 360s and from what I could see slammed into a power pole. It was unfortunate but actually was rather funny because it was completely her fault…. Probably was on her cell phone….
12:11 am
My favorite is people who feel the need to drive down the center of a two-lane road. Even ignoring the people behind you who might want to pass, if the people in front of you have separated themselves into two lanes, shouldn’t you do the same? Oh, wait, you’re driving an Audi, so you get to do what you want. Right.
I saw some jackass in a Geo Tracker pull out in front of traffic on Hwy 7 when he shouldn’t have and then fishtail wildly before hopping over the curb to the frontage road where he then blew a stop sign. Idiot.
12:12 am
“She ended up doing like 2 360s and from what I could see slammed into a power pole. It was unfortunate but actually was rather funny because it was completely her fault…. “

Yeah, that was mom – she was a little stressed trying to drive sis to the hospital – another convulsion, of course, and she was turning blue – and she lost it in the snow. Mom’s fine, but sis wasn’t belted in, so . . . .

5:23 am
Funny!
I’m proud to report there is as of now no bike track down the Greenway.
I will never forget my first day of work (the day ranty helped me get home) waiting for the bus at University and Rice. With a foot of snow having fallen over the last day and a half, the intersection was plugged with snow. When the red light changed, the little Mini Cooper spun its wheels…and spun…and spun…and spun. It seemed like such a good idea in July.
5:24 pm
Please call the snow storm by it’s proper name: The Great White Wall of Death 2007.
It must be bad down in redneck country as well…
5:51 pm
Real Minnesotans don’t need snow tires, or drive like assholes when the roads are bad.
It’s my belief that all these bad drivers aren’t from here. Statistically, I’m probably right. I bet less than half the people on this site are from here, right? Think of all the hmong, latino, somali, californians, and other warm-weather immigrants who are driving on our local roads these days! They didn’t exactly grow up in it, now did they?. In fact, I think people from places where they don’t have snow should be required to take their driver’s test during the winter so we know whether or not they’re going to endanger all our lives! GODDAM FOREIGNERS!!
5:53 pm
Is jderusha bragging about the snow or sending out a subtle cry for help for having to live in Maple Grove?
7:15 pm
Maybe so. I’d generalize more specifically and say that rural types are better winter drivers than urban types, especially the farm kids who start driving when they’re 10.
7:21 pm
My shoulders are sore from shoveling and snowblowing.
7:24 pm
It is a fact that Somali women are horrible drivers.
I spent 45 minutes kicking snow out from around my car, since I don’t have a shovel. Saved me a trip to the gym. The quantity of snow wasn’t so bad. Getting plowed in sure did suck, though.

A storm like this is a great reminder of why I love Minnesota Nice…my neighbor across the street has a herniated disc in his back and a super-powered snow-blower…he offered me a valium and a six pack of Summit to clear his drive with his blower…I told him if he threw in his iPod that I’d do the whole neighborhood. My son and I thoroughly enjoy WCCO’s reports about “looking for love” on the 5 o’clock news. There’s got to be something going on between Jeanette Trompeter and Dennis Douda–such chemistry between them. I know Jeanette keeps insisting they’re “just friends”, but I get the impression Dennis wishes it was much more. Last year I walked past the WCCO studio on the mall and could clearly make out a picture of Jeanette on Dennis’ desk. If they were involved–what’s wrong with that. They work together and Jeanette is “one really cool dude”. She has such natural beauty (not plastered with makeup). She brightens up a room and has so much going for her–the perennial cheerleader or Baywatch babe. WCCO struck it rich when they got her. I do like the Frank and Amelia pairing, although it appeals to a more mature audience.
